  • @redmr2na: the Daytona is putting on the brakes when the Cobra "rapes" it. Regardless, I love this movie and would be beyond happy with either one.

  • As people have pointed out, the same river bed is used in Gone in 60 Seconds and Terminator but, I think, it's also used for the car race scene in Grease!

  • Sorry but no car sound will ever beat the Daytona. If Beethoven made an engine...

  • Hey that's Bannon, nah it's another Cobra driving innocently down a river bed. LOL

  • The sound as they both come up the ramp out of the LA river, is one of my favorite sounds of this whole movie. I love the cobra. The thing just raped the Daytona off the ramp.

  • isnt cannonball run a rip of off this movie?

  • @lukatme2 Cannonball came out about the same time (weeks apart) - Cannonball Run came out much later (should have been called LameBall Run) Gumball Rally is the daddy of them all!!

  • @lukatme2 Yes , but it probably did better @ the box office because of all the big name stars. These stars were unknown or up and coming (ie gary busey, raul julia)

  • RIP Micheal Sarrazin.

  • the daytona played fetch on that cobra!!

  • @daltex81 no it didn't watch when they come out the LA basin; that Cobra ate that Ferrari for lunch just like the GT40 did at Lemans (with the same 427 Ford engine)

  • @Bag0fRats dude im not talking about that scene, im talking about the scene in where the cobra's driver asked "where's franco now?" and after he said that you see the shot where the cobra had a train length on him and the daytona DID PLAY FETCH ON THE COBRA! Now I do agree after they got out of the basin the cobra did pull away from the daytona. watch 3:17-3:30 and you will see what i mean.

  • @daltex81 then I misunderstood you. I live in southern Cali and dont like all the Ferraris here; nice cars, but a little overrated

  • damn those old cobra's were fast! at 3:30 the ferrari blows by the cobra, cobra gets on it and runs it down, gotta love it!

  • Friggin 427 Cobra ate that Ferrari for lunch

  • @Bag0fRats the cobra ate the ferrari like a bagofrats LOL

  • This looked like a real race , not some edited crap you get now a days in race scenes

  • Okay, second gear. Move, move, move........Yahooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • at 3:43 when they leave the aqueduct, and turn left on to the straight away, the cobra crushes the ferrari in acceleration. buh bye!

  • Nice to see the snake and the stallion still battling it out... albeit badly

  • I remember when we first got cable in the late seventies. We watched this movie about ten times in three days.

  • GO COBRA!

  • The 289 Cobra was an all English car. The 427 Cobra was completely redesigned to hold the new big block 427 engine. The car was widened 6 inches for wider tires and a new 4 inch diameter steel tube frame was built to hold it all together. They made 51 big blocks in 1965 and a total of 356 cars ending on December 27th 1967. I also had the pleasure of meeting Carroll Shelby back in 1980 at a car show. Good times.

  • I remember when this movie hit the big screen when it was released. Sad to think a lot of the cast are dead now. Almost half of them.

  • I wonder. Is this the same river bottom that they filmed the Eleanor chase scene from the 2000 Gone in 60 Seconds in?

I totally love this movie. I grew up watching it on an old VHS recorded off HBO and as soon as I saw it on DVD I bought it. Gumball was one of those movies you could tell the actors had a blast making and really had fun being part of. The 70s and 80s were definitely the era for quality car films and movies in general. These movies are epic conpared to most of what's on today.

  • @crazeedriver2005 I dont know about the 2000 Gone in 60 Seconds, but it was used in the the terminator.2. T-2

  • @crazeedriver2005 yes it is the same river from terminator 2 and gone in 60 seconds

  • @calvinnn1 and the movie greese, lol

  • @crazeedriver2005 this is the same river used for the newer 60 seconds movie. in fact the blue shelby enters the river in the same spot as elenor does 10-20 secs in. the ferrari enters a bit north. they uesd so many spots in this movie

  • I've had this movie on VHS( & now DVD) for quite some time(since the mid 80's) and most of the scenes are filmed in California, only the opening sequence and close ups of Manhattan are filmed in New York(obviously). Looking back, of course it seems terrifying to see these two(nowadays) million dollar cars pit through such torture in front of the camera, but back then they were just sports cars that could be purchased like a late model Corvette or Porsche today.

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!

  • both are the only two cars that id ever get in convertible/open top

  • cobra!!

  • That Cobra is soooo Bad Ass

  • dude!!!!!! when they got on the road that Cobra pulled so hard! love this movie, Italian handling versus American muscle. Ferrari and Ford had such a great rivalry back in the day. Thank you for posting this.

  • @crv26 The Cobra was actually an English car; with a Ford engine, thats it.

  • @CurtisHalfHalf i would agree but disagree...when it was the 289 AC it was completely a British chassis...i may be wrong but wasn't it completely revamped for the shelby 427...but good point on your part, anyways..

  • @crv26 The body was expanded outward to accomodate the bigger engine, that's when the fender flares really bulged out, easiest way to tell the difference is the front grill. The AC Cobras had a narrow grill, almost like an XKE Jag, the Shelby's had a much bigger one

  • @CurtisHalfHalf actually, i must clarify: when i said ford vs. ferrari, thus included, the GT40's (all marks) and the daytona...the whole rivalry..: )

  • @crv26 Youre right man..no big deal

  • please name of the song? :)

  • Probably my favorite scene in the entire film.

  • @radioactivekaraoke totally agree bro

  • at the end of this, i still love the pull the cobra gets on the daytona when they come out of the 'river' and get on the street.

  • Quality!!!

  • The end when they're exiting the river...the Cobra V-8 and the Ferrari V-12 together racing through the gears is better than Pavarotti...

  • fantastic movie and a fantastic scene, I first watched it when i was about 14, I've wanted a Cobra since.

  • first saw this when i was 7 it was my introduction to cars that blow your ears off now a mechanic and 27 still a fan

  • ohh the L.A river before it got mucked with grafitti.. i know all the scenes of the river, directon and locations. same parts as the "grease" thunder alley race.. it look like crap now..

  • @socalltd can you still actually go drive in there anymore?

  • @paulloots Oh no. . the L.A river changed from those days.. portions were re-made for a natural habitat. the center is like a trapiziod about knee deep. water stays there as you can see in the clip, but now, water, weeds, trash and graffiti everywhere, dirty. look up the L.A. river on YT to see what i mean.. it was never leagal to drive in there, there are entry points to drive into the bed.. we did that and rode our bikes back in the 80's.. we parked under bridges to hide the wagon..

  • ah the Ferrari 365 GTB what a car!

I love this film, in fact I love it so much my friends and I do the same thing every year! No one knows exactly where or when until the day before (except me) I just tell them a 2 week period it will be in, then send them the sign! this year it is in August! check it out on my channel!

  • Id take the Cobra Anyday and by ANYDAY i mean it well funny thing is my dad owns a original 427 Cobra too past down from his dad to him i love Driving and riding in it. And smoking the shit out of those rice boys.

  • @68428cobrajet Ive never driven a Cobra 427, but I'm told you have to friggin expert to handle one because of the power.

  • title of the movie?

  • gumball rally

  • Great film! Great cars! No story, Who could ask for anything more! A gearhead's classic!

  • now i'm gonna have to get out the VHS, someones gotta upload this whole movie

  • Best car movie I ever saw. I take the Cobra, and you?

  • @Phantom713Hawk .I think the movie was a take on the the Ferrari vs, Ford compitition inthe late 60's,when Carol Shebly beat Ferrari at its own game with a 1-2-3 win at LeMans, thats why the cobra won in the movie,But that Ferrari Daytona was the s#^* back in its day.cost new in 1971:$27,000 cost today,im concourous condition: over 1.5 million dollars. That Cobra rocks to at a recent cost some where near a million dollars for an original 427

  • @Phantom713Hawk ok, I'll take and prefer Ferrari, so no worries :), the Ferrari soud is unbelievably, what a hell, the whole car is unbelievably, specially the sound of that masterpiece called Ferrari V12

  • great movie!!!!

  • Great clip... I love this movie. Thanks

  • damn those cobras sure roar

  • They both sound awesome! The Daytone has it in the top-end, but the power-weight ratio in the low-end definitely gives the advantage to the Cobra.

  • The Gumball Rally was the best of these movies. I would love to see the whole movie again.

In the Cobra vs Daytona, the Ferrari is a great sports car. The Cobra is simple high performance. I really like the Cobra. Its like a two seat rocket!

  • @Greg9942 Years ago I snagged a copy on eBay for about $6. It was double sided, one side with Gumball Rally, and the other with Cannon Ball Run II. GR was great but the sound on CBR was so muted it wasn't worth watching.

  • @Greg9942 its on netflix now

  • 3:01 i give anything to be standing between them & hear the roar!!!

  • i saw that movie years ago and that was my favuorite bit of it

  • Mine too, this and the start of the race when they roar through New York City at 5AM, and it's like they're the only cars on the streets

  • a great movie and a lot of fun!

  • BelayaArmiyaForever so what, these cars were driven hard, as they should be. This is great to see!

  • RIP Tim Mcintire.

  • Back in 1976 these werent replicas. Hope they didnt total these things !

  • The origional Cobras had aluminium bodies. The dents popped out easy.

  • Still sucks to see them chewed up like that. In the beginning seconds of this clip you can see the Cobra nose is mangled. Hollywood has no respect for the art of the car. They trash them simply as props

  • No matter how old i get! I will never get over helluvas cars!!!

  • and now both the cars are covered in shit water, AHAHAHAHA

  • This should be how the new F & F should be, big car chase with funny music to make it less serious. This was brill!

  • The first time I saw this movie as a kid, I rooted for the Ferrari the whole time because I thought it was the best looking car of them all, and because Franco (played by Raul Julia) was so good at getting girls.

  • Not a Dino, Daytona. Dino was small, had a mid engine V6 the Daytona was kinda long because it had a front engine V12.

Great movie and a great scene!

  • I went ahead and corrected the title since it was generating so much 'debate'. I know it's a Daytona but I accidentally typed in Dino... my bad

  • what's that song called? i just love it

  • i want to do this one again lets find some times and places to get thjis going again i want the corbra alright i would race it on the street shut down the cops and race for money lets get this on alright!

  • that's a dino? Thought they only made the dino in a coupe. Also that looks a hell of a lot like a Daytona Spider. 68?

  • It's a 1972 Daytona Spider. I have an article from Motor Trend with both the Cobra and the Daytona from the movie running down the LA river basin in 2006. I can't believe they would take such nice a valuable cars in that mud and water! Cool race though. Hearing both of those engines run is like music to my ears! I saw a red 1972 Daytona Spider sell for $1.5 million on tv.

  • Chuck Bail (the movie's producer / director) per Motor Trend in 1986 wrecked one Daytona Spider then bought another for $35k in Scottsdale, AZ.

  • The Ferrari daytona is ferraris most expensive car in history

  • Topped out at over 2 million, but the Ferrari 275GT, I think, recently auctioned for over 12 million. Still, the Daytona's my favorite. She whistles sweet!

  • What I mean is for the time the daytona was ferraris most expensive car. Its prtty rare because I think a lot of people thought the miura is better. I love the miura, but the daytona is much better in my opinion.

  • Sorry, faulty timeline on my part. I agree the Daytona is better, and more solid; particularly, at high speeds. Remember as Franco best said it:: "She's a happy!"

    R.I.P. - R.J.

  • thats because you can watch daytona from the stands. the gumball 3000 is the best because the only way to participate is to race.

  • Daytona spider today, £700,000 to £900,000.

  • put one serious smile on my face

  • F'n wicked race!!

  • Saw that Daytona Spyder at a Concours D'Elegance (circa 1982). It fetched a cool $100,000 at an auction. Daytona Spyders were topping 2 million dollars shortly after Enzo passed in 1988.

  • And that's the way it should be no cops and flat out two of the fastest steet cars going at it head to head now we need to do this everyday put the ci\ops in there place once and for all!

  • this IMO one of the best race movies that has been made, I like the Cannonball Run but the Gumball Rally tops them

  • agree 100%

  • I like when the Ferrari accelerates. It sounds really cool and I think the Ferrari in the movie has a V8 engine, V12s didn't really exist much back then I believe. I wish to meet Michael Sarrazin someday.

  • The Ferrari had a V-12. I have a magazine that has it and the Cobra from the movie together again in the LA river where they filmed this scene. The engine is a 4.4 liter 365 V-12. V-12 Ferrari's were built until the mid 70's. This car show here is a 1972.

  • you could see the engine when they were tunning the cars in the garage at the begining

    v-12 carbs everywhere:)

  • All the Daytona's had V-12's, and it was Ferrari's last front engined car until a few years ago.

  • cobra all the way

  • its a ferrari,365,gt,b4 daytona spyder a vintige super car idont like the car but love the sound.

  • a 365 GTS "Daytona" indeed

  • yep...daytona...or daytona spider would also be correct.

  • I LOVE that scene!

And I don't believe that is a Dino, I think its a Daytona

  • 1972 Daytona Spider. It's now owned by the Peterson Automotive Museum.

  • Hard to imagine the car being "the shame" when named for Enzo's son ... it just happened to be a small "intro" car ... piccolo.

  • jesus christ it's a daytona cabrio

dino is the shame of ferrari

  • The Dino and Daytona were built during the same time period. The Daytona had a longer frame and stronger suspenison to accomidate the 4.4 liter 365 hp V-12. The Dino was smaller and used a 195 hp V6. Both were completely different cars. After both cars ceased production came the 308 series. The 308 and 328 used modified versions of the Dino platform.

  • I have a magazine article that features those 2 cars. America vs Italy. Cobra is faster in a straight line, but the Ferrari handles better.

  • Yep! his right, that is a Ferrari Daytona Spyder. To think that those cars today are priceless!!

  • I had an article from April(?) 1976 Popular Mechanic/Science called "Filming the Gumball Rally". They borrowed many of these cars from collectors to make the film. They totalled one Daytona and had to buy a replacement...for $75,000! That was a LOT back THEN!

  • The director of the movie said he paid for the extra Ferrari with his own money. He regrets not keeping it now. He had no idea what those were going to be worth today. I would of kept it! My article is from a 2006 issue of Motor Trend Classic. Even features the Delorean DMC-12! Love it!

  • i read the mercedes belonged to the director, and the old guys blew it apart. that's the smoke in the scene when they leave new york.

  • Thats true

  • at 2:28, did the daytona hit the deep part of the culvert? i'm wondering if that's where it was totalled

  • i was thinking about it, when i saw whole movie on a video :) i think so

  • Personally I wondered if they used different cars, on and off, in the whole scene. Check out the grille of the Cobra at the beginning. It octagonal (?) and missing a drive light, later it's oval with both drive lights. Same thing with the Ferrari at 1:55... One drive light, later two *hmmm*

  • Two Cobras and two Daytonas were used in the film. They were all genuine, too: There were no replicas of these cars produced in 1976.

The two Cobras used were chassis numbers CSX3255 and CSX3243. Both of these cars are restored today.

The Daytonas were chassis 14829 (currently at the Peterson museum) and 16467 (wrecked in production, rebuilt, reused and wrecked again permanently in the film "A Star is Born").

  • If memory serves correct, I remember hearing somewhere, that the cobra was damaged at some point in the filming, and they didn't have time to fix it correctly, so they boged with fiberglass and continued. This is why the cobra looks different.

  • The Ferrari in the movie is not a Dino, but a Daytona 365 GTB.

  • Yep you're right... I have a tendency to refer to the Daytona as the Dino, don't ask me why since they had the 'kit' version on Miami Vice for so many years!

  • Great TV show! Loved the Daytona on it!

  • The Daytona if you here it pull out of the garage in the beginning of the race and once it leaved the LA river, sounds like the "Coyote" from Hardcastle and McCormick. Recycled sound effects but still a damn good engine sound.
