when your society is a hierarchy than it is easy to see why they thought and did the things japan did. i can honestly tell you that i do not see life as a thing to throw away. i am too logical i believe we live in a huge universe and we only inhabit one world, i have only one life i would never kill myself because of mistakes. japan is very lucky that they are an island because if they shared a border they would have been killed a long time ago.
No, you are dishonoring yourself by the act of seppuku. It is dishonorable and cowardly to take the easy way out and lay down and off yourself. If someone were truly honorable, he'd get on his feet and keep fighting until the enemy is dead, or he is dead.
Yes indeed this is not how togukawa died. Its a theory, as there are two. Either he died inbattle and burned or he was badly hurt from the battle, committed seppuku and the house burned down. None have been provin right. As for the christian...This was a possibility but not likely.
Once Japan had made contact with Westerners it had led to the decline of the Tokugawa Shogunate and led to the Meiji Restoration, where they had modernized and discarded their feudal ways. So actually, the crucifix is a flaw.
And after you plunge the knife into your abdomen, you get decapitated by a skilled swordsman.
Some samurais chose to perform a more hurtful sort of seppuku called jūmonji-giri "cross-shaped cut" and when their performing that, there is no one to put an end to their suffering (cut of head).
And when your performing jūmonji-giri it's expected the samurai to bear the suffering quietly (loss of blood) and pass away with his hands over his face.
Originally in Hara-Kiri, you would not have your head cut off. The idea is that you keep your body pretty much intact - Keeping your honor. Taking the pain was the most powerful part of Hara-Kiri. The dacapitation was started in the 1800s to ease the pain - But they would leave some small amount of flesh to hold on the head in the more honorable cases.
it was a rather painful way to die (unless it was to prevent capture on a battlefield..then you just stab yourself quickly) stab yourself in the stumach..drawing from right - left, left to right then up..you would usualy have a secon (kayshaku) who would chop you head causing quick death.
there were a lot of reasons, it could be requested by their master, it was expected upon the death of their master, bar extenuating circumstances, it could be used to not only save themselved from dishonour..but to increase their family honour in the act as well as to prevent capture.
if i fight i would fight till death, not kill myself and let my cause die with it.
