I can tell coarse or fine thread just by looking at any bolt you hand me. I don't need to measure the threads per inch. Anyone with any kind of mechanical aptitude can. If the valley is wide it's coarse. If the valley is narrow it's fine.
If you need a specific size find one that fits your application smoothly and then use a gauge to tell you the proper pitch. Every Hardware store has one in the nuts and bolts section.
