@kiliparrot My parrots favorite toy is a ball. Will this keep him from playing with them when I don't tell him to fetch? Or will he still play with the balls in his cage?
@Lesie1998 you could use a bead maybe?? just make sure isn't big enough that they can't swallow it. The clicker thing he is using is just a training clicker and you can usually get tim at pet stores for cheap. I got mine at Petsmart for 50 cents
First of all, let me remark that this teaching method is pretty ingenious and I'm once again astounded. Second, Let me also note that it's kind of funny how dramatic you look when you turn around to ignore Truman. You have the same exasperated look of a father on the verge of scolding his teenage son. I almost expect you to turn around and say, "Truman, I thought I made it quite clear: you don't go out with your friends until your room is clean."
@toughguitar1 millet spray(s) for small birds like cockatiels and budgies, or probably something like nuts/seeds/berries/honeynut stick treat to chew on for bigger birds. Bye!
Awesome video! It's definitely given be a better idea of now to teach this behaviour, but I can't seen to get my cockatiel to pick any of the props up... When he does he throws them away, but he usually gets frustrated and flies back to his cage. I know it's not a simple behaviour but man! I didn't think it would be quite this hard.
@Jade244 Two things you should check out: first of all read the article linked under the video. I provide a couple ideas on how to work with flingers. Secondly, take a look at my budgie videos where the budgie does fetch. It's a much quicker kind of deal than a larger parrot but it works. While this is a super easy trick to teach a larger parrot, it took a month to teach it to budgie. For smaller birds easier tricks are turn around, jump through ring, and the bat
@lemurfan123 To avoid reinforcing flinging the ball or dropping it somewhere that isn't the cup. In order to learn fetch, he has to only be rewarded when dropping it specifically into the cup.
@cod4goddude2 Yes but it takes an awfully long time to teach them this. Go to my channel and go way back in the archives. You'll find videos of Duke the Budgerigar fetching.
@cod4goddude2 These big parrots are just to smart seeing such progress in few days, I had 4 budgies for the past couple of years and they were just able to perform extreemly simple tasks that were only in range of commands like "come here" or "jump" or calling by name. But some of them might be much more talented like Duke, I was amazed how much tricks he is able to perform.
@DExUS5 Actually I think the smaller parrots (like budgies) learn in a much shorter span of time. Duke was taught the turn around trick in a single day. It took Kili closer to a week to learn the same thing. The hard trick for budgie were wave and fetch because those are very unnatural behaviors for them. They are ground feeders and don't use their feet to eat and don't pick up objects. So those were skills that had to be taught entirely from scratch.Turn around, tube, ring, bat, etc were easy.
@kiliparrot My birds were just to scared of every object, they were not scared from people, but I dont know , if you got anything else then food near them , they run away or started panicking.
But on the other hand, they were all runaway birds which I was able to catch after rain since they were wet. Only one was from store, and that was the only one which has responded to much more commands.
Currently I own a lovebird, and he is just to wild, but has much potencial because he is curious.
@proviewsg It was today. Not under the best of circumstances either. I just posted the full story to my blog (there is a link from my channel page to the trained parrot blog).
@MsHorselover8 That's cool but still really wouldn't change anything. This one is 7 minutes and just 1 out of 3 parts any way. Thanks for letting me know, I'll keep that in mind for next time.
@kiliparrot No problem, glad i can help. Truman is learning pretty fast. Im also teaching Maximo the retreive but was unsure what cue i should give for now its "go get it" and "put it in" i think ill make for him to understand both "fetch" and "go get it"
@MsHorselover8 Truth is you don't really need a verbal cue. The parrot knows what to do when it sees the props. The cue is more for encouragement and transfer of concept to new props.
@kiliparrot After i watched your video again i think i started to notice that cause it looked like once Truman started to do better you just showed the bowl at the end and he went to it. Hmp...
Before anyone asks: this footage is from before Truman's injury. I was going to do some more training with him before posting but since he got injured, we probably won't finish this for a while so I figured I'd post it now. Second of all, I realize I totally botched the website URL when I said it in the video. It kind of came out as a hybrid of theparrotforum and trained parrot blog. The correct URL is in the more info description below the video. I hope you enjoy.
