  • does anyone know what key/scale this is in??

  • BAR9! STRUNG OUT!

  • a masterpiece!! very interesting video, thank you =)

  • can i get the name of the song in the begging please.

  • When i seen Perlman was in this WITH Yo-Yo Ma... i literally got goosebumps, two of my favorite people who play "classical" music are actually in my favorite movie ><

  • Williams' best score in over 20 years for a film not directed by Steven Spielberg, and one of his 15 best overall.

  • what an effin legend...he knows it

  • Omg.......love it!

  • amo esta pelicula, y amo su musica...John WIlliams eres un genio

  • this movies music is just so great. I can't stop listening and plus the movie is great.

  • It is amazing that the music was written after the movie was recorded. Especially those dancing scenes!

  • 6:00 - 6:30 OMG GORGEOUS!!!

  • My favorite John Williams score.. and that's saying something!

  • The most beautiful music ever... Breathtaking. It makes my heart beat faster.

  • I love the book, music and movie. It has to be one of my favorite scores of all time!

  • One of Johns best composed movie! I love this film and after watching it bought the cd and this music is sooooo amaZing! John Williams and Hanz zimmer are thee best classical composers for me! :D

  • This movie is so underrated

  • AMZING ARTISTS HERE, I LUV

  • This is so funny. I am buying tickets to see Yo-yo Ma when they come out for my local orchestra pretty soon but I also have a ticket for a John Williams music performance a week after that.

  • All the biggest movies of our time, Star Wars Saga, Superman, ET, The Cowboys, The Indiana Jones series etc, Not to mention the music for the last 3 Olympics in the US were scored by this man.

And he never won an Oscar

  • @hoser193 What do you mean...he has won Oscars.

  • @hoser193 He has won Oscars... Five of them in fact, from Fiddler On The Roof, Jaws, Star Wars, ET, and Schindler's List...

  • whatever people may think of rob marshall and his abilities as a director, it cannot be denied that he certainly knows how to get the best out of his actors and creative collaborators. i mean, his three musketeers (colleen atwood, dion beebe, and john myhre) all own their combined 5 oscars and 2 emmys to rob. under rob's guidence, john wrote one of his best scores in recent years with this film. he's directed 5 actors to oscar nominated performances (4 on his first feature film alone)

  • What is even more incredible is how he composes such a beatiful main theme using only the white keys of the piano!

  • i want john williams to compose my life

  • It's bad that composer, who arent right composers, 'caus they dont write their pieces theirselves win the oscar. They just write the melody and the harmony. The Orchestra sound makes the orchestrator.he must win the oscar.Or John williams, who compose and orchetrate his pieces himself.

  • @NewEquinoxProduction Not all the time. Because it takes a long time to orchestrate... But he orchestrates a lot.

  • So impressive..

  • most amazing composer of all time. the score is just magnificent. John is a genius.

  • It is very difficult to compare music by different composers. Sometimes music doesn´t need to be complex to express complex feelings and Santaolalla does simple things very well. Sometimes a movie requires that. SImplicity. Music should help the story to be told, which is very difficult to achieve, and both scores get to the point. But that said, Williams is a true master. Maybe all-time´s best and should have won the Oscar. I also love Goldsmith.

  • he captures the film so well and with such beauty. His music speaks the story, its like they are one, they ARE one. he is so brilliant at this. I could just keep going on. I cannot truly speak what my heart feels about the music for this movie, the soundtrack, and the book. they are all SO brilliant and BEAUTIFUL. I wish I could have been a part of any part of this story and its production

  • this movie is the reason why i want to learn violin again. i love how they used mostly strings instead of a lot of drums/percussion.

  • Just... wow!

  • Just a genius...amazing

  • Gives me Goose Bumps

  • Unbelievable.

  • @iam88j: When you watched the Extras from the CD, you would know that someone said that this is NO Documentary. The Nape Make Up is far shorter in Real Life, as an example.

It is a movie. It´s not possible to make everything perfect, starting from the money. A real Geisha wig is expensive as hell. But I think the movie is great, as well as the book.

Nobody knows the real world this women live in, just the Geishas themselves. I hope you don´t feel attacked now.

  • 7:05

  • After reading the book, I felt sad because there was no more to read...and after I'd seen the movie, I had so many goosebumps all over me and I felt a strong tingling sensation through my spine as well. The book and the movie were sensational. It was truly great to finally have beautiful scenes and music to put to the book; and it was done perfectly. There could not have been a more perfect way to make this movie.

  • this was one of the most beautiful soundtracks ever made

  • john williams is a MUSICAL GENIUS :)

  • Exactly!

  • what a nice reply :)

    he's one hell of a musician! :)

    be cool ya'll! :)

  • This was an amazing book and movie. But the score and elaborate dress really made it for me. It is one of the best stories of all time. This story in particular made me want to study Ancient and Post-Modern Japanese history :) such an honored and greatly practiced culture. It makes me sad that it has greatly lessened. :(

  • What do you mean it has greatly lessened? It depends on what parts of Japan you visit. I've lived there for 10 years and I've traveled all over. There are still prefectures such as Kyoto that still have true Geisha. Osaka is one of the great cities that continues to practice such. Just because time passes, doesn't mean that some traditions have to. Geisha is still very much alive even in these days in Japan and are highly requested as well.

  • Might I ask, what is the thing that the man is bowing on the timpani at 7:26?

  • I think he's using a cello/bass bow.

  • Well of course he's using a cello/bass bow, but what is the bowl-like thing that he is actually bowing?

  • @chipper916: Percussionists always use a bass bow.

  • @chipper916 Looks like a small singing bowl/suzu gong.

  • @RogueRotting360 Awesome! Thank you!

  • Itzahk should be a radio broadcaster with a voice like that....

  • If I were to be in the same room as Itzahk and Yo-Yo Ma I probably would faint.

  • @MsRavingRae Then you are a real pussy

  • awesome book, awesome movie, awesome score.... it's great all around.

  • It's funny whenever John Williams' scores don't win the oscar, because in any given year, nobody writes scores that are even in the same BALLPARK as him. Not one single year. Especially since Goldsmith has passed. Memoirs of a Geisha especially. Gustavo Santaolalla's Brokeback Mountain won in 2005 instead of John. It's just a big laugh. Anybody with an interest in music can tell that the academy just feels awkward having John win all the time. But I think you should give it to whoever's is best.

  • I think what's particularly sad about Santaolalla's win for "Brokeback Mountain" is that Williams wanted so much to win that Oscar - I remember he appeared on numerous TV shows talking about the score. A lot of folks have said that Santalalla wrote a good score that year - which he did, the music fit the film well - but I don't think it was the most original or best score of the bunch at all.

  • totally agree

  • wilsondylanmccartney- At least Williams received a Golden Globe for his music- that's pretty honorable.

  • well said...

  • @wilsondylanmccartney yeah thats very tru. He is the greates living film composer today. Waaaay abouve the rest, and his technique is on par with any classical composer.

  • @wilsondylanmccartney and John Williams....IS THE BEST!

  • there's always something amazing and inspirational about watching genius (or geniuses) at work.

  • John Williams is the most versatile composer ever! He composes with a japanese feeling so authentic that I have to check his wardrobe for katanas... And when Itzahk Perlman, über-violinist, and Yo-Yo Ma, über-cellist, joins him... There are no words, my friends... no words... I've gotto see the movie!

  • this whole movie, score, everything gives me chills :) so beautiful

  • I have a single word to say: Genius...

  • I have never seen this before, but that was wonderful!

I'm off right now to order the OST and the DVD, thanks for the upload!

  • beautiful!

  • Such a gorgeous score.. I remember when it got the OST, that it was in my cd player in my car on loop over a week. And I drive alot! Excellent Excellent

  • I haven't seen this movie. Now I MUST watch it. If not for the music alone. The movie looks good as well.

  • someone finally recognizes the cello.

serisouly, I love it so much and it sounds so amazing here.

john williams is truely a hero.

  • who cares? all his music is great and if there are similarities from one score to another, it's alright because i have yet to hear bad material come from John Williams.

    John Williams is the man..

  • bluesmaster79. You're thinking of the Hans Zimmer's score for "The Last Samurai"

  • there should be a Memoirs Of A Geisha II

  • I love this movie and this music. Williams should have won his 6th Oscar for this movie.

  • Hear hear!! I'm pretty pissed off in recent years because John Williams should have won loads. Last year he wernt even nominated... and he did Indiana Jones for christs sake!

  • @XavifromSeville totally agreed!

  • life is convoluted

  • where was the oscar win?!?!?!?!?

    wtf gustavo SANTAOLALLA?????

  • it plays with the strings of my souls, n touches deep within. very impactful and beautiful!.

  • my goodness...it touches my soul everytime....

  • jesus... if i had the opportunity to meet yo-yo Ma....

    hes the best.

the music was so... wow. just wow. John Williams outdid himself.

  • I dare say that John Williams is the best living composer in the world. today. Scores are meant to fit the screen but JW goes well beyond that.

  • so beautiful. the score and the movie just stir you from within.

  • "UH...yeah. that sounds good."

    LOL. hilarious!

  • can i find this music in limewire

  • Williams is a living Genius and a living legend. The best with Herrmann and Korngold. But I like another living composers (and dead too) like Poledouris, Newman and Newton Howard.

Sountracks are the future of "classical music".

  • i've seen yo-yo ma with john williams live once, john williams with others about 8 times. they are amazing. i can never watch ET or starwars or indiana jones without saying the music is SO MUCH better live.

  • Itzhak Perklman + Yo-yo Ma + John Williams = Brilliant feel for music!!!

  • incredible, i know

  • I hope Williams lives forever. Noone compares to him in my IMHO.

Even with all the acclaim he gets I think he is underrated. He's too often associated with his big brassy themes but even in those same movies he does sooo much more than that. Then there's scores like this one, Schindlers List, Fiddler on the Roof. Then there's the fact that he started out at a jazz pianist and scored films in that syle. Speilberg 1st hired Williams for jazz after hearing "The Reivers". Great score :)

  • omg, these men are geniuses.

  • Goth damned, I love John Williams! And I love Itzhak Perlman! And they are together once again for the Geisha... Great...

  • "i get goosebumps every time i hear sayuries theme" .... mee too.

  • i get goosebumps every time i hear sayuries theme lol

  • Does anybody know where I can get the sheet music for the Chairman`s waltz?

  • There's no question about it. John Williams is the greatest movie composer of all time. Period. Anyone who says otherwise is a moron with no taste.

  • indeed but you can't deny that Danny Elfman is on par with him in many ways

  • *Nods* That is very true. But he is second only to Williams- that can't be denied.

  • I do believe Danny Elfman is a great composer and I love his melodies A LOT! But John Williams is superior in that he does his own orchestrations and conducting. As a composer, I wouldn't want it any other way unless time retrained that leisure. I couldn't chose between the 2 though.

  • problem is williams music sounds the same across multiple movies, and you can actually hear some of the same bars used in multiple songs in multiple soundtracks

  • All composers have their own artistic imprint, that's why they're chosen for films over others. With 132 credits to his name, many of them academy award winners, you might notice his touch in a few places.

  • you have not really heard good music if you think Elfman is a GREAT composer! like most composers, he is adequate producing background music for films. Williams is a FULL character in the films he composes for. Elfman is famous because of his association with Tim Burton who really is a mediocre director really they compliment each other. Your inexperience with fine films has left you with the pop garbage that hollywood turns out...cont'

  • I'd say Elfman has written 1 pretty good original piece, RED DRAGON. outside of that the rest are pretty forgettable, even amateurish. and MELODY? WHERE? WHICH? he has NO talent for melody what-so-ever! along with MOST of his contemporaries, he's a fairly good background music technician at best. REALLY! listen to herrmann, Rosza, morricone, goldsmith and of course Williams for real talent.

  • He is the most popular, no doubt, but I think Morricone is a better musician. Williams is very repetitive at times (just listen to Superman, Star Wars, E.T. they all sound similar).

  • Williams and Morricone are both masters. I think Morricone would spit at your feet if you ever talked Williams down in front of him.

  • You think, you don't know.

  • By all means, John Williams's work with this soundtrack makes it one of the all-time crown jewels of movie music.

  • I'd consider this score at least half of the movie's beauty. In certain scenes you can almost feel the silk brushing against the floor when the geisha dance. John is one of very few people who can feel the music through, like red wine through the water.

  • John just is the most amazing person in the whole world

  • This score definitely should have won the Oscar...

  • Yeah, you´re right

  • What, EveDeath? This is actually a pretty fresh Williams work. It's not a bombasic blockbuster score like for Indiana Jones or Star Wars, and it's not a dramatic score like Saving Private Ryan or Schindler's List. This is one of his most unique scores.

  • What?! This is incredibly unique. In fact, John has NEVER done anything with this theme.

  • UR right, but the Academy Members never listen to the score, they mark a name. The music that beat out John Williams score was a one note theme and played 14 different ways. IT amazes me how the Academy Members never get it right!!!

  • I agree with you completely. John Williams is god, Santaolalla is CRAP!!!.

  • the whole album is great, very touching and beautiful

one of the best scores i've ever heard.

  • I have always wondered how this man composes such beautiful scores. Seriously some people are just too talented!

  • man..

    he is my favorite composere.

he captured my culture perfectly : ]]

    ahhh..

  • This is definitely one of my favorite scores EVER.

  • and the main violin..the perfect match...so deep!!

  • the solitude of a girl is perfectly expressed by Yo Yo Ma....i felt identified for a moment...the sound of his chello touched my heart...

  • John Williams rocks! he totally out did himself on this score. Its fantastic

  • Greatest movie composer!

  • scary good soundtrack. Probably one of the best pieces of music produced recently.

  • WIlliam's best score so far. His other tunes are great of course but the ones in Memoirs of a Geisha are just absolutely beautiful. Made him one of my favorite composers.

  • better than any of his other works in my oppinion

  • The music gets me goosebumps everytime I hear it. Amazing! They did an amazing job!

  • Great "making of" video. It's so nice to be able to hear the composer himself talk about his creative process, how to make the music fit the film. I love making of videos, they make you appreciate the music more deeply.

  • The movie was very well done, but the music made it an even more enchanting experience. It was a great soundtrack.

It's just a shame that it didn't win an Oscar that year.

  • I think it wasnt fair that williams didnt won the Oscar, But it was fair that Santaolalla did it. So I think, they should've given two Oscars for best original score that year... =D

  • what is thr name of the song first playing?

  • sayuri's theme

  • i see him every summer in connecticut and i fall in love with him more and more every year.

  • makes the hairs in the back of my neck stand up!!!!!!

  • yoyoma and john williams. this is giving me crazy chills

  • to have John Williams, Itzak Perlman, and Yo Yo Ma working together is the greatest thing you can get for a movie!

  • The music is simply one of the most beautiful scores ever ! John Williams is a genius !!!!!

  • im not one for the (excuse me if this is wrong but i can't think of better word) 'oriental' kinda music. But the score for Memoirs of a Geisha is absolutely, breath-takingly stunning. It's so well composed. John Williams is a genius.

    ~Chan

  • gosh, i really want to sit and play in there. so sad i'm not good

  • its a great movie but the music gives it that extra feel which makes it even better. so well suited

  • This movie got screwed out of the best original score at the oscars. Brokeback mountain had only three or four actual orchestral pieces.

  • I was so fucking pissed. What a smack in the face for john williams

  • this is just absolutely beautiful.

  • I still can not understand why the Academy gave Oscar to Gustavo Santaolalla's Brokeback Mountain and not John Williams.

  • its political, brokeback won because it was politically relevent to the time. the other reason is that Williams is SO BIG that most all other composers working in film cannot even come close to his level of work. its like he became a GOD after star wars and Superman and Close encounters so now his ONLY award is his admiration by ALL other composers. the very same to Herrmann and GOLDSMITH. albeit they have lesser presence in the popular media.

  • oh the music is so beautiful in the film in fact I have the soundtrack in my mp3 its just every time I listen to it it gives me so much inspiration its like a story being told to the music I love the chairmans music the best its so wonderful man I cant stop gushing about lol its just splendid john williams did a terrific job and everyone on that staff as well

  • Never mind it said it was him! I love YoYo Ma!

  • was that cellist YoYo Ma? anywoo I love this song..we are playing this in my orchestra now..it is so beautiful! I love John Williams!

  • memoirs of a geisha is really a masterpiece. the score and the music in this music. the cello and the violin is the best in this movie. the music made this movie live.

  • Wow, I love that idea how Saiyuri is the Cello and the chairman is the violin :D

  • whats this music called?

  • I love how they play Brahms's double concerto at 5:17. How awesome. I would love to see that.

  • John Williams Genius.

  • This music is so beautiful, and ofcourse, I loved the movie, I watched it so many times and it's still intresting me! Great movie! <3

  • As i was watching this movie, i kept picturing dancing to it :)

  • i think i cry every time i watch it ...i love the score

  • same! i just cant help crying to that movie and the music. its to beautiful=)

  • I LOVE THIS !!!

  • i love the music for memoirs of a geisha so much....

  • Gave me chills! Cello!!! and that violin! I absolutely love this <3

  • Oh man,I loved the score for this movie so much. I remember squeeing when I found out John Williams was doing the score. A composing genius goshdarnit! And Mr. Yo Yo Ma is just made of awesome. ^_^

  • ineresting to see how a score gets done for a movie, too bad it was only 10 min. hehe , great movie, Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li rock in this movie, tears tears tears, sublime musicscore, Yoyo Ma xie xie ni!

  • This could be his best album. that pretty much says how good it is.

  • if you like this score, you'll love '7years in tibet' (J Williams)

  • This music is absolutely fabulous!

How did he NOT win the Oscar for this score?!!!

  • mmm... I was wondering why,too...

  • I wouldn't sweat it... the man has 5 oscars under his belt.

    Fiddler on the Roof (1971)

    Jaws (1975)

    Star Wars (1977)
