Wow, "that's what she said", I like it. When I win the Nobel Prize, that's exactly what I'm going to say, to everyone's consternation, just before I beat Bill Gates to death with his own shoes. Yeah.
I think "that's what she said." had it's origins with stupid teens who thought they were clever. It could have been any decade, but Wayne's World was a place that a lot of people lifted it from, if not the origin.
Wow people are dumb. The only reason Michael Scott says it on The Office is because it's such a terrible, dated joke from the 90s. And no one would ever actually say it thinking it it funny these days. That in itself IS the joke on The Office.
I read that this is one of the earliest uses of this joke but this joke is a play on the double entandre "said the actress to the bishop" (which is basically the exact same joke but really culturally specific) which can be traced back as far as Edwardian England (1900 to 1910)
i think it was actually a running joke in the SNL skits that found its way into the movie. so not technically the origin, but they still deserve the credit for it
best joke ever..i'm trying to translate it to my language but it just sounds stupid and pointless..sometimes I wish we speak English in my country, there's so much cool jokes and phrases in English :/
I remember watching this movie about a year ago and thinking how crazy it is that this saying suddenly got hugely popular in the past couple years but it originated from here. I was kind of in shock and awe!
While we may never know the exact origin of the phrase, one of the earliest, if not first, occurrences of That's what she said in popular culture can be traced back to 1975, uttered by Chevy Chase during Weekend Update on the first season of the popular sketch comedy show "Saturday Night Live".
When I was in high-school, I worked for a local department store. The owner was this little French guy who would show up for a few hours a day - mostly to joke with the staff. He ALWAYS said "that's what she said" at those opportunities. One time, after he said it, he looked at me and said "see - it fits almost anywhere" and I said - "that's what she said". This was LONG before Mike Myers even had a career - trust me. LOL.
@Chimichanga12594 its a slapper from some college in the 80's that first coined it, like if you look into the moonwalk, it wasnt michael jackson who invented it, they just bring it to the masses
They didn't really steal it that's kind of the point of the joke although most people don't seem to realize it. Micheal is supposed to be so much of a throwback and a loser that he's still using catchphrases from the 80s. That is all.
