Emo = Emotional.

Term came from a style of music starting in the 80s (correct me if I have decade wrong) where people wrote dark music about how they felt. About dark emotional subjects (Guilty, isolation, hopelessness). Over time they started wearing a gothic look (jet black long hair, pale, chains). And so emo became a word to describe the look. Altho it's roots are a style of music. Cutting yourself is a result of being too emotional. But it's definitely not what emo is.
