In my (humble) opinion, this aria "belongs" to Anne Sofie von Otter. It is absolutely unique by the choice of the (very) slow tempo and her devastatingly intense sotto voce ...
I know (and own) this record since it was released (1997, I believe) and this aria is one of the most extraordinary things ever recorded. No other performance I know comes even close ...
The very first time I heard this wonderful aria I knew that it is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. It is still hard to keep my eyes dry. Absolutely perfect
Who is the conductor? I am enchanced! Not with the voice, which is good, interprets the words (too much vibrato) but by the fact that finally someone put THAT solo out :D
Heavenly! You can hear the anger and anguish in Anne Sofie's voice evoking the feeling of a betrayed prince. This must be one of the most beatiful and moving arias ever composed and sung. In the midst of serious discussions about politics at dinner with guests, there is pristine silence when this aria is played on the stereo, marvelling at von Otter's singing. Unequalled!
Such a pitty that this Opera is not more often performed. I went to Antwerp and Munich to see it in the last 5 years. This aria is indeed the most beautiful aria ever written and sung in the most moving way by Anne Sophie. Can't stop crying
Von Otter performed the opera for 3 months at the Paris Opera Garnier sometime in the late 90s. I have the complete (3) CDS of this piece. And we have tickets to see Ariodante on May 30 at the Drottningholms Slott Theater, the oldest performing opera house, located in the outskirt of Stockholm.
Better call the Theatre first and see if there are tickets left. The number is 08-6608225, Stockholm, Sweden. von otter though will not perform in this opera this time. Other opera singers.
hello ! thank you for sending it! I like Handel and Anne Sophie, and it's a very beautiful video, wonderful pictures, thanks ! I haven't heard Andreas sing this air, I'll try to find it !
This aria is heart-breakingly beautiful. Sopranist Aris Christofellis recorded this, but a falsetto voice can be rahter hard. David Daniels recorded this also, but his voice warbles more than I'd like. This recording is quite nice, even with the clearly feminine timbre and vibratto. I have not heard Andreas Scholl sing this.
Thank you for alerting me to that fact. I already have more Jaroussky CD music on order.
Paul Esswood (a countertenor best known from the previous generation) would have an excellent voice for this aria, fuller than Jaroussky or Scholl but without the warble of Daniels.

Será a mesma?
Obrigado e parabéns pelo canal!

I'm wondering if Marc Minkowski is maestro here. Just heard a recording very much like this, a few days ago on Radio France/Vivace.

Indeed it is Minkowski. The performance is unbelievably beautiful.

Scherza infida in grembo al drudo.
Io tradito a morte in braccio
Per tua colpa ora men vo.
Ma a spezzar l'indegno laccio,
Ombra mesta, e spirto ignudo,
Per tua pena io tornerò.
