Yeah! Students really are the difference maker. Even on bad days, you can't help but smile when they're around. I also starting doing the "letter exchanging" thing with my kids. It's going great so far.
Dude she sounds like an amazing student. I recently started working in Wakayama at a few different middle schools as an ALT and one of my students already gave me a friendship bracelet. It was so sweet of her, and it was only my 5th day there.
Stay strong in America man! We'll do something awesome when you come back here :)
Thanks for sharing that piece of private post (mail?). It's very touching because it's so... what's the word... idealistic, yes, idealistic. Wanting to be a teacher for disabled kids... that's a big load of responsibility she's aiming at. I'm impressed. It's good to know where to go with one's life. I hope she makes it. I'm too gloomy a realist to be idealistic or optimistic about the world, so I wish her all the best.
It's relationships like that which, if I'm accepted into JET, I hope to make. You're an outstanding spokesperson for the program Jason - I'm sure I'm not the only person to be inspired by the friendships you've made with your students.
The whole idea of getting in to the JET program for me is so exciting. I really just want to get to Japan and experience the culture but this video made me realize that if I'm a good enough teacher that even the job will be wonderful.
Japanese rarely talk about their dreams. Part of the reason is that they believe that more they believe inside themselves, the more dreams come true. They often quit their favorite things till the day comes.
Maybe not writing a letter to you is part of her dream campaign.
I had tears in my eyes when I heard the letter. Teaching is truly a highly rewarding career, and I'm glad that you and I (and all the other dedicated teachers out there) are in this field.
Best of luck with sorting things out in the States. Are you still experiencing reverse culture shock? I hope that next week (or should I say this week) would be kinder to you. Take care.
I noticed something interesting in her letter. You know how she said "I don't have interesting story, et cetera"? I think she picked that up from speaking and listening to you. Do you realize how often you say that word in your conversation/vlog? (Seven times in this video, BTW.) Poor analogy, I know, but kids are like parrots when it comes to learning a foreign language. If you have a pet phrase or word that you use repeatedly, they'll sure to pick it up and start saying it themselves...
haha - well, I certainly have met students whose ALT was Australian or British and they would say things like "rubbish" or even have slight accents when they spoke English, so I guess it can rub off.
That is super sweet! I hope to touch some kids life in that way! After my first day of teaching my heart was bursting! Although the students weren't motivated in class they were very eager to talk to me out of class. I hope to bring that eagerness to class by speaking to them out of class. It really is great how much you touched some of your kids lives! I hope this week is better for you!
You know, if you make me cry ONE MORE TIME, I swear...
Because I'm such a mess right now after listening to that amazing letter. Words simply escape me, too. You should be very proud of her, but more importantly, proud of yourself. You've always said that you liked teaching and that you felt you were good at it. Thanks for the proof. : )
I truly believe there's a reason why the letter got to you when it did. I think you were meant to get that letter on that particular day and no other.
That right thier is why I want to be a JET. When I do become one I hope I'll been as good as you and have students like Kaori to let me know that I have made a difference. Thank you Jason for the Vlog
I'm sorry you have had such a terrible week but I'm glad that letter lifted your spirits.
You know, I have to say, I've only been casually considering applying for Jet but when I hear you talk about things like this I start to lean more and more toward making the decision to apply to Jet after graduation.
Thank you for the wonderful video and giving us all a glimpse of the intrinsic value that comes with being a Jet and a teacher.
Oh, she likes Bleach. You can watch the cartoon on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network.
You're so lucky, Jason! I was venturing into the teaching field (here in the States), but I noticed that many teachers just go home after the last bell rings. Having people like Karoi in school won't just put faith back in students, but in people as well. Even now I realize I wasn't the most cooperative student that I could have been, not just for myself, but for others as well.
Funny engrish, sounds like being a teacher in Japan is alot of fun and is really rewarding!
Ive thought about becoming a wood/metal shop teacher but i dunno. Kids here arent as polite and stuff as the japanese seem to be. Alot of people think that being a teacher is lousy job. Its not very well paid either
Thats a very touching letter. :)
