Wow!! Reminds me of Viktor Frankl and his 'logotherapy'. This poem sounds like something he may have like to read.
'“The one thing you can’t take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one’s freedoms is to choose ones attitude in any given circumstance.”
I absolutely love this poem. It is my favorite poem. It makes me think about all of the times that someone has tried to bring me down and how I fought back, took control, and became the master of my fate, and the captain of my soul. I am so glad we watched this video in English just for the reason to analyze the poem. It is such a great masterpiece!! I love it.
@1chrisy the author was diagnosed with an incurable disease (I can't remember what it was, leukemia I think) and had his leg amputated. You would of thought back then he would have had a terrible life but he lived very long. The poem is him basically saying no matter what life throws at you, keep going
unbelivable how this poem touches me and goes right into my mind and everytime I think someone made me weak or it is someone's fault that I am sad, these sentences are remembering me of the fact that everything about you is your fault and your responsibility. And If you are happy you are proud because you know that you are the one who made you happy!
@southafricagirl21 you should get the last two lines; "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul". That's so inspiring it gives me goosebumps
The Poet suffered immeasurable physical pain. From the age of 12 Henley suffered from tuberculosis of the bone which resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee. his work over the next eight years was interrupted by long periods in hospital because his right foot was also diseased. Henley contested the diagnosis that a second amputation was the only way to save his life by becoming a patient of the pioneering surgeon Joseph Lister. This poem is about the suffering he endured!
@JBlaze34 Actually, it makes perfect sense the other way...
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horrors of the shade...
The word "but" meaning in older modern English "only"... so beyond this path of wrath and tears looms only the horrors of the shade, that is, beyond our place of suffering the horror is just a shadow, or the shade itself nothing but drifting dread, not real.
It is about choice. How we should never submit. Whatever gods may be, whatever happens to end this world I will always believe this: "I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul."
in actuality what nelson mandela recited when he was in prison was a part of a sppech by roosevelt this part of the speech was titled: it is not the critic who counts
it was half time of my high school varsity state championship it was 35 to 0 we were getting killed i was a ffreshman and starting quarterback... i gathered my guys read this poem and told them " Its our choice we can seize victory from the disbelievers, or we can sit here and quit on ourselves," i looked at them and said " its your choice and walked out. we won 35-38

It's my favorite:X And stop commenting about that "mistake". The directors changed that word because FATE is more meaningful then CHANCE, it's the fate of South Africa that's why they probably changed the poem.

As great an actor as Morgan Freeman is, and I think he is great and I think this reading is wonderful, after finding out that he has had a long affair with his step granddaughter that started when she was 17 I really appreciate the difference between an actor and the person, Nelson Mandela, who he portrayed.
