when i first saw this movie i was something like 5 or 6 years old and i though platypus was saying "I am the only outragious paradoxus" instead of ornithorhynchus paradoxus.... and i remember running around singing it,
Dot and the Kangaroo is the reason I have been obsessed with everything Australia. I remember watching this as a kid and remembering how beautiful it was. In school I had to write reports on a foreign country and always picked Australia. Now in about 9 days we leave for Sydney. I still can't believe it.
I started noticing different places in the cartoon that we are actually going to... Blue Mountains & Jenolan Caves (I presume)... Now I just need to prepare myself for the flight.
qaazaaqa, I am from Australia, I only ever saw this film once, may be 20 years ago. But I have a tatered copy of the childrens book based on the film. But it was originally a book by Ethel Pedley. I think it was first published in 1899 and is the oldest Australian clasic for young children.
Platypus actually sings about prehistoric animals in the book, doesn't he? It sort of implies he was EXTREMELY old! He also stated humans killed his kind to study them.
i remebered the entire song... and i get it now!!! it was my favourite movie when i was little but i never understood certain things, it's pretty amazing... thank you <3 i really wanted to see this again!
I remember seeing this when I was little also. It really exposed me to Australia and I learned a lot about Australian animals. This film has such a good message about the environment. I am an America and I remember there was so much Australian stuff in the media back in the 1980's. I remember around this time also discovering the music of bands like Midnight Oil and I learned more about Australia from them also, I still love so much Aussie stuff today, even though I have never been there.
You know that's what makes the Dot and the Kangaroo Sequels so good for kids or people at any age. Not only are they adventurous & entertaining, but educational too.
"All animals are members of the Kingdom Animalia. This kingdom generally includes the moving things made of flesh, including birds, mammals, fish, mollusks, reptiles, insects, humans, and many other organisms. [...]"
In the mouth like some snakes no,but male platypus have poisones spurs on their hind feet. Mosty when they are in danger they kick their hind legs and jab the spur into the foe. Ouch! Even though not deadly to humans being stung by the spurs can be painful.
Hey, Donald Rumsfeld's famous known knows, known unknowns and unknown unknowns comment was clearly stolen from Mr. Platypus "I know that I don't know where you live!"
It's bizarre re-watching this as an adult, now being familiar with Spike Milligan. The voice is unmistakable.

The platypus is now known by the name Ornithorhynchus anatinus, not Ornithorhynchus paradoxus.
oshinataka 4 years ago 9
@oshinataka True, but this book was written in the late 1800's so you can understand why they call themselves that. :)
