"you really can link EVERYTHING that is good in comedy now to Mr Show."
Maybe if your memory doesn't go past 1995. This show is heavily influenced by Monty Python (1969) and SNL. It's not inventing anything new. It's just staffed with a lot of stand-up comics.
The best part is Jay Johnston at 6:23. The fact that he dressed up in an skydiver's outfit and went out to a field just for this one bit always makes me laugh.
On the Mr Show DVD audio commentary Bob Odenkirk said Monty Python and SCTV were the greatest comedy sketch shows [I would place Mr Show in that pantheon without qualms] and although he doesn't say it in so many words that working on Saturday Night Live taught him how NOT to do a comedy sketch show. David Cross' performance really makes this sketch because he fully commits to the character. As well as laughing at him, you really do feel sorry for him at the end.
Sooo many good things in this sketch. One of my favs is when Bob says "mother!" and pushes her out of the way. But the kicker is in the next scene the door is shut! lolol. Also watch from 1:16 and look how slow his mother is walking. Idk if these were on purpose or not, so funny!
Right now there's a ridiculous show on the History channel linking Biblical angel encounters to "real life" extra terrestrial speculations. Immediately I thought of this.
Not sure, I remember seeing this when it was on HBO with a room full of people and we all thought it was fuck, but then again we were drinking, so maybe you're right, but fuck is funnier, (didn't mean butt fuck)
I seem to remember this sketch being the inspiration for a game, made by an editor for EGM with the Playstation game RPG Maker. It got referenced a few times in the magazine, but they never went into detail. I always wondered what it was about...
This is my favorite Mr. Show sketch and one of the funniest things I've ever seen on television. I laughed so hard the first time I saw it, I almost died.
Dr. Retarded gets me every time. even when i see it coming a mile away.
@baph333333 it's meant to be a parody of the show "Sightings" which was around in the mid-late 90's and served as a precursor to a lot of those history channel shows. That's why this show is called "Probings".
I like this sketch so much my friend actually bought me a novelty horror record at a used vinyl shop when he saw it. it's called 'Monster Mash: Sounds of Terror!'
includes songs such as 'the mummy's revenge', 'frankenstein returns', and 'curse of the zombies'. lol
@NakedWombat666 For some reason, I've always imagined Glenn Beck in a Mr Show sketch. His paraonia is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo funny!
I can't believe the laugh track! Who are these callous people? Don't they realize that this poor man has suffered irreparably? As this documentary notes, James Whitcroft's life had forever been changed by what he could only describe as a . . . wa- . . . wa-
it sounded like David was saying when he was hypnotized "the mummy. he loves to fuck" but closed captioning reads "he loves to funk" regardless when i first heard that line i almost fell out of my bed laughing so hard.
@Rasputa666 It's true, Tim and Eric is totally a much lamer Mr. Show that totally missed the point.... The only funny aspects of that show were drawn directly from Mr. Show.
Tim and Eric do borrow some elements from Mr. Show, but their focus is more on singular bizarre folks, not stupid movements like this one talks about.
