Seen the movie already, it's not that much effective, but the manga is so good that it had actually made me to hate spirals. After reading the manga, spirals are giving me a disgust feeling >___<
BTW people. Look up one of Junji Ito's other mangas, "Gyo", if you loved Uzumaki.
Gyo is kinda like Uzumaki but instead of spirals...the theme is smells and scents. Very freaky! There's also an awesome bonus story at end of Gyo manga book which is a claustrophobic's worst nightmare!
I'm almost done with the manga, and I do want to see the movie, but I have to say, I think that there are a lot of scenes that look cool drawn on paper, but are hard to imagine being successfully transferred to live action.
READ THE MANGA lol. I got the manga series back when I was In high school and I still love it, but when I heard it was being made into a movie I laughed because I figured it would be really stupid and never bothered with it. Manga horror has to rely on different elements then movies and vice versa you cant cross the mediums without losing something.
I saw the movie a couple of years ago, and I finally got to read the manga recently. Geez these movie makers really screwed up, and missed out on a lot of good scares and story telling!
I really recommend you spend the time to read the manga. You can even read it online. The complaints you listed (the effects, the lack of an ending, the romantic subplot) are not problems int he manga. It has an ending to wrap things up, it is drawings so no CG to fuck up, and the romantic subplot is much more subtle and more integrated into the story.
I completely agree that this movie isntworthy of being re-watched. I am a big fan of the author ofand of the series. It deviated way too much from the manga. This is one of those series where in order to do it well you'd have to release it in installments.
I really strongly suggst reading the manga as soon as you can. It is only 3 volumes and a pretty satisfying read.
I also suggest reading Gyo. Thats some creative horror manga there.
I almost picked this one up but I picked up yokai monsters instead. (I think it's a good movie.) and after this review I think I was better off picking up yokai monsters. ^^
Never understood why Manga became so popular in japan, those roundish stupid dorky looking faces, cant stand that. Cartoons and comics should look like Dead Space, or even that Resident Evil/Outbreak cartoon. I agree with this review also, too many effects, dont like it.
everyone should read Junji Ito's manga called "The Enigma of Amigara Fault". It is much creepier than Uzumaki, and it only has 1 chapter=) The best horror manga I read to this day.
Heh. As far as Uzumaki was concerned, Id call it campy at best. Often times its silly. You really have to come up with a much more sophisticated horror movie these days to frighten our desensitized little minds. You really should read the manga's. Make sure you don't eat before or during, however. Book two is shrink wrapped for a reason. Lets just leave it at that...
You and ClothoidDoll got it right. And Book 2 contained that Mosquito chapter.....so yep. This movie was fun for about an hour though. But once it got to the stuff I care about....they just showed it through a newscast.Even the Jack in the box got dropped.
And that part really was the pinnacle of awesome in the story, as well as all the other just creepy little things in the second book that can scare the abstract shit out of us. Sadly, it was too fucked up even for Japanese cinema. That, or they just got lazy and wanted to make it more kid friendly. i don't know about you, but really, as a ten year old Id have been laughing at this movies attempts to be frightening, let alone now where I just stare in boredom whenever it happens to be playing
yay! uve finally reviewed it! i remember requesting it a year ago. ^^
i had a feeling u wudnt enjoy it fully. Uzumaki was the first japanese horror film ive seen that got me into asian horror so i gave it credit. it does has have its creepy parts. and shows things, like what-would-happen-if's, things ive wondered when i was young (like the part with the washing machine and car tire). but it had me scribbling spirals on my school papers for a week.
it was like they rushed the movie. Sure it was interesting to see, but they screwed up. The manga is 100% better...sadly I have not gotten around to reading the 3rd book. I own it, but just haven't read it Oxo
The movie was nothing like the manga. The manga scared the crap out of me and my brother but the movie left me wanting more. They should make a movie out of his other horror manga, Gyo. It might be better.
how many horror movies have you seen? my goal before my birthday is to see 100 horror movies.... ive seen alot but i didnt start writing them down until recently. sorry curiosityy=)
Hahah! I love Uzumaki! Ito Junji is a great horror manga-ka. Also, I like what you did for the beginning there. Very clever, Swan. Granted, the film could have been done a LOT better. The ending was kind of like.."..What?"
If you get a chance to do so, read the manga. The payoff is much better in the end. Good review. Looking forward to the next one!
I generaly agree with you but i can't on this one. This was a really good movie and yes some of it wasn't too good but overall it was a really good movie. I actually liked the little romance between the two main characters. lol! that guy did kinda look like a girl!
You should watch 2LDK it's a good movie alot better than i thought it would be. I look forward to your next review!
I saw this a long time ago, and yes I did think it was a little over rated and had a mediocre ending but at the time I had just started watching j-horrors and thought it was pretty good
I saw the movie last year since someone told me it was good & I agree with you (agan). I found myself bored out of my mind and disappointed with the ending. I'm actually considering giving the manga a try, but I'm pretty sure it's waaaaay better than the movie
I remember seeing this in the video store many years ago & wanting to see it... last year I was able to watch it, but it seemed a little too humorous to actually be scary. It was so silly I stopped halfway through!
Would you consider doing horror manga reviews? Ito is a genius and movies like this doesn't do him justice. There are also other authors/manga that might not be as well-known (I read Fuan no Tane a few months ago and I find it much scarier than Uzumaki)..
I feel this way about most Japanese horrors, to be honest. I have started to feel that most Japanese movies don't convey a coherent story.
Don't get me wrong. your reviews have inspired me to start watching Japanese horror movies since i've given up on western horror as mindless boring gore fests and cheap jump out scenes. Still.. I can't seem to find a story that grips me or has me rolling me eyes saying pointless' and then all over again at the ending. Especially after One Missed Call..
I agree that the movie was lame. I did have high expectations since the manga was very good. I'd actually rank this as one of the worst films I've ever seen (probably like 8th or 9th worst).
thanks for the kind words. i'm playing around with how I want to do things in the opening. If enough people like the 'shelf' opening i can start doing that. Some people still desire the original opening, and some want spoofs at the end of the videos. Some want background music, others think it is annoying, some want clips, some don't, some want pics, some don't, some want to just see me talking (i don't lol).
impossible to please everyone, but i want these videos to be as good as possible.
I think they made the movie before the manga was finished and had to make their own ending... But I'm really not sure how much money it would have cost to create the real ending...
i'm not a big fan of movies or real-life drama's based on manga's or animes. they always disapoint me and even the serious ones end up being commical because theres lots of over acting and crapy effects. i might watch this for its weirdness but i might give it a miss. can i just say i saw "Dumplings" the other day and to those of you who have seen the review and have heard of it ITS BRILLIANT!!its incrediably disturbing and not at all dispointing, but its really not for the fainthearted^^
omg the ending was so good. it was so creepy , especially when she kept saying "i want you baby" it made me shiver. and the scenes of her eating the dumplings, it was sick. ^^
Thanks to your review of the movie, I'll be getting the manga instead. Good job on the review, though. You can't like EVERYthing, right? (Nice camera work over the DVD case, by the way . . . funny)
Hey Swan, I agree with you for the most part. The movie felt very uneven, much like the Spiderwick Chronicles. It was like it couldn't decide whether it was a quirky, cartoonish horror-comedy or a serious horror movie. I wished it could have pulled it together, because it had the potential to be a really unique, great film. I'd still recommend folks see it anyway. It's not a waste of time by any means.
I agree as well. I kinda felt like something was missing at the end. Yes, great special effects. But it seems like something is missing all together too.
Oh another comment... about the presentation of your video.. you don't seem to put your usual opening, background music and even some end-jokes. You just made the video quick.
But entirely, I always appreciate your video. Nice review! Please keep it up!
I haven't watched the movie but I did read the manga version. IMO, the story of Uzumaki was quite ridiculous especially in the near end of the story. Its really creepy, I tell yah but it became weird and ridiculous at the same time. But I guess if based from your review in the movie version, I could safely say that the manga version was a lot better than the movie.
i saw this movie years ago on ebay and considered buying it, i still might but i dunno..thanks for the review..you ever going to do Guinea Pig reviews? lol, i guess there's not much to say about them really
completely agree. ive seen this movie a few years ago and i still remember how stupid some parts were. it was creepy cuz of the filters that they used and the weird spirals all over but then it became ridiculous unfortunately..
I gotta agree with you Swan, I was also disappointed with this movie. Thankfully a friend had the DVD so I didn't have to pay for it, haha.
I do have a question though. With, in my opinion, the J-Horror films being the best horror films being made today, how do you generally feel abou\t remakes/re - imaginings of Japanese horror flicks for the American audience?
besides the dark water remake, all the others i have seen have been quite frankly awful. Granted, I have not seen the american ring or grudge films, but i've heard those turned out "ok" heh.
