I don't get it... why would the fact his sister was a boy be such a shock for Brian? As the mother says, "she" was acting like a boy before the reveal. Could the fact "she" was actually a he really be such a shock that would drive into suicide someone, whose genitalia wasn't cut off instead of David, who was obviously more affected by this, because he was affected both psychologically and physically and was driven into suicide following the depression suffered because of his brother's death?

Just to clear it up. Your sex identity is dependant on which genitals you have. Your gender identity is what you feel you are. SO for Brenda's (David) case, He felt like a male, not female. They didn't know what to do in the situation, and were tricked by some crazy psychologist who just wanted something to prove his crack pot theories, but I feel like they should have thought it through more thoroughly

In this case we are talking about 1950s There was nowhere near the access to immediate information like today. The doctor had all the medical training. As a young parent of 16 to 20 you don't know any better than what the doctor says, in fact there are people walking around in their 70s today that will take a million meds because their quack medical Dr told them to. They were both absolutely gorgeous as kids! As adults even though David still was good looking you can see I think the stress of it all had taken its toll on him and on his brother too. They were victims and I feel terribly sorry for them and their parents who now live on without them.

I think they may have been 'stupid' but they were well-meaning and like David said they only tried to do what was best for him at the time.

The mother's speach is affected by a series of strokes. David and Brian's parents are very bright and informed people, they had the smarts to seek out treatment at the best North American hospital by a leader in his field. It's not their fault that the doctor in question had a God complex and was as manipulative as the day is long in pushing his pet theory to fruition.

They were also smart enough to discontinue therapy when they saw the adverse effect that it was having.
