If everybody could make it six hours or so, maybe the grid would have to be shut down. Might be a little risky, security-wise. I suppose that's the number one reason all these buildings, parking lots, etc. are lit up all night. But it could be done with downward-focused lights at a fraction of the wattage.

I can't wait to this event!! I'd love to organise a small event to celebrate the day... have been thinking about candle light dinner at the beach (lucky to live in Sydney at the moment) - cooking delicious dinner with veggies bought at a local market... maybe asking friends to chip in whatever they can or whatever they would be willing to pay for meal in a restaurant and later donate money to an environmental charity. Any suggestions / ideas??

@TheLucy318 it's not so much about the amount of CO2 produced during the hour as much as it is about all of us coming together to commit to making reducing our carbon footprint. it's a symbolic movement, which is also a criticism of earth hour, but it has the potential to push us even harder to live a greener world.

I think this movement is just a stupid ideea. The environment does not destroy itself, we are destroing it! The planet doesn't need to be saved, because the planet existed before us and will exist after us. What we really need, is to save ourselves.And this will not happen if 1h per year everybody turn the light off. If we really want to make a change, let's start with not using fossil fuel, for example! How about this??

I have been doing Earth Hour each and every year since it launched and I feel proud to be doing it. I go beyond the hour aswell.. Im always turning off lights and appliances espically in my workplace and home, I am always telling them off and remind them everyday of Earth Hour and Global Warming *PEOPLE* on our Earth can make a difference they just need to wake up and realize it. I support Earth Hour its a great cause thanks WWF for a world wide event...
