Why does Rob Bell have weird theology? Easy, because he's not a Christian. He denies what the Bible teaches about God, man, the fall, sin, hell, faith, the atonement... he's being doing it for years. God's love & mercy endures forever. If He sentenced people to an eternity in Hell, how could His love & mercy endure forever? The Scriptures do not teach eternal punishment. God will judge fairly, as He sees fit.
Given time more people will discover that many of our medieval interpretations didn't reflect what the original biblical text meant. Rob just found that earlier and remains courageous. And not alone.

But seriously... the book "Slaves, Women & Homosexuals: Exploring the Hermeneutics of Cultural Analysis" concludes that "homosexuality is not a biblically sanctioned lifestyle" which is the opposite of what Todd Friel implies in this audio clip. So if Rob Bell agrees with the book, chances are he wouldn't approve of homosexuality either.

William Webb was one of my profs at Heritage Baptist College in Cambridge, ON. He was a great prof, and I have heard a lot on his book. I will have to read it for myself, but Todd I can tell you that Rob would have misplaced what William wrote in his book. William is against Homosexuality! That difference is judged by God and by a persons of the Christian faith based on your behavior. What would you say if a gay man or woman began to come to your church with their kids? How would you treat if you next door neighbors are gay and they lost their loved one? I've seen a few of his Nooma videos and they seemed fine, and his defense of his church, but I guess I would have to read his book before discussing the validity of his theology. Rob Bell is a heretic. He denies the existence of eternal hell, even though the Bible clearly teaches eternal punishment to the unrepentant(Matthew 25:41). God is love, but He is also holy and just. God doesn't owe anyone salvation because all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. God graciously offers salvation to all who will repent and put their faith in Jesus. Those who reject Jesus will be eternally separated from God in Hell.

Rob Bell says that there is no eternal punishment, and he thinks that all people will be eventually saved. From what i understand, the bible teaches that God is the eternal fire that burns forever, but does not consume like regular fire, hence the burning bush. rev 15 says the saints stand on a sea of glass mingled with fire. And that eternal punishment means eternal death.
You can actually prove this easily from the bible, but Bell is taking it to universalism which is total nonsense.

The good news is this: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16.

But seriously... the book "Slaves, Women & Homosexuals: Exploring the Hermeneutics of Cultural Analysis" concludes that "homosexuality is not a biblically sanctioned lifestyle" which is the opposite of what Todd Friel implies in this audio clip. So if Rob Bell agrees with the book, chances are he wouldn't approve of homosexuality either.

I've seen a few of his Nooma videos and they seemed fine, and his defense of his church, but I guess I would have to read his book before discussing the validity of his theology. Rob Bell is a heretic. He denies the existence of eternal hell, even though the Bible clearly teaches eternal punishment to the unrepentant(Matthew 25:41). God is love, but He is also holy and just. God doesn't owe anyone salvation because all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. God graciously offers salvation to all who will repent and put their faith in Jesus. Those who reject Jesus will be eternally separated from God in Hell.

@9tailedfoxgoddess When Christians, such as myself, say heretic, we mean a false teacher. Rob Bell is a false teacher, because he denies the clear teaching of the Bible. Rob Bell says that there is no eternal punishment, and he thinks that all people will be eventually saved. This is in direct contradiction with God's word, which teaches that the unrepentant will be eternally separated from God in Hell(Matthew 25:41).

@James5877 The sad things is Rob is partially right here, but extremely wrong at the same time. From what i understand, the bible teaches that God is the eternal fire that burns forever, but does not consume like regular fire, hence the burning bush. rev 15 says the saints stand on a sea of glass mingled with fire. And that eternal punishment means eternal death.
You can actually prove this easily from the bible, but Bell is taking it to universalism which is total nonsense.

@Denemoore I don't agree with anihilationism. The Bible teaches eternal consious punishment for the unrepentant. It doesn't teach that people cease to exist. The good news is this: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16.

@9tailedfoxgoddess "choice" is one of heretic's technical definition in the Greek word, hairesis; but like many words we use, its pejorative meaning that it took on, even in the bible, has become the one we use nearly exclusively. So, correcting him about using heretic in its common negative sense is rather meaningless to the main points of James5877's criticism.

Shocked that Friel would so lightly discard,even deny, a way of interpreting that represents women,slaves,homosexuals and other marginalised people.If Bell's hermeneutic is social justice, then it's like the Lukan Jesus' whose manifesto is laid-out in Lk4:16-22.The church ought to be the most inclusive place,reflecting Jesus' inclusivity,spending time with sinners,prostitutes,lepers,tax collectors.Please don't exclude people by narrowly pre-judging,and underestimating God's love for all.
