  • i still can't believe they didn't wear helmets or any driver protection. I can't decide whether that's tough or dumb.

  • Well, I was a control official for the '74 Cross and can assure you that helmets were required during competion, and the Mitsu works team all had driving suits.

This video was made after the event, as the camera shots inside and outside the car would not be possible during the event. Andrew's navigator, John Bryson, was in my car club and told me that Andrew was not REALLY trying to go very hard in this video.

Still, it shows how easy he makes it look.

  • @rallysjd

The in car footage was done after the event. but all other footage was from the event and Cowan and other crews chose not to wear helmets. There is a lot of footage of cars coming into controls at the end of stages with no helmets. It was 1975 or 1976 when the helmet rule came in.

    Regards Michael

  • Hmmm, if it's on film I guess it was so. Memories fade in 36 years, and perhaps I was thinking of the '75 or '76 Cross, where I also officiated at controls.

  • great video!!!

  • nice footage! Glad to see someone has posted a tidbit from a southern corss rally.
