@dannyd1224 The business that made these particular dulcimers is out of business, but you can get a nice electric dulcimer from Tom Yocky. Just google "Tom Yocky electric dulcimer." You'll see me playing it on a lot of the other videos on my channel.
@VadiaRotor It's some of both, depending on what you're trying to do. Since the strings can be tuned to different notes, you actually end up with 1 to 3 different diatonic scales in play at once, depending on the dulcimer's tuning.
@mrbangham I'm glad you like it. You can find a video of my band doing it live too... just google Twang Darkly and find it on the video playlist on our page (it's at twangdarkly -dot- com )
@Grandpadew Thanks! Youtube won't let me share links in comments, but there are a number of recordings released since the one that contains this track. Just google "No Matter the Train Records." Or look for my band, Twang Darkly. My other stuff is available directly in iTunes, but it is available as download in various formats on the No Matter the Train Records site.
@18betz Thanks so so much for the kind words. I'm glad it moved you. Check out my band playing it live at a recent show via the video list on my band's web page -- just google Twang Darkly (can't post URLs in these comments)
@MrDumia Thanks. Unfortunately, the builder's workshop was recently destroyed; it's unclear whether or not there will be any more dulcicasters. You might try searching google for "Tom Yocky electric dulcimer" instead.
Wow, let me magpie Konadrinker 65: I'm blown away. What the Viet Cong tried and failed, you've managed to do my friend, but pleasantly so. You've taken that simple wooden box with silver strings to - and over - the limits, man. KUDOS and *****
LOL -- I just tried it and they do kind of make a weird but appealing combo. When I put the link to this song on the Vacancy page, I fretted briefly that "someone's going to click this while the other keeps playing and wonder why Flags sounds so damn weird..."
Love the tone on the electric...hmmm might need to talk to Quinton about that. I really like the feel of the tune too. You've got a very natural right hand that would lend itself well to flatpicking. I just posted my first vid of that style here if your interested. Keep up the creativity...great job.
Thanks, Gary. You should definitely look into one of the dulcicasters -- he's doing great work, and you'd have loads of fun with the banjo voice I'm guessing. I enjoyed watching your videos -- that's a beautifully crafted dulcimer you're playing in those...
HOLY SMOKES! That was sweet and with a beautiful tone and melody line played with awesome embellishments. You've taken the traditional melody/drone style into the 21st century. I look forward to more! What kind of amp are you using for those sweet tones from the Dulcicaster?
This dulcicaster just begs to be played. Wish I had more time and energy on hand. I'll find some soon enough, though... and then, look for a new piece.
Oh wow, beautiful

is it harder or easier to play with diatonic scale?

I guess I'd say it's "different."

great instrument. But why the frets are placed so irregularly?

Wow just played this at the same time as your Vacancy-electric dulcimer weirdness vid.
The two synced up pretty nicely for really full effect I wasnt expecting.
Awesome songs and surprisingly awesome together.

Your sound reminds me of guitarist Vini Reilly of the Durutti Column. Outstanding.

Hey Michael --
I just listened to this song like 20 times in a row while ordering my DulciCaster. You reached exactly my style of playing. Thanks buddy !

Thanks! I'm playing the Dulcicaster through a Line 6 Pod amp emulator -- I think the model was a "Brit Class A," but I wouldn't swear to that... :-)
