Two things that weren't mentioned:
1. Kirk was infected like Spock was!
2. HE revealed that he had the hots for Yeoman Rand!
THAT'S why he didn't save the ship & crew! Pity the writers rarely gave that responsibility to other crewmembers than Kirk & Spock! Good review otherwise.
