He achieves so much without resorting to so much of the dumb and needless fast editing that so many directors today take as being exhilaratingly cinematic. I think the influence of Mizoguchi's Ugetsu is also apparent (as in his earlier Travelling Players); not just the fluid passage of time, but in particular the scene near the end of Ugetsu with Kinuyo Tanaka's magical ghostly appearance.
