I had no idea that a trite "reality" show chose to glamorize/sexualize violence toward women.
I love your power point presentation. Your use of statistics makes a profound statement!
It is easy for some to dismiss your response as overly dramatic, but as the member of a family where domestic violence against women (my mom, my sis, myself) had occurred for at least 10 years, I find comfort knowing that someone is working to rise up against anything that entices, condones, or promotes DV!!!!
yea im totaly agaist violence and i dont even like this show-in fact i hate it- but dont u think that that by posting this that ur being over dramatic
this is true. if they were raising awareness of violence against women then they should have said that on the show. they didnt. they made it so the models murdered each other. =[
Oh yeah, just the thought of a battered women just turns me on, its sooooo sexy *sarcasm*
C'mon, they are in no way promoting the idea of abusing women as sexy or ok in any way. If you just watch the episode you'd know that. And if anyone finds this sexy or ok, they already had issues to begin with. So stop bugging about this, its just a dark photo shoot. Geez, next your going to say the photo shoot in Africa portraying animals promotes bestiality, lmao.
Ok, so I'm reading some of these comments, and the main argument seems to be that this subject matter is fine "because the models killed each other, they weren't killed by men, dummy!" (With more insults and spelling/grammatical errors.) So let me get this straight: it's ok to portray violence against women as long as that violence also perpetuates the stereotype of female jealousy of another female's beauty or success? Whatever. America disgusts me.
i really don't think that the producers of the show think that violence is a good thing. it was a dark photo shoot and the theme of it was not abuse or battery, it was a non sense shoot about the models killing eachother in order to be on top. Tyra is an impowering woman who obviously does not support wommen violence. seriously. your taking this out of proportion. it was a photo shoot!!!
Fully agree! Dead beauty is found throughout art and literature - it is the stark contrast between beautiful life and ugly death. Trying to attach a sort of ridiculous political meaning to it would be like saying "William Shakespeare wants YOU to enjoy the murdering of families or Herman Melville wants YOU to hunt whales!" Oh, all the while posting horrifying statistics of murdered families or butchered whales. Ridiculous!
You're absolutely right. They are -trying- to raise awareness on violence against women, which is noble, but they are sexualizing it by putting these women in submissive or "tempting" positions, then dressing them in clothes that are generally used for sexual advertising, such as slips, "spaghetti straps" and high heels. These aren't the kinds of positions or facial expressions one holds when beaten. And the image of a true victim is terrifying and heartbreaking... not glamorous.
this shoot has absolutely nothing to do with rape or sexual abuse, its the jealousy of the other models and them killing each other off to win the contest! did you even watch the episode?!! also, who cares how many women are beaten around etc a year, its gonna happen anyway, yet it happens to men as much if not more yet we dont fucking bitch about it every 5 seconds. next time you're on your bleeds, try to boycott a show thats less inspirational like Loose Women or something, cunt!
and that the show is designed to be very tough on the contestants, and push boundaries, but also that images like these could be used for good purpose, such as to raise awareness of the statistics of women that suffer at the hands of those they are in intimate relationships with, and to try to help such women. Obviously the shoot was not used in any such context in the show, but there are acceptable reasons why a shoot like this might take place in the actual modeling world.
i do agree that this photo shoot was not handled as sensitively as it should have been, but it is important to bear in mind, not only that these photos were used as a mirror to the harsh reality of the modeling world...
its disgusting to portray and woman in a intimidating and vulnerable way. The statistics which are in few cases a result of promoting and depicting violence and hatred towards women. Its sad that they even show people in that way and if it is art (which is meant to be enjoyed or provoke emotion)its could be said to be on the verge of possessing a demonic quality. which is not sexy.
What about a show where they'd cast male models as dead and mutilated soldiers in Iraq, and told them to look sexy and desirable with their guts out and heads smashed in? Would it be art? Would it be OK?
More to the point, would that happen? Creating a hypothetical situation of "reverse sexism" is easy, but show me a couple instances of this! We see pictures of bruised/dead but sexy women daily, I cannot recall the last time I saw a similar picture with a male model.
I agree with the message of your video, but I doubt that the episode would actually provoke a man watching to abuse his wife. Then again, maybe I just don't know. Also, as aforesaid in other posts, the models were supposed to be killing each other because of jealousy, and the point of the shoot was for the models to stand out and be able to breathe life into any types of photos. Domestic violence is not sexy, though.
well those statistics were going on before the photoshoot and the theme if you lsitened carefully to the oprogramma instead of being judgmental was that they had been killed by each other ie model jealousy. Tyra wouldn't have been that silly honestly.
First off, you seem a little bit obsessed with this photo shoot. You're getting mad over a picture that was only supposed to shown on the show, didn't you notice they didn't place them on the website? You actually went searching for them (obsessed!) You because tripping over a meaningless picture, which is supposed to show how cuthroat (no pun) the modeling world can become. It's a picture, there's nothing behind it, except for some laminated paper.
I agree that this is incredibly disturbing. I can't believe that anyone thought this would be a good idea, much less that the network aired it. Anyone who is a surviving victim of violent crime would need therapy after viewing this garbage. Anyone who's lost someone to a violent crime would be disturbed by this as well. Its disgusting, disturbing, sad and enraging all at the same time.

and if you have watched this episode, clearly they dont use that concept of "violence against women" more like "envy" actually, they make it looked like these models got so envied by another model, for example, whitney (girl in white dress) was stabbed by the girls cause they got so envied by her boobs and they wanna see if its real.. you got my point?
so please stop applying every issues you got to simple things like this.. and just think about this, who in the hell would actually try to use a tv show (a good one like ANTM) to spread violence? well, if someone does that he is hella crazy...

The "Public Service Announcement," is primarily about domestic violence, yet none of these photos shows anyone beating up or killing anyone else, so who is exploiting what in this case? To take "fashion shots" out of context for your own agenda is as equally reprehensible as to come up with such a concept in the first place. Yeah, I know the photo shoot wasn't about domestic violence. It was about murder. The point is, when so many women are being beaten and raped every single day, it's irresponsible and wrong to present violence against women as sexy. And it's especially reprehensible because executive producer Tyra Banks is trying to build an image on female empowerment.

Sometimes a model has to play a dead woman in a show, or do an incredibly dramatic photoshoot for things LIKE ads against domestic violence. Just because they were taking images of something that is wrong, does not mean that they are for it. Sometimes you have to take images of a thing you find morally wrong in order to show that you are against it. You're taking a few images way out of context.
Also, the pictures on ANTM are art. Photography IS a proper form of art, and they spend a good deal of time critiquing balance, colour, and other aspects of the artistic world.
I'm not sure where you're living, but I can't remember the last time I saw an anti-domestic violence advertisement. And I'm pretty sure that if I ever saw one, it didn't feature sexified young women acting all sexy-dead in their expensive lingerie.
The point that you seem to be missing is the connection being made here between violence and sex. The photos are contrived in such a way as to equate hideous brutality with fu*kability. These pictures are glorifying violence, and sexualizing violence. As to the artistic merit, well, it's debatable. Technical merits perhaps, but as for adding anything meaningful to our culture - not so much. These pictures only serve to perpetuate the status quo; which is not the function of art.
Yes, models do have to play dead women periodically. But it's very rare that it has to be this glorified. Yes it is art. But think of all the rapists and killers who now can turn on America's Next Top Model and get a high from watching these girls.
Plus the girls got feedback from the judges saying "Sexy" and "Great"
If these photos were being used for an anti violence ad, one bruise would have been enough. But they're not, they're being used for a reality TV show.
stop being so damn anal, its out there and you know it. you also have to see that it is art, and art is suppose to provoke you. If you are provoked with this, it worked. You thought about it. the fact that they used this was probably one of the smartest things they have ever done on this braindead show.
What is WRONG with the producers of this tv program? I hope all the women in North America protest this portrayal of violence as "fashion" and "sexy".
What is WRONG with the producers of that tv show? I hope women all over North America have the brains to protest ... and also the men who support women, too!
All my friends are females and we gather each week to watch Top model and they all loved the idea of the photoshoot. It's all in good fun, and we all though the shots ended up cool.
This is disgusting! Don't we have enough real violence in the world? Why would anybody want to flaunt it and think it's sexy unless your a sick bastard yourself? Your not doing a favor for anybody who has actually seen or felt violence like this. It's easy for people who don't have any idea about it to think it's great but what about the people who have lived it or barely survived it?
Thank you for posting this. I watched this episode of ANTM and I was a little disturbed by the theme of the photoshoot. I really didn't understand why anyone would use violence as a theme for a high fashion spread. It came across as ignorant and insensitive.
