He's at the bar and his friend from the mob sits down by him and the guy knows that this guy is going to kill him for ratting them out years ago so the guy talks to his former friend and soon to be assissin recounting old times and then the man poisons his drink and the song ends abruptly because he dies.

@danageplane IMO, it's someone speaking to a friend he left many years ago, because of problems with the mafia...so it's kinda realted with Omerta, generally Viva Emptiness is about mafia, from what I see.

@danageplane It's written from the perspective of someone who broke the code of silence (omertá). He is given a new identity and a new life by the police, but after a long time an old friend comes to visit. He sort of knows what this means but he has so many strong feelings and unresolved questions about the life he left behind that the relief of someone to talk to makes for a heartwarming reunion. He realises he's been poisoned and asks his killer/friend to tell his family he loves them.

The song ends abruptly on the album it leads straight on to an instrumental.

This song is about a man sharing a last drink with an old friend who is there to kill him after the character's long life in hiding after involvement in organised crime. He accepts that the old friend is there to kill him and doesn't fight it. .

The instrumental it leads to is the heaviest track on the album and I think it signifies the main characters death.

Whilst there isn't any rapping there are loads of nu-metal riffs, rhythms and other NM traits. The drummer is a big nu-metal-head and used to list Disturbed as one of his influences *snigger*.

You've only got to compare this to LFDGD and Tonight's Decision to see that they ditched their unique sound for one that was more commercial.

I love katatonia and opeth, but most of what theyve done from this album onwards is watered down GASH. They started their own sound with Discouraged Ones, built on it with Tonight's Decision, took it to the next level with Last Fair Deal, then pissed it up the wall in favour of being Nu-metal-esque for sales reasons on this album.

This song is one of the few that sounds different on the album, but even then it just sounds like opeth. There's a tune on My Arms, Your Hearse that this sounds like

Add that to the rather unsettling way that the song abruptly ends as if with the final words of the narrator (not to mention the referrence to a numbness and something in his drink) and it becomes apparent that the song is about someone having been poisioned to death.
