  • If politicians were like Nelson Mandela, this would be a different world. Beautiful poem, and beautiful man.

  • "I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul" Those r my favorite words of all time.

  • Invictus poem+Morgan Freeman's voice=Jizz in pants.

  • This + Everyday from Carly Comando = Epicness

  • If i had Morgan Freeman's voice i would sit in the corner all day and talk to myself

  • It's official. The only requirement I will ever have for a soulmate is Morgan Freeman's voice.

  • My girlfriend and I teared up SO MUCH when hearing this poem in the movie! There are no words...

  • no joke

i wrote this poem on a little piece of paper and every time when i´m sad i look on it and it helps me very much

  • You know your poems epic when its said by god himself!

  • @Tehroxxorz1 Amen

  • Under the bludgeoning of CHANCE

my head is bloody, but unbowed.

  • Freeman could sell toiletpaper for $20 bucks a roll with his voice..

  • Wow!! Reminds me of Viktor Frankl and his 'logotherapy'. This poem sounds like something he may have like to read.

'“The one thing you can’t take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one’s freedoms is to choose ones attitude in any given circumstance.”

  • Not only a nation I think it inspired the whole world..

  • So i gave that bitch a poem. Bitches love poems.

  • Morgan Freeman reads it well :)

  • I absolutely love this poem. It is my favorite poem. It makes me think about all of the times that someone has tried to bring me down and how I fought back, took control, and became the master of my fate, and the captain of my soul. I am so glad we watched this video in English just for the reason to analyze the poem. It is such a great masterpiece!! I love it.

  • deftig, mooi!

  • i have to recite this.

good poem but i dont wanna memorize it.

  • I love this!!!!

  • i actually memprized the whole poem it nspired me so much :)

  • "I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul"

Inspired me so much that I got it as a tattoo to remind me that I ultimately have the choice of how to live my life <3

  • An amazing poem with a wonderful message, with 2 amazing actors (Freeman and Damon) and the music.

But please take some time and read about William Ernest Henley, the poet, and what he lived through. It will make you appreciate it that much more.

  • Perhaps it's a peculiarity of this venture, but I find hermeneusis of a poem in commentary inappropriate, spurious.

  • Morgan Freeman, narrate my life. That is all.

  • Thumbs up for goosebumps!

  • Most beautiful poem ever written.

  • @1chrisy the author was diagnosed with an incurable disease (I can't remember what it was, leukemia I think) and had his leg amputated. You would of thought back then he would have had a terrible life but he lived very long. The poem is him basically saying no matter what life throws at you, keep going

  • unbelivable how this poem touches me and goes right into my mind and everytime I think someone made me weak or it is someone's fault that I am sad, these sentences are remembering me of the fact that everything about you is your fault and your responsibility. And If you are happy you are proud because you know that you are the one who made you happy!

  • i forgot to breath for 1mins 49 secs... still shivering

  • Awesome movie, very inspiring

  • I'd rather go to hell if I ever find that god is not Morgan freeman

  • MATT DAMON.

  • I wanted the whole poem tatooed on my hip, and now I thunk I'll get 2 lines from Invictus or maybe a springbok.

  • @southafricagirl21 you should get the last two lines; "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul". That's so inspiring it gives me goosebumps

  • My sister said we should watch the film "Avatar" instead of this, thankfully I won.

  • I got INVICTUS tatted on my ribs :)

  • it would be so much easier for me to memorize this poem for my public speaking class if Morgan Freeman wasn't the narrator, smh...lol!

  • can someone help me with the meaning of this poem and the purpose

  • the poem is British, it was a Victorian poem. Great film btw (:

Matt Damon + Morgan Freeman do a brilliant job in this, both in their own ways. Makes for one of the best films I've seen.

  • The Poet suffered immeasurable physical pain. From the age of 12 Henley suffered from tuberculosis of the bone which resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee. his work over the next eight years was interrupted by long periods in hospital because his right foot was also diseased. Henley contested the diagnosis that a second amputation was the only way to save his life by becoming a patient of the pioneering surgeon Joseph Lister. This poem is about the suffering he endured!

  • 4 people have no future

  • 4 people don't have fates

  • Down with Israel.

  • GOOSEBUMPS!!!

  • It make my cry

  • I dont quite understand the phrase "Looms but the horror of the shade"... what does that mean?

  • @lcpbeto its meant to be said like this

"beyond, this place of wrath and tears looms, but the horrors of the shade"....when its read this way, its easier to comprehend

  • @JBlaze34 gracias :)

  • @JBlaze34 Actually, it makes perfect sense the other way...

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the horrors of the shade...

The word "but" meaning in older modern English "only"... so beyond this path of wrath and tears looms only the horrors of the shade, that is, beyond our place of suffering the horror is just a shadow, or the shade itself nothing but drifting dread, not real.

  • @whovianfloovian did not think of it that way. thanks !

  • unreal......

  • this poem changed my life. thx

  • @meawesomeman Same with me buddy, I carry this poem in my pocket every day

  • What's the music in the background? It's so beautiful.

  • @jkpeng the song is called 9000 days (referring to the time spent by mandela in prison)

  • This poem wouldn't be as meaningful if it wasn't for Morgan Freeman's heavenly voice <3

  • this poem helped me so many times! i love it!

  • Scene gives me goosebumps every time.

  • This poem inspired me

  • It is about choice. How we should never submit. Whatever gods may be, whatever happens to end this world I will always believe this: "I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul."

  • nelson rolihlahla mandela he is our king...our hero...what a guy! i love you nelson!

  • Anyone else notice he said bludgeoning's of fate, not chance?

Great poem, simple and easy to remember, yet so much power in those few words.

  • @Omegace that's a bit strange. at the end of the poem is the line "I am the master of my fate", so how could he be a victim of fate at the same time

  • @Dodec84 are your ears ok? when did he say he was a victim of fate? did you go to school much?

  • @moos996 ".... under the bludgeonings of fate".

Which is ".... under the bludgeonings of chance" in the real poem. Which makes more sense, by the way.

  • Comment removed

  • in actuality what nelson mandela recited when he was in prison was a part of a sppech by roosevelt this part of the speech was titled: it is not the critic who counts

  • This playing with moonlight sonata in the background= EPIC

  • 3 people are not the masters of their souls

  • @TomHD1993 They are also not the masters of their fate

  • @TomHD1993 it's "I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul."

  • @TomHD1993 It 6 people now

  • @TomHD1993 8 people now...

  • I love this poem even though it's not dark and depressing

  • @xstestonx you're a massive prick.

  • it was half time of my high school varsity state championship it was 35 to 0 we were getting killed i was a ffreshman and starting quarterback... i gathered my guys read this poem and told them " Its our choice we can seize victory from the disbelievers, or we can sit here and quit on ourselves," i looked at them and said " its your choice and walked out. we won 35-38

  • @footballstar864 sooooooooooooooo lame

  • @xstetsonx ight say thats lame nigga but im stil the one with a big ass ring on my finger what do you have you bum?

  • Beautiful and inspiring. I subbed you!

  • Also there is a mistake in the subtitles at 0:50 its supposed to be "fate" at the end of the top line, not "chance", just sayin :P

  • @NasriBoi10 the actual poem says chance, but Morgan Freeman says fate

  • Rugby is only an international sport, football is way better because everyone supports a football team but no-one supports a rugby team only their country. Rugby isnt as worldwide as football is but nice poem. :)

  • This is the best reading of this poem ever. It is truly amazing

  • Invictus I consider the best move recently made. And the poem is really motivating and inspiring. Thanks for sharing and greetings from Brazil.

  • it's just perfect....this poem was sent by God....is an inspired poem...my thanks for sharing that...and for the rugby fans...LET THIS WORLD CUP PE 1000 MORE BEAUTIFULL AND SPECTACULAR THAT FOOTBAL WORLD CUP!!!

  • @TutanCaRA shouldn't be to hard to be better than the football world cup

  • @spayne2003 indeed :D

  • @spayne2003 great argument....you're right!!!

  • fate not chance

  • @DeepSnowBand it is chance

  • so few poems touch your heart... this is one... when read by morgan freeman, it gives a whole new level of greatness

  • Bloody awesome. both the poem and the reciting.

Morgan Freeman is doing justice to this.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • reminds me of my own time in prison

  • iv been looking for this for ages

    its so inspirational

  • Morgan Freeman, you delivered this poetry in the best possible way, nothing better than his slow pausing voice for this poetry with background of Nelson tata

  • I love this poem, but I prefer the french version of this scene ! The voice is better ! =)

  • brilliant....just brilliant.....i love this poem....

  • I've got the last two lines of this Poem tattoo'd on the inside of my arm.

"I am the master of my fate

I am the captain of my soul"

  • @itslloyd123 Nice

  • good 1 suvendu :)

  • just cuz the british are the best poets and playwrites in history :D love rugby, love the story of nelson mandella, love invictus :D

  • It's my favorite:X And stop commenting about that "mistake". The directors changed that word because FATE is more meaningful then CHANCE, it's the fate of South Africa that's why they probably change the poem.

  • Like a twinkie, Like a twinkie.

  • Yay we Brits wrote a decent poem

  • Yay we Brits wrote something decent

  • my favorite poem of all time.

  • the 2 people who didnt like it are the 2 biggest asshole in the world

  • Wonderful, thank you! :)

  • Very motivational and emotional. Great poem and movie

  • "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul." Love this saying.

  • As great an actor as Morgan Freeman is, and I think he is great and I think this reading is wonderful, after finding out that he has had a long affair with his step granddaughter that started when she was 17 I really appreciate the difference between an actor and the person, Nelson Mandela, who he portrayed. Nelson Mandela, and I'm sure he has his faults as we all do, is an icon. (There are faults and there are faults.)

  • Great poem, really powerfully read too. Definitely one for the funeral.

Does anyone know the name of the underlying trumpet theme here, or is it just an original piece for the film?

  • @HansoFoundo

It's original to the piece. It's done, I think, by Clint Eastwood's son.

  • @HansoFoundo

It's an original piece for the film. I think it's done by Clint Eastwood's son.

  • @sctshep - Oh thats a shame, but it's still pretty awesome.

    Thanks anyway!

  • AMAZING

  • After seeing this movie i memorized the poem.

"I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul"

  • gosh morgen freeman reads/recites so well, unusual for a yank but he does it justice here... great poem and actually i was pleasantly suprised by the film - very good!

  • A fantastic poem. My favourite of all time.

  • Makes me teary every time

  • wow what a inspiring poem... man i gotta admit latin people are really good at poems..

  • @KingHargeisa

A British man wrote this. Not Latin

  • i am the master of my fate

i am the captain of my soul

  • just recited this at school, wonderful and powerful poem

  • I just love this movie and this is my favorite part. Nelson was an insperation to a generation and we all should be lucky that we have people like him. Thanks for putting this up.

  • Can anyone tell me the message behind this poem???

  • @AlphaStrikeSquadron shut up lol

  • @MrMongrel100 Not funny and very immature. I really want to know the authors message and meaning of the poem.

  • @AlphaStrikeSquadron in escense what it means is you are the master of your fate andno one can controll you

  • @AlphaStrikeSquadron i fucked a dog yesterday

  • @AlphaStrikeSquadron The main theme is perseverance and hope in the face of a great test or pain that life offers you. The author wrote the poem from a hospital bed after being sick for many years with tuberculosis of the bone. The name of the poem sums it up well. "Invictus" is Latin for unconquered. No matter how many adversities life has thrown at the author, his soul remains unconquered. Nothing can break his will.

  • I am not fucking being dramatic or anything, but I watch dis film, well briefly watched this film everytime I got a rugby match... INSPIRATIONAL!!!

  • i cant really hear him :(

  • obviously one faggot ass queer doesnt like this beautiful poem.

  • What is the title to this poem? This is one of the only poems that I like and it inspires me so much.

  • @WiggyPlease18 Invictus by William Ernest Henley (1849–1903).

  • i have never liked poems before but this i love it is so cool its just i fill with butterflies idk why but i love the part when it goes i am the master of my fat, i am captain of my soul

  • thank you for sharing, aloha!

  • Quando entendermos o sentido das palavras união e abnegação seremos um país melhor, mais justo e mais honesto. Meu tributo a Mandela, um ser humano como todos nós mas que compreendeu e vive por estas palavras

  • I thought Morgan Freeman delivered the role of Mandela as most fans always hoped he was destined to, but although I like Damon, I dont think he quite captured Pienaar, as a man, a player and a leader, someone you'd follow into hell if he asked. One of the great sporting captains.

  • wow

Amazing, we should listen to this every single day.....

  • 217 likes... ZERO dislikes. Good to see there are still people that have some sense in their heads :)

  • Can Morgan Freeman pls narrate my life?

  • i get to memorize this poem for 8th grade lang. this movie made it easy

  • @ThePikpikcarrot omg me too

  • In the movie the word fate is used to replace chance, and considering our modern context, i feel it gives more substance to the poem.

  • When I heard the narration of Morgan Freeman as

    Under the bludgeonings of fate

    instead of

    Under the bludgeonings of chance

The moment was ruined for me, having known this insperational poem for over 30 years.

I can't believe such a blunder could be made, even by American film makers and actors.

  • i have memorised this poem...so that one day...if i find myself sad or in a difficult moment in life...i will remember what nelson mandela had to endure for 27 years in prison and this poem...

  • One of the best poems i have ever heard, thanks for sharing.

  • "I am the master of my fate.

I am the captain of my soul".

    Words to live by...

  • "I am the master of my fate;

I am the captain of my soul."

    ~ William Ernest Henley

    Such empowering words.

  • great, thank you very much.

I have been in that cell on robin island. It was an incredibly humbling experience

I am having this poem tattooed on me soon.

    .Thanks again

  • What a beautiful movie, timeless..

  • This scene is just incredible....the delivery by Morgan Freeman, the direction, the poem....everything! It gives me goosebumps every time I see it, and every time I read the poem...wow

    Timeless words that live forever.

  • I got a popup at "I am the Master of my Soul"

    fml

  • Love this also! I will be saying this poem alot as it is very inspirational!!

  • I almost shed a manly tear when I first saw this scene. Amazing poem =)

  • i catch my self holding my breath sometimes during this video...
