People always say this period is good and this period isn't but everytime a artist make a successful album, the next time around they're competing for something else as well as trying to keep it interesting for themselves.

I got lost with PoP, but there was a few gems on it. I'm pleased with everything before and after it. Thank God Rock isn't afraid to grow like other forms of music.

If you got to see ZOO TV live - you went to the greatest gig ever.. this was U2 in their prime - Remember how awesome it was hearing Edge play Satellite of Love on his acoustic guitar and listening to Bono sing falsetto (when his voice could soar) I also remember them calling the White House every night.. ha ha lolz

I dream that one day they will release every U2 pro shot film as some HD 3D movie we will see. Seriously, my imagination just flies with the possibilities of Zoo TV. They were ahead of their time. I dont think today, they'd do a Zoo TV with as much charm or that certain video meets satellites, Cyberpunk Rock attitude. It would be too CGI-ish empty. It was perfect for its time but timeless! Its insane this Zoo TV. Insane. I love it then amidst the trabants and catwalk and today.

I echo 'thisaccursedman', who hits the nail on the head. In the 90s, U2 had the balls to mock everyone and everything, including themselves. They also had the balls to revolutionise their sound, as Zoo Station demonstrates. I'd always take the holy trinity of Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Pop over their bloated, sanctimonious 80s work and their recent pop/rock compromises.

The best era of U2. To think that they were so earnest, politicised, gritty, serious, semi-religious, even, and then, without warning, they produced a self-consciously overblown, playful show of irony and ridiculousness that was still kind of dark. They can make all the middle of the road stadium rock they like - nothing will tarnish the brilliance of Achtung Baby to Pop.

@thisaccursedman Thanks for your insight. It was a fascinating time, indeed. I remember seeing them several times at Giants Stadium. The stage was worth the price of admission alone. It was an ironic chapter for U2, a marked distance from their anthems of the 1980s. I'm lucky to have witnessed their evolution from the beginning. Each record resonated with me. My only wish is that they become politically confrontational again, though not extreme. Bono seems too cozy with neo-liberal leaders.

Whilst I understand people have different tastes, I admit I still can't get my head around U2 followers who "dropped out" for the duration of the 90s.

From 80s to present, the Edge has been recognised as central to what U2 are. So how can any U2 fan not see that this was the period when he was absolutely at his most potent - his distinctive walls of electric sound creating classics like Even Better, Until the End of the World, The Fly, Mysterious Ways, Gone, Staring at the Sun, Acrobat etc, etc

I was at Wembley for the UK leg of the ZOO TV tour and have to say it was perhaps the best gig I have ever been to. Awesome from start to end.
