Just finished the Badminton unit in gym. BEST MOST COMPETITIVE UNIT EVER. that and volleyball. Everyone trys to look cool and say they dont like it, that its a joke sport and cant be taken seriously. I SERIOUSLY BEG TO DIFFER. super fun, I run track and wrestle, and me and my friends are getting together to play twice this memorial day weekend :)

Badminton broke my ankle 7 months ago. Had surgery. Now I'm back - just can't stay away despite docs orders. It is super fast. Physically demanding. McDonnald's culture wouldn't get it. Man that wear tights, pile up on top of each other and spank eachother's butts are not gay at all, but badminton is. LOL. BTW - I have done 5 years of Judo, 11.5 years of boxing and I am 255LB Russian. 1 Chinese person is worth 10 of you - lazy, fat, uneducated, racist rednecks. Just drink your beer and stfu.

@luqman373 Lol the only way to get points in proffessional badminton games is with a smash.. Smash is the ultimate technique for pressuring opponents and scoring points... If his smash is the only advantage, then the whole badminton game is about the smash.... Proffessionals are so quick, that a weak-ass smash will be useless..

Ofc you can try to run your opponent without a smash which is impossible, as the opponent WILL make you throw the ball up with a downward hit..

@geenius3ab Actually, smashes are only really effective if the opponent is off balance. If the opponent is expecting the smash, then he/she'll be able to return it without too much trouble. The real goal of badminton is to move your opponent around so he/she hits a weak return or is out of position, and that's when the smash is used. If smashes were the only way to gain points, professional players would smash on serve returns, and that's clearly not true, unless the serve is weak.

@timecrisis6 Indeed.. But smash is basically (Or weak hits near the net.) the only way to GET points.. Cause the pro's are just too fast to get with high hits even into the back corner....

I know that they need to off-balance the enemy first, or else even the fastest smash wouldn't help if the enemies would expect it.. Though a 200mph smash would be practically impossible to block as you can't really see it..

Smashes are important but definitely not the only way to win points. He wins with a drop shot at 0:19 (not fast enough to be a smash).

Also, the shot preceding the smash is often the real winner. eg at 1:06 its a net shot that sets him up perfectly to win the rally.

My whole discussion started with someone saying that being good at doing a smash is just a minor thing.. Which is quite wrong.. With a strong smash you can HEAVILY pressure your opponent into making either a mistake or just putting him into a position where he tires himself out...
