Der Freischultz is one of the finest German contributions to the planet. And the Wolf's Glen scene is the top of it. But this post AIN"T it!!! Its awful. Can't anyone of this beautfiul opera post something more top drawer? You know with Hildegard Behrens and Dietrich Diskau? Rene Kollo? etc, etc. There are gotta be better rep's of this on YT besides this turkey of a production!!!!!
Der Freischütz is not so naïv as it seems at first sight . For example , Kaspar talks about the "magbeburger Tanz" , which means he took part to a massacre during the 30 Years War . So , fantastic doesn't mean out of reality , but perhaps hidden horrible reality .
There were still a lot of wars at this time , and even folksongs tell us remembering of battles and deads.
Btw , Weber introduced folk tunes and kind of fantastic tales .
this was a very intresting production...the make-up artist should be fired that was pretty bad the women looked like clowns to me.....but everything else was awesome
ok i saw a jack rabbit holding its dick a child running around in a mask 2 rambunctious gay humping under a velvet robe or something a fat dude with long nipples and a man stabing a baby witch i liked i dont like babys
Yea I'm not exactly sure this is what Weber had in mind for the scene... isn't it supposed to be a bit naive?? Killing babies.... bunnies jacking off.....
such a disturbing scene...on the one hand it's mildly comical, but the display of vulgarity at this site where one comes to meet the black huntsman is truly frightening, if you stop to think about it, if only because of how unnatural everything is.
A beautiful scene though, in any case, 5'd and favorited!
Wild. According to Robert Greenberg in his The Teaching Company DVD lecture series, How to Listen to and Understand Great Music, the romantic era really took off with this opera.
when was that performed and who are the actors? I think it´s the best version from all wolf´s glen-scenes on youtube (and nearly the only one!) I like the big black Samiel, he´s sexy :-D
The premiere was on Oct 12, 1980 in Wüttembergische Staatstheater, Stuttgart (now Staatsoper Stuttgart). Cond. Dennis Russell Davis. Dir., sets & costumes: Achim Freyer.
Catarina Ligendza (Agathe) ; Toni Krämer (Max) ; Wolfgang Schöne (Ottokar) ; Fritz Linke (Kuno) ; Wolfgang Probst (Kaspar) ; Helmut Holzapfel (Kilian) ; Wolfram Raub (Samiel) ; Raili Viljakainen (Ännchen) ; Roland Bracht (Hermit)
It's meant to. Rabbits are renowned for copulating a lot during life, so I guess what the producer is depicting hear is a Rabbit Purgatory of never-ending sexual frustration.
Wow -- well, it's supposed to be eerie and full of evil, so I guesss that's what we get. I never saw a bunny rabit with breasts and a large phallus, however.
I ADORE this opera--but NOT this production! Weber would have fainted if he saw it!!

terrible production--its weird--but for all the wrong reasons. a travesty really. But you can't defeat Weber's divine supernatural music.

Yet another production which draws attention to novelty (and idiocy) and detracting from the drama. Pity.
Svatopluk 2 years ago
You know not everyone has a five second attention span like you and just stares at the bloody rabbit. The rabbit actually represents something.
deadman45326 2 years ago
What the hell does it represent then?
Guesswho1021 2 years ago
Fertility.
deadman45326 2 years ago
Correct. However, that still makes the whole thing even more disconcerting. Something that looks so innocent could have a darker side.

There are moments in this scene of Rabbit masturbation which are proto-Strauss a la "Salome."

The music at the beginning not as haunting as it might be.
