button mashing doesn't really help because when you do anything it's through luck and you don't know what you pressed.

you should just do small combos and then find ways to extend them. i started with a 3 hit combo then gradually found ways to add an extra hit or two. now i have a 15 hit combo that's stronger than an x-ray and i can land every time.
