  • Wow!

  • a stan clone?

  • yes, the violin playing is super!

  • This is just so happy, energetic and marveous ... love it

  • So cool how a chorus gets into it so spontaneously; very moving

  • Nathan is playing this weekend in Courtenay at The Vancouver Island Music Fest.

  • He reminds me so much of his Dad. Wish they could both perform together!

  • I find irony in the Exxon Mobile on the front of the (Alaska still remembers the Tanker Valdez like the Gulf of Mexico will now remember BP)

  • Goddamn this is good. you can't hear this and stay seated. Wish to hell I was there

  • Yes it's uncanny how much he sings like Stan. But Stan was still the best!

  • gives me cold chills every time!!!

  • Wow, he really does sound like his father. Holy crap!

  • Sounds so much like Stan. Brings a tear to my eye listening to this

  • @chelseakatarina yea me too was just thinking about stan rogers as i went and seen Garnett the other night, then i looked up an old song that John Gorka did after stans death it is called( thats how legends are made)

  • i'm from canso.....this is epic

  • What a heartwarming video. True spirit.

  • sounds like his father

  • The apple fell near to the tree! for sure.

  • i actually think he doesnt sound like his father at all

his father had a very powerfull voice

nathan has that but to a diffrent degree

  • It's absolutely hair-raising how much he sounds like Stan, whilst simultaneously retaining his individuality. Genetics counts for something, I guess. Great vid.

  • Genetics counts for almost everything in fact, but of course the human experience is inevitably influenced in significant ways by it's environment.

  • God, he sounds so like his father!

  • Wow.. Thanks Mike for turning me on to this. Really amazing! We must get him to play the Philly Festival sooner than later!

  • that can be arranged....

  • wow he sure does sound like his daddy.

  • Holy shit, he sounds just like stan rogers. That's damn incredible.

  • Simply... Amazing.

Thank you for posting this magnificent rendition by Nathan and his fellow artists.

  • wow!!

  • Ok, less than a week till it all hits the fan again in Canso, NS. Thanks to all 30,812 of you who have watched this over the last 22 months. I am in your debt. Now, GET YER ASSES TO CANSO FOR JULY 3!!!!!!

  • This is the greatest song that has ever been written. Whenever me and my friends are together, we always belt it out. Tune. Absolute tune. Long live Stan.

  • Amen. I never got to see Stan, but if I get to see Nathan, I'll be happy.

  • We have a daughter with autism who loved stan rogers and all his songs. She is basically non verbal but a music prodegy. Stan's songs she know and will actually sing the words to some of them.

When we heard Nathan ir was like a reincarantion !!

What a great voice, just like his dads.

  • I absolutely got shaken and got the shivers when I heard Nathan Rogers voice.. and not to mention he is a spitting image of his father in voice and looks... I hope Nathan follows in his fathers footsteps because we need composers and singers like his father was and how he is.. My 5 yr old son loves Stan's music.. and he loves Nathan's music too.. Keep up the excellent legacy that your dad left you and God bless you!

  • Beautiful, tears in my eyes.

  • Very very very nice arrangement and a Hell of a voice on young Mister Rogers. Just a guess here but I think his father would have been proud and would have approved.

  • omg i could have sworn it was stan himself singing my god he sounds like his dad Go Nathan Go:)

  • Tone-perfect for his father. Amazing. I love this song.

  • Wow . . . wow . . . wow . . . absolutely love this. I only wish that the final verse hadn't been cut off. I didn't want to miss one word.

  • I just got chills hearing Nathan for the first time ... sounds so much like Stan. Wonderful!

  • Holy hell does he ever sound like his father.

Sends chills down my spine. I'm a west coaster, but my father raised me on Stan's music. Pretty amazing stuff.

  • So good.

  • We live again through our children. It's clear Stan is still alive in Nathan.

  • Anyone know where we can find a full version of this clip

  • I have the full song cut into two parts....I really need to put it together. I asked my friend to shoot me (the violinist) on this song using my old camera, and the clips it takes are limited to 3 minutes. :-(

  • I too would love to see the full version of this. I was there for my first experience of Summerfolk. What a beginning!!!

I just saw him perform again last night in a small and cozy venue near London.Throat singing and all!

  • @musicferret Any word on getting the other parts online? I love the violin work in this performance.

  • @musicferret , We've waited 2 years! Please put the full clip on.

  • makes me cry---we saw stan at unbsj and were planning to see him in st andrew's nb just before he died----his son is amazing.....

  • bees knees

  • This is a really good version of the Northwest Passage. I appreciate how both Nathan and Garnet have created their own original interpretations of this piece.

  • Wow...just like Stan was here...spent many a night with Stan at the LBR...way back in the early 70's.....will never forget you! Living now in the Motown....but Stan will always be one of my favs....MISS YOU STAN!

    G

  • It amazes me how much Nathan sounds like his dad.

  • Inspirational and emotional

  • Is it a joke that Exxon is putting this on?

  • well, no, the oil industry is a key part of maritime economincs. Also, you think an event like this could go off without sponsorship? It could be worse, it could be Air Canada

  • Gads. I still try to avoid Exxon's Gas, and Hazelwood ran drunk on his rock 20 years ago.

Of course it's all picking poison.

  • How did I miss him -hearing his dad on the beat when i was a cop in Halifax and at my Uncles beach in Port Shorem just down the road from Canso, I would have to look to see that it wasn't his Da! My God his burly size isn't his but the soul of the song is there and thats what STAN sung with! His bro did a good job but MY God his son is cut with the same cloth that Stans Jib was..See ya in 08's fest..Thanks for thius video ..Jeff

  • When he yelled "come on", sounded just like Stan up there. Good vid.

  • I was sitting in the second row listening to Nathan doing this song - we all started crying it was THAT good.

If you can ever get to Canso on the first weekend of July go to Stanfest - you'll never forget it!

  • where is Canso?!?! nathan sounds sooooo much like stan its hard to believe, i love ol stan so this brings a tear to my eye...

  • Canso is in Cape Breton Nova Scotia. Stanfest is coming up in a few months, they just stopped accepting new performers a few weeks ago, you can probably still get to see the show though.

  • april wines playing and i think thier still accepting cuz my name for volunteerring was placed a while a go

  • I was talking about performers not volunteers...their site says they're done accepting new people

  • Common mistake, Canso is NOT on Cape Breton Island, but is to the south of it on the Mainland about an hours drive along route 16 in Guysborough County. Cheers

  • really i dont remeber people crying although i think i was walking to the handmade village

  • holy shit

  • I's still smilin, thanks Natnan and musicferret.

  • amazing.....stan lives!

  • where did this take place? i would have liked to have gone

  • As someone said on mudcat cafe "the apple falls near to the tree"

& if you are here & you don't use Mudcat cafe, you should, google it!

  • sounds just like stan did

  • Wow & then some!

    Skipy

  • An epic song...it stirs the heart and empowers the soul!! It makes me think of wild, ocean waves and stormy skies...of ages gone when men were brave and dreams were bright and clear..

  • Agreed... that song kept one foot in front of another when I walked through 20+ miles of the Brooks Range.

But then I found the send-up lyrics "Northwest Tollway" about the traffic between chicago and Madison.

"Westward from Lake Michigan, 'tis there 'twas said to lie

A rotten stretch of roadway where excitement goes to die

Seeking easy sailing, finding just construction zones

And a long and winding line of orange cones "

    Been there, done that, too.

    :-/

  • LOL very funny

bin there with the Brooks range stuff

there's a video of a guy washed overboard in Lake Superior who saved himself by singing Mary Ellen Carter to himself until he was picked up.

  • Wow gives me chills

  • Oh, wow. I was there for this! It was absolutely amazing to see so many people just stand up and clap to this, out of respect to Stan. Nathan did an amazing job with this song. Simply amazing.

  • OH! There's a STANFEST??!! I can't imagine anything more groovy than getting to sing TNWP or other Stan tunes with a crowd of like-minded people! Usually I'm driving to work or back, belting out the tunes along with the cassette! :) I was expecting to be in Calgary at the end of July. Maybe I just need a cross-country road trip!!

    Fantastic, Nathan!

    Linda in Vancouver

  • Hey there Linda!

BEGINNING of July. Check the website for more. Maybe you can be in Calgary too! Going to the Calgary Folk Fest?

    Cheers!

    Nathan Rogers

  • This song always gives me chills, especially the "unpublished" verse. While the acapella version is great, this is by far my favorite version.

  • Thank you so much for this! it brought tears to my eyes also; I never knew you were out there Nathan. Beautiful!

    Nathan

  • Thanks very much for posting this video. I have been doing this accompanied version of NWP for about 5 years now. I cannot express how greatful I am to hear Canadians singing this song together like it was a national anthem.

    Cheers!

    Nathan Rogers

  • My pleasure! Thanks for Dawna for taking it from the crowd for us. Sorry the solo was mediocre!

  • Ha!

It was MY fault that you didn't know which chord series to follow. That was a lot of fun anyways!! I heard you're getting married!!

    Congrats!!

    Nate

  • Is a full version of this, er, version, available anywhere? I'd appreciate any leads.

  • You may have to wait, but I think this is the only version. If you do get any leads, let me know!

    Nathan

  • This is the only video clip we got on my cheap camera, as it has a timer that prevents taping for long times. Nathan, you'll have to hurry up and release this on your next album! Once again, you need fiddle, i'll come out to Winterpeg!
