Well that lady was clearly putting on a show. But it's still technically a crime to strike someone against their will like that. The severity of the contact is irrelevant.

The severity of the contact is definately relevant. Her light cajoling slap didn't say "I mean you harm!" It said "I dislike your politics" or even just "Hey, how are you?" The old hag overreacted to get a result, which she got. The woman did nothing wrong.
What's right, and what the law says is right, are often two different things.

Whether the person is for or against the mayor doesn't change the events that took place. The mayor can't order for a person to be arrested since he has no legal authority to do so. The whole situation is screwed up.

While the lady who was hit is wrong for bringing such a ridiculous lawsuit, the whole thing could have been prevented if the other lady had never touched her in the first place. It seems a lot of people are overlooking that small detail. We all learn in preschool to keep our hands to ourselves. Looks like that lady could use a refresher course.
