Fuchsia isn't stupid, she's just ignorant. The comes acrss more in the book then the show. Also the show sympathizes with the manipulative Steerpike a lot more then the book ever did. In the book he was never attracted to Fuchsia at all.
Fuschia aint really stupid, even in the filmed version... just naive, and ('cause of her upbringing) somewhat arrogant and dismissive to anyone below her. But stupid? Hardly. Steerpike can fool anyone, from the highest to the lowlliest. Fuschia is, for such a pro deceiver, and easy pray: 15-16y-o and alone.
I think it is a bit unfair that Fuschia is represented as 'stupid'. In the books she isn't, she is actually quite intelligent but because she has been deprived an education, she can sometimes come across as ignorant.
Fuschia was actually my favorite character in the book. But she was too dreamy for her own good. Of course, Steerpike is also cool. But I hated him for what he did to Fuschia!
Perché Gormenghast nn è dato in Italia? Bella la serie inglese, molto bello il libro da cui è tratto e che la serie riprende con molta fedeltà. QUANDO LA BELLEZZA SI UNISCE AL TALENTO!
Shes a very attractive and good looking girl but very thick very stupid and very stuck up. Steerpike on the other hand is pure evil and everyone in the series dislikes which is understandable but at the same time he s the main character and everyones favourite character even through hes just pure evil i can remember when i was nine i wanted to be just like Steerpike apart from the killing lol
i've seen hamlet and thought how differently it could be played, like this i suppose, because steerpike is not bitter as i recall, he's a character in a nether world, indeed the lack of netherworldliness of this production is it's downfall, gormenghast could only exist in the mind, the scenario is not in any way planet earth mundane... the architecture is surreal for a start, time and space are not fixed in 3 dimensions in gormenghast i read...
The BBC version was horrendous! They morphed all the characters too much! Read the books, Fuchsia wasn't a ditz, in the book she was more or less a girl trapped in a woman's body and was smart--proof?--the author said so. And Steerpike's pursuit of Fuchsia was nothing more then political--and he was suppose to be hideous--high-shoulders, pale, bulging forehead, crooked teeth, tiny, close set red eyes! No pretty boy JRM's!

really, I thought the Nanny Slagg was ok...

Neve McIntosh as Fuschia ruined the BBC's Gormenghast.
And June Brown (Dot Cotton) as Nanny Slagg was not a good choice either.
Swelter, Flay and Prunesqallor were good though, and Steerpike could have been worse,

To be honest, Irma may be ridiculous, but I would probably act in exactly the same way if a topless Jonathan Rhys Meyers walked into my lounge.
*dreams with stupid grin on face*
I love this program. I has the DVD *licks it*

Steerpike is great. I love the smile on his face just before Fuschia starts spinning and tosses herself off the cliff.

Steerpike is a bloody genius :D
Though I think the BBC production should've kept to the very ugly and creepy Steerpikey, despite JRM's brilliant performance :/
Fuschia is not a retard!

Nanny Slagg is excellent. "Not you, Kitchen Boy!" -slam-. And the hissy fit that follows is priceless.
venusinfurs41 5 years ago 3
yay! Nanny Slagg squashing Steerpike can never fail to win.
And I protest - Fuschia is utterly delightful!
Do feel free to put up more clips :) I love this film so much, and haven't seen it in years...
