  • Asaro needs no one to play his music...but I love him with Leon Redbone because these 2 guys are timeless...

  • So much controversy on this song and who wrote it. I did my research on it and Jack Carey was the first to write it. I also talked to a few relatives of mine and they all still hold a grudge against ODJB and Jelly Roll Morton for "stealing" it. Jack Carey was my great great great uncle. It is of course confirmed that ODJB was the first to record this piece.

  • I love this piece! but i am having a hard tim finding the piano solo version or any version for that matter. can anyone help? it will be greatly appreciated

  • Would have liked to hear just a little more Trumpet & Guitar.

  • I'm learning about the history of Jazz in Belgium and I read that this song was played by the Original Dixy Jazz Band [Dominique J. "Nick" La Rocca (cornet/leader)] in 1919 in London to celebrate the victory in World War I. This caused the big breaktrough of Jazz in Europe.

  • Howdy!

    Thanks for your interesting comment!

  • This super talented young man blows me away!!

I am anxious to see him play in person again!! A definite treat!!

  • Which one? They are all three fantastic!

  • VERY TIGHT. The Piano Player sure has the 'Jelly Roll Morton' Sound. He'd probably be one of the few Pianists JRM wouldn't bitch at. My Complements. I always loved the "jelly roll sound => three things going on with only 2 hands".

  • Sorry for commenting twice on this particular video, Tom, but I just felt I had to complement and thank you again for all those wonderful videos you post. I'm a fan!

  • Hi and thanks for your nice comments. I am happy you like some of my collection. I'm now up to 642, and after the upcoming festivals in Missouri (early June), I'll likely be adding another 100 or more.

    Best regards,

    Tom Warner

  • Pity that the cornetist is almost drowned by the piano.Apart from that a really great trio.Aller Achtung!Did not JR Morton lay claim to many pieces of music?I heard that even claimed some by Brahms! Now that is really pushing the envelope.Wonderful music-excellently played,Thank you

  • Howdy Squarerig,

Since this was in a church with poor acoustics, and I used a consumer grade VideoCam it is easy to understand that the sound in this video is less than studio quality. My last name happens to be Warner, but I'm not related to Warner Brothers Studios in Hollywood. Soory to have delivered less tthan perfection, but I thought it was better than many of the videos on YouTube, and maybe not as good as many others.

  • Wonderful tempo, dynamics, blissful swing. No one needs a note more or another musician on the stand!

  • Yup, you are right. It is all too perfect just the way it is.

    Thanks Michael.

  • Jelly Roll was a great pianist and composer but he didn't write everything! Tiger Rag was written by Harry DaCosta, Edwin B. Edwards, D. James LaRocca - The Original Dixieland Jazz Band

  • Thanks! It seems that I remember hearing a bit of controversy about this, and that maybe Jelly Roll Morton laid some kind of claim to the tune, or maybe his own version of it. Anyway, thanks a lot for your correction on this one.

    Best regards,

    Tom Warner

  • Well, the ODJB members got the credit, let's put it this way. Morton, in his Library of Congress interviews made by Alan Lomax, explained the origin of Tiger Rag from an old Frenc quadrille. And what Paul is playing without the trumpet for the most part, is the Jelly Roll version.

  • Tamás,

I remember you from your appearance at the Scott Joplin Festival in Sedalia. I think that was in 2006? I was really impressed by your music!

Thanks for your comment. I love to keep the controversy alive, and this one will probably go on forever.

    Best regards,

  • Hell Thats All You Need For A Basic Jazz Band!

A Piano Trumpt And Gi-Tar! Thouse Guys Should Have Put A Small Honky Tonk On The Back Of A Pick-Up Truck And Went On The Road! Or Atleast The Nabiorhood.

  • it was great, but you need a drummer to be better.

  • Then the next guy says "You need a saxaphone."

Then the next guy says "You need a trombone."

Then the next guy says "You need a clarinet."

Then the next guy says "You need a violin."

Sometimes it is best just to be happy with what you have and enjoy it as is.

  • Nah not at all. Just a drummer, small group swing sounds all the better. For an exampleCheck out a guy by the name of johnpetters. He has a small group that is smokin red hot, his drumming adds so much the music.

other instruments are nice, but I feel the drummer is a solid backbone for any swingin red hot group

  • very skillful and a great listen - good to play along with

  • Thanks Tom, enjoyed it very much!!

  • Glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment.
