At the start I was hoping MJB s voice might be very soulful and bring out an interesting interpretation of the song.Don t know her work but as the song went on I was dissapointed with the 4 minute arrangement. I met her once and she's absolutely kind and humble. I talked to her about string gauge and a record she recorded at home in '04. She's been like the girl next door.

Funny how Steve's first solo is completely robbed as they chose a camera angle for Orianthi and then pan out.
Sadly, I agree with eliteman below, Mary J tried to turn this into a Jazz song in the end. She does no justice to Robert Plant (this just reminds me of Meloncamp's lyrics 'there's some Cuban band crucifying John Lennon')

ugh you people should be happy she is covering this song on american idol it exposes kids to real music unlike modern musicians. Yes, it could be better but ask yourself this, would you rather be hearing justin bieber playing live on nation television or two badass gutiar players playing a bad ass song. Grow up people.

@louiebonez fair point...but it's insulting for these supposed artists to phone it in like this....the way they performed it was phoned in and cliched - and the actual decision to do yet another version of 'Stairway' was phoned in and cliched...Orianthi's solo as usual was phoned in and cliched in her typically 'all shred all the time' fashion...this is just bad - and it's bad on a certain 'pander to the lowest common denominator' level it's not all that far removed from Justin Bieber

At the start I was hoping MJB s voice might be very soulful and bring out an interesting interpretation of the song.Don t know her work but as the song went on I was dissapointed with the 4 minute arrangement. I agree with much of what is said on yt.. I bet skunk anansie could do a blinding job, or kate bush , sinead o connor even!? I think it is a good idea to mix female vocals or musicians from other genres in to a classic rock tune. I like the idea behind this version..

If she wanted to stay close to it , she could have done it. Watch her interpretation of EvH's Beat It solo . It's just a great version of it.

@huzza18 I don't care about Beat it solo, you just don't improvise like this on a song like Stairway, this is just musically plain stupid, it has no melodic sense, it doesn't give nearly the same climax to the song, it's just there to say "hey, I'm a girl and I know fuckin' pentatonics!!11".
That's dumb. Steve Vai could've done it, 'cause he can give melodic sense to his improvisations, and he knows which notes to play on every chord, he would make it sound fucking great. SHE's only showing off.

As well it isn't a good argument to claim ,that she just shows off . You can't really show off with pentatonic scales . On top of that she doesn't have the character to show off at all. I met her once and she's absolutely kind and humble. I talked to her about string gauge and a record she recorded at home in '04. She's been like the girl next door.

@huzza18 you can't really show off with pentatonics? tell that to brett garsed, guthrie govan, eric johnson, shawn lane(rip)... you do incredible stuff on the neck no matter what notes you use, in my humble opinion of course. plus pentatonic simply means a 5 note scale, there a boat load of them and you can even make up your own. its just a lot of guitarists think the minor pentatonic is the only one out there cause everybody uses it, and there is a reason for that, they sound cool.
