Your reviews are really neat and rich in content, specially on the visual part (I mean you showcase these perfectly). I really love this edition since I love some of the games in this franchise. My favorite by far is Monster World IV (It is a perfect game in many ways) but I understand you not giving it more time in this review since it doesn't resemble too much the rest of the franchise (and you really miss a LOT without the English patch). Great coverage of a iconic franchise!!
I only played Adventure Island...I never played Wonder Boy, nor heard of it back then. So I could not have known about the story behind the two games.
@SPac316 Wonderboy 1 was an arcade classic, every arcade had it (often multiple machines) and even today the really few arcades that are left have it.
Great video! I'm really into Fallout 3 on my 360, but this video seriously gives me the desire to buy a TG-16 and Sega Master System and play some of these retro games! Fallout 3 is great, but it's missing something that the older games just have.
By the way, for the lazy people. Plug a second controller on the Master System and you can actually use its buttons for Pause/Inventory in both Wonder Boy in Monster Lair and Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap. Shame they didn't this also for the Master System version of Wonder Boy in Monster World.
You also forgot to mention that Wonder Boy Monster World for the Megadrive and Genesis have different final bosses, in the US/Euro version the last boss is almost impossible to kill with that annoying saw on the floor,
Best Adv. Island game: There's no contest, The PCE Engine New ADv. Island is the best game.
Best: Wonder Boy game: Wonder Boy III Dragon's Trap for the Master System (with Fm music)
Joe, you can't criticize NES games because of their lack of color because that's the main argument of the SNES fanboys to bash the Megadrive, the only gripe I have against Adv. Island series on the NES are the tinier sprites and lack of background detail compared to the SMS WB games, the first Adv. Island on the NES suffer from sluggish controls, WB on the SMS plays more like the arcade..
Gah, did you guys actually diss Super Adventure Island 2? Love the video overall, but that is such a great game. It's very much like the Monster World games that you guys praised.
Anyway, out of all these, Monster World IV is the best in my mind, and there's a really nice translation patch out there for it, so no more "moon-speak"!
@sargesmash1 I hear you man, I play it every year, the patch is awesome! They probably didn't enjoy as much as it radically change with the translation (the story improves the game so much). It's funny because the Pyramid stage is one of the best if you play it in English. Those simple riddles were really engaging and creative. I think the best thing about MW IV is that every level has a really different gimmick to it, which works, may I say... Wonderfully? :)
Great video. I love learning so much about such varied and complex franchises. As always, the side-by-side comparisons are great to see in action. I look forward to the next episode!
Good job. The Master System game inside the SNES was funny :). There are some Brazilian versions of Monster World games where they replaced (I actually wrote "rap" first :D) Wonder Boy with some Brazilian girl called Monica.
You guys have one of the best shows on YouTube. I can eventually see you two up there amongst the big hitters in the gaming community.
I had the SMS system growing up, so clearly, I am more biased toward Wonder Boy games in general, especially Monster World and Dragon's Trap. Although, when that Sega traitor Yuzo created the music in Adventure Island for the SNES, the bar was pushed quite high. I also dig the Monster World for the Genny.
Great episode. I'd love to see you guys do a plethora of scrolling shooters. My favourite are horizontal ones, but the vertical ones are good too. I've started to get into them more and more and would love to see a run-down of some of the best scrolling shooter games on a bunch of different platforms.
I know you already did some in the Arcade vs Console video, but it'd still be nice to see more.
@TCJJ We will eventually get around to shooters, but it'll have to be an "our favorites" sort of thing as there are tons and tons of shooters. We'll definitely be splitting episodes between horizontal and vertical.
LOL THE END :D

@SPac316 It's kind of ironic how Wonder boy went to being an action rpg then Super Adventure Island II went that way.

Funny North American "Super Wonder Boy Super Monster Land" cartridge label. Grab an European cartridge if you want that right.

@chinitosoccer1 We "forgot" to mention that? It's not tremendously relevant. It took me a couple tries but I was able to beat the US version.

Great review guys I need to comment on the PC-Engine version Pronunciation. The PC engine game is not BI-Curious-Man-(joke) or Bicoury-Man etc. .
Its pronounced BIK-KU-RI- MAN or "bick-koo-ree"
Pronunciation = BIK OODEE
The lat R sounds like a rolling D.
びっくり or bikkuri ..
Definition: be surprised / be amazed / be frightened / astonishment.

@TheGreenMonkeyKing I knew the pronunciation was likely different, but I couldn't resist! Anyway, thanks for the heads up.
