Roasting Coffee with a TurboCrazy

Hi there, did you replace the plastic shaft? I put in a metal one but am trying to remove the slop as easily as possible. As it is, with bigger batches the motor keeps reversing. Thanks for any tips! Have you modded the stirring arms? Do you change your roast temp at all?

@dlygrind I've also replaced the plastic shaft. There is a little play, but not too much.

I have not modified the stirring arms. The motor does reverse from time to time, but the agitation hasn't been significantly affected, so I don't worry about it much.

I do change the roasting temp. I try to match the temp to the profile I'm going for for whatever coffee it is that I'm roasting.

Cool, I've been hitting first crack around 10 minutes and second crack at 15-20 depending on the weather and my profile. What's the biggest batch you've roasted so far?

@dlygrind The time has been pretty close to the same for me. Sometimes 8min. to first crack (depending on a lot of variables). I used to roast green coffee DOWN to 16oz. I think those were 19oz. batches. I don't remember, but I don't do it anymore. Bigger is not necessarily better.

I have a drum that I use with a counter top rotisserie oven. A real PIA getting the hot drum out and transferring the coffee for cooling- had to get welding gloves. But all worth it.

Been planning to build a drum roaster using a gas bbq.

Home roasting is great!
