I was there but much further back. Great vantage point. As a native New Orleanian, almost cried when, a few songs later, they did "When the Levee Breaks". Thanks for this post.
Surprised you got such a good video, from a bootleg, and so close. I swear, Plant looked at me!
I think the Audio is great, and while Krause does bring some more of an american country feel to her backing - for some reason I was imagining what this song could sound like with Stevie Nicks & Plant -
the ending note was enough for me to forget that thought.
Alison makes this her own version - not a 'doomed to fail' attempt to copy Denny but a real version that I think is superb. Before the Sandy fans start defending her memory - I loved Sandy to bits BUT just imagine that this was the first time you'd ever heard this song. Could you fault it?
Alison K. seems to have been around for a long time for such a young looker. She's not yet 40 but I've been hearing her for over 25 years. Full marks to her.
This is a wonderful version. I saw Page and Plant play this on their tour after the unplguged album and Najma Akhtar sang it as well as anyone.
I wish Alsion Krauss had been on of a set of twins, one with her singing talent and one fiddler. She's so good at both - an incredible fiddler, and it's a pity she hasn't made more recordings on the instrument!
I was at the show....they totally upstaged Sheryl Crow, who admitted as much when she hit the stage...thanks for the load of this and the memory remembered
she has a voice on her but is a skinny lil runt. Is he boinking her? Praps he is a bit old for that now. The mix of voices reminds me of REM/B52s on Me in honey and chinese nappy people :-)
Not JPJ on mando - though he is a great mando player. It's Stuart Duncan - the great fiddle player for the Nashville Bluegrass Band. I believe that's Buddy Miller on guitar - nothing but the best Nashville musicians for Plant/Krauss
I agree. This live cut rivals the original version I think. Gave me the chills listening to it. Allison really does this song some beautiful justice and Robert's voice sounds more alive than I've heard it in years.
God bless Allison for agreeing to do these Zep cuts. She sounds amazing.
I bought Led Zeppelin 4 the week it came out, in it's big old lp-sized cover. I cherish Zeppelin, learned to play in large part by listening to them and copping the licks, made money in bar bands throughout the 70's from that knowledge.
This is awesome. This makes Zep 4 live again in the 21st century. Purists of any stripe just don't understand music as a cultural phenomenon.
Sweet Jeebus, that was amazing. Two of the most amazing voices in music hands down. Plant still has the chops and they complement each other very well.

Alison Krauss again making wonders with her voice in this very ridiculous song. I like Led Zeppelin but I'm the first to admit that this is an awful song. However sung by her instead of Sandy Denny improves it. Alison Krauss is a great artist and Raising Sand was a great album due to her voice not Robert Plant. I await her next Union Station album, unlike Zeppelin this band is still making records worth listening to.
You're a fucking idiot dude. If it were not for Robert Plant's production, this album would be far from good. And the Batle of Evermore is a good song with or without Alison Krauss. You don't know much about music.
the production was due to t-bone burnett not robert plant and the best songs of the album are when alison krauss takes the lead not plant. i guess it's a matter of taste though, some people like to listen to songs about heartbreak and others like songs about elves.
i think thats true but i think its because they dont use plant right. he is mostly sublimated to her voice, rather than offsetting it. this song is a good example of how they should have done their album.
bummer he decided not to tour with page, jones and bonham. frankly, i suspect it's just physically impossible for his voice to withstand that at his age. hope he continues to find musical projects that inspire him and let him cover new musical ground. and i look forward to the album by the band that would've been the new led zeppelin.
This might sound a bit hippie-earnest of me, but this kind of struck a chord for me in a timely, resonant way... just the vague sense of paradise lost in the song... "bring it back"... the U.S. currently at an extremely precarious and scary turning point, "the Ring Wraiths ride in black"... kind of conjured up in my mind's eye those elusive slaves to their own power who hold our country in a strong grip, the Oil Elite, possesors of the POWER... WHAT WILL THOSE SOON TO INFLUENCE OUR DESTINY DO?>
WOW!!!! How in the hell did I not find this sooner? Dang, Robert hasn't lost the Zep sound at all. Alison sounds terrific on this. Must have been one hell of a show...Thanks for posting this for us all to enjoy.
I do think this is awesome, so don't call me crazy ... BUT, is this one of those "you had to be there" things, cuz watching this one song (which is much better to just listen to than watch), I'm not feeling the chemistry between them, or between them and the audience. They just seem to stand there kind of aloof and belt it out, but where's the love? :-)
anybody who thinks this is not awsome is crazy!! we saw this show live and it smoked. alison & robert plant are awsome together!! sometimes preformers like to try a little something different. it keeps it fresh. and there is NOWAY EVER that bruce springsteen is anywhere close to being better than robert plant at anything! or alison for that matter!!!
Led Zeppelin were Plant's take off, but he's flown far, far, far beyond what Led Zeppelin were. There's a reason why he decided to go solo. He needed to see and do and learn a lot more than a late 60s-early 70s Brit-style rock band (even if they were LZ) would let him do. Look what happened to the Stones who never broke up. Great, great band--but basically fossilized now for 30 years.
Just saw this concert on Monday 6/23 at Greek Theater, LA... fantastic! Having seen Zep in the 70's, I knew what Plant could do, but Alison Krauss is a revelation...she stole the show!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I agree, this is total shit. Why the hell is Alison singing the devil's music. LOL. anyway, it doesn't fit, never will. I think Plant could have done a much better job if he wanted to do blue grass covers and Zep blue grass versions. WTF. But Plant likes this stuff-Bruce Springsteen kicks Plant's ass on doing folk music and always will. But Zep was great in their days.
don't know if your a Zep fan or not... Whenever I hear a former Zep member playing Zep music I'm tempted to think they're stuck in the past too, and yet they wrote some incredible lyrics of their own (they did a fair amount of remakes) and The Battle of Evermore has a sentiment that still resonates; until the balance is brought back I hope to keep hearing this song done passionately.
That is indeed Stuart Duncan. He's not only Alison's favorite fiddle player, but one of the best musicians on the planet. He usually plays with his band entitled The Nashville Bluegrass Band.
Saw them at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado last night. It was MAGICAL. Best concert I ever saw too. When they sang this song I thought I died and went to heaven.
The audience was on fire.!!! I could see in Robert and Alison's faces they too where in heaven.

You mean chosen her to do the whole album with? Then again, I love the whole album so I would probably love anything these two sang together.

these two have such chemistry it gives you chills; they compliment eachother on many different levels and, in my opinion, are not quite as unlikely of a duo as some would care to think.
and i just have to add that
oOoOohh, that man still has it
after all of these years, haha!

For someone (Plant) who hated stage monitors his whole career, he seems to have bought stock in a company that makes them. He has gone from no stage monitors to standing in the middle of a monitor farm. Perhaps spending too much time in Kiddeminster.
This is outstanding! So nice to hear a live version with a better backup singer (sorry JPJ).
Do any of you Alison Krause fans notice that the more popular she becomes, the less she plays the fiddle??? In fact, does she even play the fiddle anymore?
And you must have somehow missed the vids here of "When the levee breaks" or "Black country woman" or "Please read the letter"! or on the "raising sand" cd "sister Rosetta" or ( my personal favourite) "Nothin' "! :D
it was a brilliant concert..and when it started to drizzle..during when the levee breaks..an eerie feeling
