My English teacher back in 7th grade had one of these, and she wasn't sure if it still worked. She just threw it out. Shame. I probably could have found a way to fix it.
@zanyzerak was the lazer disc player origenal dvd/hd/blu ray player ? just asking vhs vcr beta max and so on were big cassets tape player ? but beta max was a thiner tape player wassent it ?
Pioneer, man I inherited my parent's old cd player that used to be theirs before I was born. [I'm 19 now] and in 2008 it finally died...and I did keep it on 24/7 literally. Random but every time I see that brand I remember that stereo. I find it irritating that my radio of a year broke when the old one pulled it's weight for seemingly forever.
Nice video. I am wondering I have come across the chance to get a Pioneer CLD-1010 for 100 dollars including shipping from ebay or a Pioneer LD-W1 for 350 including shipping, how well does the CLD-1010 compare to the Pioneer LD-W1 when it comes to sound and video quality?
When you were making this video I was working at "Technidisc" (for those who don't know what that is. We were a manufacture of Laserdisc's) I worked there from 1987-1996 when the plant closed.
I almost got a Laserdisc player back in the day but DVD was right around the corner and I had invested heavily on Hi-Fi Vcr's at the time so a Laserdisc player was out.
So recently I purchased a Mitsubishi M-V7057 LD Player (Which is a Pioneer CLD-D704 re-brand) and it looks like it just came out of the box..
I really wanted a pioneer but since the V7057 is an exact copy of Pioneer's top of the line CLD-D704 I got it for a good price.
WOW a 1991 Pioneer Laserdisc review with a guy who now 38 years old is. I got the same Pioneer CLD-1080 with a buch of Criterion Collection Laserdisc on my self in 1991. It's a bummer that my Criterion Blade Runner has laser rot . Now i got since 1996 a Pioneer HLD-X0 with a complete Criterion Collection Laserdiscs. My best Criterion Laserdisc is always the Ultimate 5 disc Edition Box set Brazil and of course the DVD box set which is the same version. Laserdisc, CD, DVD and Blu ray are the best.
at school one of my teachers had a Laserdisc player in his classroom and when we did our film studies unit most of the movies we watched were on Laserdisc.
I love LaserDiscs! I got my first payer earlier this month for my Birthday and now have 16 discs. Totally awesome and I prefer them over DVD's. More natural and smoother piture and better audio. LD FTW!
That looks nice a nice piece of techno kit you had there. I'm guessing that this must be your Retro catchphrase. 'This is the date and this is the time'. If I ever send you something through the post and if that includes an audio casette, I think I'll mention the date and time. :D
I walked into a 2nd Hand Store a few days ago and I found a Sony LD Player, one of the high end units for 10 bucks, I almost bought it but the employee at the store showed me that it was a PAL Unit.
Not as rich as it would seem. I was just willing to make temporary sacrifices for long-term enjoyment. And also tried to budget for the things I wanted.
@sleazypig 1997, actually. And no, not a waste at all. Laserdisc had vastly superior picture and sound quality compared to early DVDs, and I didn't even bother with DVD until 2002 anyway. Early DVD was crap in comparison, a major DOWNgrade from LD. So 11 years with LD? A completely worthwhile investment that provided over a decade of high quality viewing and collecting enjoyment. No regrets whatsoever.
@sleazypig Are you crazy? Back in the day LD was the SHIT. I remember the first one I ever saw was Jurassic Park at my brothers friends house. If I had the money back then I would have totally gotten a LD player. I might STILL buy one just because I love retro tech.
@sgtpepper1138 Niiice! I had the CAV boxset edition of JP, it was a fave show-off disc along with T2 for a VERY long time. :) That must have been a mind-blowing first LD experience, that one was really top-notch! Great choice on the part of your friend!
I guess I should have warned you about the "Barry Manilow Self-Destruct" chip that was standard equipment on all LD/CD Combo players. :D
But seriously folks *waits for studio audience to regain their composure* bad luck. Mine still works...mostly. It gets a bit tetchy with certain CAV discs, but will play CLV no prob. My previous one imploded at the disc change point of a disc I was watching with a friend. Then I went out of town. And the player got stolen. HA! Stole my broken player!
More of a case that I accidently plugged the inverter box for my US spec Laserdisc in backwards so the player got a full 230volts of her majestys best electricity rather then the insipid 115volts over the pond.
I do have a VERY old UK spec Sony Lasermax Laserdisc but it can't handle digital tracks.
Think I might get a Pioneer just need to wait for a good model at a reasonable price to come up on eBay.
I really just don't why you said tape. I read your responses but I think you meant to send them to someone else. hahahah I'm just fucking with you. someone else sent a comment similar to the one I'm repeating and I just thought I would see how much you could take. Love the retro vids :)
i have a video disc player from the 80s my next door neighbour gave it me with about 50 or so movies for helping him move house ,and it still works , the quality of film is better than vhs in my oppinion but not as good as dvd just wondering are you aware of this format and what are your thoughts about it , rearly enjoy your vids you clearly your stuff, thanks man
Younger viewers won't appreciate how awesome this particular piece of hardware really was back in the day. It was a big deal not to have to rewind or fast forward or anything like that. Seeing this now, I wish we had one when I was a kid cause that would have been awesome.
.....blu rays are not rental only here. we did rental only DVDs here just after they picke dup in popularity..Fox did that first , universal tried "rental version" of movies.. LDs didn't take off here.. Australia
back when vhs was big here, movies were not avaialble in retail stores untill the time period was lapsed 6-12 months then the movies were rereleased in retail packaging(scaled down plastic case not too dissimilar to the rental version). we have rental windows ..did, not so.. much these days.. only less known movies go to rental on dvd here even those are available too at stores,
I don't have that particular player any more, it was actually stolen a couple of years later. I do still have my second player, however. So I might do an updated video about that one at some point, I don't think I did a demonstration of the second player back when I got it.
I was referring to the fact that what Jason was seeing and hearing was a VHS recording OF the Laserdisc video and audio. So even though it was a hi-fi stereo VHS tape recorded in SP for optimal picture and audio quality, and I recorded some clips via a direct video.audio feed from the Laserdisc player, he still wouldn't be seeing and hearing the full quality of Laserdisc due to the limitations of VHS.
The school I went to last year had a Laserdisc player. Thankfully it was still functioning and we got to watch something on it! Apparently I was the only person in any of that teacher's classes that had heard of Laserdiscs.
How sad. I wanted to see a Laserdisc video example. Will you put some one day?
Is Youtube not allowing you to upload the video because of the "Blade runner" part or you just removed it by vigilance?
I don't think you'll have troubles with Youtube just because you show 2 or 3 minutes from Blade Runner recorded 18 years ago. Lol Look at the whole website. It's full of illegal movies and albums and it's way worse than that. BTW, you can remove the video anytime if anything goes wrong.
Yeah, but while MOST studios are cool with short clips and whatnot being used for review purposes, it is widely known that Warner can be quite anal about it and has blanked the audio or had videos removed that feature ANYTHING of theirs. So I decided not to chance it with this one, and just pulled the clip.
If it's any consolation, it looked and sounded great. :) Criterion made some of the best LDs out there, and that Blade Runner disc was no exception!
That's really cool. I like retro stuff like that, largely because I wasn't around to experience most of it. My parents were into laserdisc and we still have a lot of them. I swear I have that exact disc of 'Blade Runner.'
People who think the $150 BluRay is so expensive need to see this video. $700. Wow!
That was "The Best of the Art of Noise," specifically the "Blue Cover" version that had all the extended mixes of their most popular songs at the time. Great album, and apparently quite a collector's item these days. Wish I still had it.. :(
Cool Laserdisc player, I've never owned one myself, is it true that nearly all laserdiscs get laser rot, or is it just the late 70's /early 80's L'discs?????
No, actually very few Laserdiscs suffered from Laser rot. Laser rot was caused by improper manufacturing, where the glue used to join the plastic and metal layers was cheap, or some dirt gets between the layers, etc. Most studios had proper quality control and "clean room" environments so this wasn't a problem, but a few studios were less careful. Out of the 300 or so Laserdiscs I owned over the years, I only really had rot issue with a handful of them,
Well, I'd like to SAY I was rich beyond belief, but the truth is I decided to cut back on FOOD that week in favor of the years of enjoyment I knew the player would give us. :D It was a sacrifice well worth making.
There was only ONE Zaranyzerak Goes Nuts moment? I must have mis-counted...
it's funny, I too have gone through 2 players. The first broke, then I went out of town and my place was broken into. So it broke, then it was stolen. I got a replacement a month of so later via my insurance, which I still have to this day. And similarly, it still works but is showing signs of impending death. Might hit up the local used electronics places to see if I can get another one...
Thanks! I've always been really anal about quality, so I was always VERY careful about how I recorded stuff (always in SP, use new tapes whenever possible) and later storing and taking care of the tapes. Good example - if you ever happen to see or own the Transformers 25th Anniversary Matrix of Leadership Edition, take a look at the toy commercials on the last disc. Those are all from my tapes, originally recorded on VHS in 1987. I made new transfers for Shout Factory from my old tapes. :)
nice video dude! i never had a lazer disc players . I remember seeing it on tv and saying "mommy can we get one " then she just said "no" and i never asked agian .
Still looks cool now to me... I never liked VHS tapes, the degradation was way too high for my liking, but I couldn't afford anything else. Betamax were much better quality in my experience, but not by much - smaller tapes, more than 3 hours often, and better picture (albeit slightly, and only my opinion)
Must fight back disapointment over missing out on laser disc, anger welling up inside again, Raz mad arrrrrrrgh! HEHE been waiting for this one that was awesome buddy! Damn WB I wanna see The Blade Runner picture quality! Ahh well maybe someday eh?
Looks like you had more money than sense. My god thats a load of money.
and there is nothing wrong with VHS. its the old argument that a better technology is superior, in some cases yes, in others, no. for all its greatness, it had so many flaws money for 1.
As a hardcore movie buff, it was a no-brainer. There was simply no better quality format available at the time. Not to mention the extras that mant titles had, whereas VHS was barebones releases 99% of the time. Plus most LD releases of movies were in widescreen, VHS was 99% fullscreen. In short, TONS of reasons why I went LD, and they were all perfectly valid reasons being a film enthusiast.
Also, I was BUYING movies on VHS at the time. So really there wasn't a big difference between buying them on VHS or LD. Similar to the difference between DVD and Blu-0ray now. Yes, you pay a premium for the extra quality, but for a film buff that was a small price to pay for all the benefits of the format.
aah, you were buying VHS's also, in other videos in the way you were an absoloute LD purist, and refusing to buy DVD, i thought you were sort of swimming with the tide of technology and supporting the newest format.
but to be honest, i agree, i love film, and would guess that throughout the last 5 years i have spent an astronomical amount on dvd, and bluray, + cinema.
But still even then for around £1400, it really wouldnt be worth it. its too much, you could buy a car for that.
It's really just about content with me. If something comes out in two formats, of course I'll go for the higher quality version. But if it's only available on one format, then that's what I'll get. I still buy tons of DVDs, for example, because not everything is on Blu-ray. Ditto back then - I would buy my favorite movies on Laserdisc, but still bought a lot on VHS that wasn't on LD (or was just too expensive for me at the time)
Back in the UK the latest movies that was just released on rental used to cost around £60, so you had to wait for like four to six months for it to be released at retail price of between £9.99-£14.99,
I'm currently waiting for my Blu Ray player to be delivered. :-D
no you misunderstood me, i knew it was successful, i was referring to vhs, i knew the picture quality and sound was better, but i mean it would'nt catch on to a bigger market like vhs users at the time, due to the size of the laserdisc, and because you had to turn the disc over half way through the film, so when i said catch on i really should of said take over vhs
That was a great player! I actually liked it better than my second player. Sadly, this one was stolen a couple of years later and I couldn't get the same model as a replacement...
Hehehe....even after a VHS title would be "priced for sale" a few months later, movies would still cost 20-40 bucks. So really Blu-ray costs about the same. So why's everyone complaining? DVDs used to cost the same too (most new releases still do). I swear, Bargain Bins have distorted everyone's perception of what movies should cost...
Oh, and as to what happened with the player - it was stolen a little over two years later, before I paid it off. So I got a replacement form the insurance company, and bought out the cost of the first one.
I'd say they were both about equal. Each had features the other didn't... One thing I preferred about the second one is it had a jog/shuttle dial on both the unit AND the remote. My second model was also a Pioneer, the CLD-M401. That's the one I still have.

i've got the pioneer cdl d515 series and it is great
because it can play badly scratched and marked discs
and still preserved the original picture quality because
the the lasor beam light source can scan through it without
anything else touching discs if you get a fingure print on it
you can still play it without crashing .

Oh yeah, just wanted to ask you Sean:
You're one of the few earlier people (that I have seen) that are into quality, but all for the digital technologies.
What do you think of technologies like Vinyl records? The quality-side of it.
Apart from that they're not that convenient in size, like LDs, but also get dust on them and it affects the playback, etc.
Myself, even though nearly having landed in the MP3-player-era, they're really interesting to me.
And also about tube-stereo-amps and such?
DamageIncM 2 years ago
That's pretty awesome, or very awesome for the time of course.
Funny what number is in the model-number, cause what's the magic number in today's video-technology... ;)
Holy cr*p, didn't know that even CD-players were such a new thing though.
I knew the '90s was the decade of the CD pretty much (later also the DVD though).
But I've never really lived without a CD-player somewhere in the house.
guess my father was so keen on getting that stuff quickly.
Or maybe it's because Philips is Dutch. XD

What do you mean what did I mean? I was referring to recording some of the movie to a VHS tape.

it's funny, I too have gone through 2 players. The first broke, then I went out of town and my place was broken into. So it broke, then it was stolen. I got a replacement a month of so later via my insurance, which I still have to this day. And similarly, it still works but is showing signs of impending death. Might hit up the local used electronics places to see if I can get another one...
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
I've noticed nowadays it is very hard finding a good working LD player with the original remote control. You gotta be careful buying used players.

Wow, I'm amazed the picture on your video is so clean. I've ogt a video from 1995 (a home movie) and the picture is rubbish
Flipflopab 2 years ago

great vid. I got portable cd-player at the end of 1990. weird enough it had no place for batteries... remember the times...
waegiz37 2 years ago
Still looks cool now to me... I never liked VHS tapes, the degradation was way too high for my liking, but I couldn't afford anything else. Betamax were much better quality in my experience, but not by much - smaller tapes, more than 3 hours often, and better picture (albeit slightly, and only my opinion)

Also some quick calculations for you all:
31.95 * Three Years (32 months) = $1150.20
$1150.20 adjusted for inflation is $1674.21 today.
And you thought BluRay was expensive?
RichGilly 2 years ago
Yeppers! And that was a fairly cheap player at the time too, about mid-range for price.

LOL. He was so gentle with that CD... even pushing it in by the clear center ring.
Haha. I was like that at first... but now I just throw around CDs and DVDs the only media I baby are BluRay
RichGilly 2 years ago
Hehehe...the irony with that being, that Blu-rays can actually take more physical punishment than any of 'em! :D

Looks like you had more money than sense. My god thats a load of money.
and there is nothing wrong with VHS. its the old argument that a better technology is superior, in some cases yes, in others, no. for all its greatness, it had so many flaws money for 1.
rorrt 2 years ago
As a hardcore movie buff, it was a no-brainer. There was simply no better quality format available at the time. Not to mention the extras that mant titles had, whereas VHS was barebones releases 99% of the time. Plus most LD releases of movies were in widescreen, VHS was 99% fullscreen. In short, TONS of reasons why I went LD, and they were all perfectly valid reasons being a film enthusiast.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
Also, I was BUYING movies on VHS at the time. So really there wasn't a big difference between buying them on VHS or LD. Similar to the difference between DVD and Blu-0ray now. Yes, you pay a premium for the extra quality, but for a film buff that was a small price to pay for all the benefits of the format.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
aah, you were buying VHS's also, in other videos in the way you were an absoloute LD purist, and refusing to buy DVD, i thought you were sort of swimming with the tide of technology and supporting the newest format.
but to be honest, i agree, i love film, and would guess that throughout the last 5 years i have spent an astronomical amount on dvd, and bluray, + cinema.
But still even then for around £1400, it really wouldnt be worth it. its too much, you could buy a car for that.
rorrt 2 years ago

my brother in law had a laserdisc, i knew it would'nt catch on due to the size of the laserdisc itself
measuringstick 2 years ago
Yeah, it only lasted about 22 years. Not successful at all! :P
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
LMAO!
MrMovieNight 2 years ago
no you misunderstood me, i knew it was successful, i was referring to vhs, i knew the picture quality and sound was better, but i mean it would'nt catch on to a bigger market like vhs users at the time, due to the size of the laserdisc, and because you had to turn the disc over half way through the film, so when i said catch on i really should of said take over vhs
measuringstick 2 years ago
Ah, yes. That is quite true, LD always remained something of a "niche" format, for hardcore movie nuts and quality buffs.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
I had the same player, I was as impressed as you were back in the day :)
ascullycom 2 years ago
That was a great player! I actually liked it better than my second player. Sadly, this one was stolen a couple of years later and I couldn't get the same model as a replacement...
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
loved the this is the date this is the time bit funny
xplayfan21 2 years ago 2
Did you end up buying that particular player three years later?
One hundred bucks for a VHS?? Blu Ray is so much cheaper.
DarthGaras 2 years ago
Hehehe....even after a VHS title would be "priced for sale" a few months later, movies would still cost 20-40 bucks. So really Blu-ray costs about the same. So why's everyone complaining? DVDs used to cost the same too (most new releases still do). I swear, Bargain Bins have distorted everyone's perception of what movies should cost...
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
Oh, and as to what happened with the player - it was stolen a little over two years later, before I paid it off. So I got a replacement form the insurance company, and bought out the cost of the first one.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
Was your 2nd LD player better than your CLD-1080?
Both the LD players I had are entry level units.
Riddler95 2 years ago
I'd say they were both about equal. Each had features the other didn't... One thing I preferred about the second one is it had a jog/shuttle dial on both the unit AND the remote. My second model was also a Pioneer, the CLD-M401. That's the one I still have.

@Zaranyzerak
Showing how the insides of a CLD-M401 works, especially when swtiching CDs, would make a most interesting video.
Watcher3223 2 years ago
@Zaranyzerak
You still have a CLD-M401?
If so, maybe you can make a video of its insides while playing and switching CDs.
The CLD-M series used an interesting mechanism for switching discs.
