The Veitnam reference in aliens was that it was a high tech war against a low tech enemy but technology was lossing when logically it shouldnt have been. (referance was interview with cameron on the Aliens special edition DVD)
The pule rifle Weapons never jammed in the film at all.
The prop was based on it, but the jamming part was a homage to the M16A1 and its a known fact that Cameron drew inspiration from the Vietnam war. The Jamming part may have been edited out or scrapped (been so long since I saw the movie), but it is mentioned in the mythos.
You have to look around for information about it. There was an analysis of the film however that I remember which made many paralells to the Vietnam war such as the lack of experience in some of the commanding officers as well as some info on how the M41A1 was loaded with 10% less rounds to prevent jamming usually.
Long time ago from another webpage all about the Aliens movie. Once you think about it though, you'd have to admit that it seems to be either a very striking coincidence or an obvious nod.
