Doesn't look like you have a speedo healer on here? Maybe you have one now. I put one on mine last year and it helps a lot. Now I don't have to guess when i pass cops.
Haha just 1 of third things huh? That happens sometimes...I was just curious cause I'm training to be a tech at MMI myself so this kind if stuff interest me...and u and me both r dreaming of the new 10r, dam i want 1 lol
@speedemon103 They weren't able to tell me much. My friend was the mechanic who inspected it and rebuilt it...and his opinion is "it's just one of those things" haha. That's not saying much, but it's guess work. It was likely some small imperfection that just got magnified. The bike has over 30,000 miles on it now and I still ride it hard. I'm really daydreaming about the new 2011 ZX10....if only it came in red
Its great that you're happy and riding again but your resale value for the bike will now be lower (compared to a bike that never blew) - most people don't want to touch a rebuild engine. Did you try and insist on a new engine?
i have this same bike-love it!! mine only has 4k miles, but no problems at all. did they say what they thought might have caused this major failure? also, what did they charge you to fix it? my bike only came with a 1 year/1000 mile warranty. after that i am on my own. luckily i can fix it if it breaks, but everything i have heard or read about this machine says it's bulletproof. just bad luck? idk....
@licmy3balls yep - just bad luck on my part. It was fixed under warranty and it's been pretty muc h perfect ever since. I know have just over 20,000 miles on it in the 2.5 years I've had it. I still have faith in Kawi and plan on getting more in the future.
@danmu thats good you still had a warranty. in the 20k miles youve had it how many vavle adjustments have you had done? i am in the process of getting the factory service manual for mine but i have heard several different things about when this needs to be done. my rule is dont fix what isnt broken but the dealers always try to scare you into shit you may not really need.
@licmy3balls I've had no valve adjustments at all -- the bike is running very well. With that said, even though it's not broken, within a month I want to go through and look at the bike closely top to bottom....and extra-special inspection of everything.
@danmu right on. i had heard every 10k but that sounded a little excessive. i dont plan to worry about it until there is a loss of power. good to know you have that many miles on it, thanks for posting! i say again, this is a great machine. i have had different sport bikes over the years and this is the best machine ive ever ridden.
@licmy3balls I agree...although I had an initial problem, I've definately loved this bike. I plan on sticking with Kawi for my next bike too. I'm not sure if I'll be with a 1000 or a 1400. I've not had a 1400 yet, so it might be fun to try it out.
maybe if you were a little more easy on the bike you wouldn't have problems? noted from other videos. but if its still on waranty tear that mother fucker up.
I can see why it broke (shattered) a piston.NEVER EVER EVER BUY A USED BIKE! i ITS SO HARD TO SEE WHEN THAY HAVE HAD THE SHIT KICKED OUT OF THEM. And just a note on the your last video, a motor with a shattered piston will not idle. Yours jumped time, bent a valve, broke a ring land
heya...it was a new bike (at the time)...6000 miles (I bought it was 0 miles). I have what's left of the piston on my desk - it did shatter. I'm dumbfounded that it could idle. I actually had to ride it about 150 miles after it screwed up and it still took the beating. kinda amazing, really
Break in? what's that? Ain't it something burglars do? In the UK we call it running in. If so, I always thought the idea is not to labour the motor for the 1st 600 or so miles, and this fella seems to be doing just fine. Nice bike mate and hope it goes well from now on.
Whyteboy no offence but if you are serious with your comments re break in man you obviously know little about engines! He didn't thrash it , the rpm's were constantly run up and down the range , Never hit the rev limiter etc.I'd say perfect break in procedure.
PS I know what the book says - I own one also!! First oil change at 500 miles then by 1000miles you should be able to ride it normally if you do it right just don't try for 200mph straight up dudes!
well after watchin this wideo its easy to see why the bike had a problem in the first place 650 miles and your ridin it like that try a proper break in and you wont have problems with your bike
no offense, but you dunno what you're talking about :) I did do a proper break in before and after the bike broke down. My Kawi dealership was satisfied that I didn't cause the issue (they know me well) and that it was just "one of those things". I break in my bikes by the book. now, at 14k miles, all is still perfect (knock on wood). Thanks for watching, though. You're in Cincy...maybe u should make it down to Lex sometime.
well know i must misunderstood the video then cuz you said a freshly rebuilt motor with 6xx miles on it i too having a zx10 know that the most important thing is the break in but then i clearly see you tackin over 4 grand which isnt proper break and and from my understanding after a rebuild your suppose to atleast follow the first 600 mile break in im
glad your bike runs good and you got tons of miles outta it i maybe should have worded it differently. i would love to ride sometime if i end up keeping this bike we might click up this year if not next year for me
yeah, I think maybe I wasn't overly clear in the vid. The first part of the vid was shot with 650 break-in miles and the road section was shot a few days later with way more than 650 on the rebuild (I add up miles quickly heh).
the 10 is the best 1000, hands down!! glad you got the rebuilt engine. I got 1800 miles on my engine, and I bought it in august 2006! I dont even want another bike, when this engine breaks down, im just gonna buy another one or rebuild. there atually good for 100K, believe it or not. just change the oil, and adjust valves. Stay, green ( or orange). peace
the problem was a piston and perhaps the head/valves if they were damaged in the failure. Those pieces need to be replaced is all. Why have mechanics at all if engines cannot be rebuilt?
Sounds much better on 4 cylinders than 3.

New motor for me or a rebuilt motor with hi-comp pistons, head and cams package.
I think they fucked you in the ass by just rebuilding it with stock parts rather than give a completely new OEM motor.
6k miles and a broken piston...piston wrist pin? Not accetable!!
