In fact, eastern Canada is OVERPOPULATED with Seals, so you're not going to see the species wipe out for a long time, my friend. @shrakecameron We do eat them for food, we hardly leave the bodies.. Here anyway. Newfoundland is different since we use the seals as an actual resource instead of for fur. We make arthritis, heart, and other medication out of the seals. Sure, I'm all for animal welfare.. But people who leave the bodies are idiots and are wasting a valuable resource. We never let anything to go to waste here. I'm referring to Newfie in general, which is a completely different, resourceful, and a humane hunt.

Clubbing helpless animals to death for a product no one wants (EU & WTO ban on seal fur imports) is a waste of OUR tax payer dollars. The "seal massacre" is heavily subsidized by OUR tax payer dollars and loses money annually! $20 million spent netted less than $1 million return last year it (less than 1/2 of 1% of the combined GDP of NL and Labrador.) Off-season fishermen and not the Inuit carry out this massacre. Subsistence hunt by the Inuit is not the issue.

I was on a deep sea trawler, off the labardour fishing for cod with the seals! We bring back our net filled with fish often with only one bite taken out of the "scattered one" by seals. Here's me yarn, Fisheries Officers were placed on the boats to monitor the depletion of the fishstocks and we were not allowed to "take a seal" as one guy wanted one. When he(FO) went to sleep we accidentally ran in to one. The factory deck was hovering below C and that sucker still steamed heat.

No matter what the protesters say seals are 100% responsible for the destruction of the cod stocks. When they claim that humans are responsible for over-fishing what they really mean is that humans are responsible for over-fishing whatever is left of the stocks after the seals finish with them. The seal population needs to be killed off to the point where there is less than a million left.
