  • Orion makes a series hybrid the diesel engine just makes electricity. The traction motor is direct drive its suprising how fast they take off

  • @Htown20XX In our series hydraulic hybrid system, the diesel engine generates hydraulic pressure via an engine mounted pump unit. The pump is used to charge our hydraulic accumulation system to a max of 5000psi. The stored, pressurized, hydraulic fluid is used to power 2 hydraulic motors which are attached to our gearbox and then to the rear wheels via a conventional axle/differential unit. The hydraulic motors can generate a max torque of 1704 ft-lbs, which helps get the bus moving quickly.

  • @Htown20XX Obviously, the startup torque is managed as we don’t wish to throw our riders to the back of the bus! The significant upside to series hydraulic hybrid power is that it can recover on average, 75% of the braking energy of the vehicle. The industries best diesel electric hybrids can only recover 25% of the braking energy as you just can’t charge the batteries fast enough. We can fully recharge our 40 gallon high pressure accumulators in one braking event.
