Man these videos make me want to play golf. I've never really played golf, but it seems so relaxing. I haven't been to a golf course since I was a kid being a bag boy. I actually got my two front teeth knocked out and part of my skull broken from playing golf in my back yard with brothers when I was young by getting hit in the mouth by a chipped golf ball lol.
1-a 1 iron was next to impossible to hit. Like been said and it's so true, "God can't hit a 1 iron but Jack can."
2- hitting it into a 30+ mile an hour wind.
3- US open hanging in the balance.
4- add 3 together plus hitting the pin and almost a hole in 1.
I'd like to see Tiger Wood even try and hit a 1 iron:P He can't even hit a drive straight with the earth size heads and 40 mile sweet shots that just about force you to hit it straight.
@as435943 hitting an iron and a wood is like apples and oranges. Tiger is one of the best ball strikers of all time. I'm sure he would not have an issue with a 1 iron at all. he was the best iron player on tour for over a decade. what a ridiculous comment on your part.
#3 is the #1 luckiest shot in history, not the greatest. Great shot to get it close, lucky to get it in. 99 more attempts at that and not 1 goes in, but it was just in the cards that day.
@jamminjeff8566 That's the same with every other one of these shots... none of these guys could make their same shot again. #3 needed spin and the break, so did #2. They all took the same amount of skill and luck.
Tom Watson's shot was no doubt the all time great shot, because against Jack Nicklaus, the pressure, oh my God it could not have been better.Tom i love you
mize's chip is the greatest shot in the history of the game imo. the greens at the masters back then were so baked, it was like putting on ice. gary mccord referred to them as bikini wax and hasn't been allowed back since that comment. hard to make a top 10 but one that comes to mind- called it 10A. ha. zinger's bunker shot the 93 memorial. the late great payne stewart on the green in 3 a shot ahead. then misses the putt to lose by one.
Would have been nice to include some more shots from that other area outside America - you know, the world? Plenty of geat shots in Europe and other places - what about Tom Watson's shot to the final hole at Turnberry (the Duel in the Sun)? He and Nicklaus duking it out playing flawless golf, Tom hits a long iron to about 3 feet on the last hole, then Nicklaus makes a 35-foot putt to share the lead. Those two shots alone would have to be in my top-10 list.
If someone played hole-in-one on the 18th hole and win the whole tournament by this shot, that would top the Tiger's shot. But right now there is only one winner, the perfection in its purest form, timing is the one, shot almost in right angle. The only thing missing is the Nike logo to appear when the ball stopped.
damn right about the tiger shot.. had that been in the movie the director would have been chewed up for making it over the top and oh gimme a break, that can never happen in a real life shenanigans.
As a golfer myself off a 2 handicap, I would have to say Nicklaus's 1-iron to inches was the best shot. Tiger's chip looked better/harder than what it was. All he had to do was place it up on the green and let it collect towards the hole - it's not as difficult as it looks.
Yeah but the thing that made toms shot number one was the fact that he HAD to make it. If he didn't make it we might be looking at Nicklaus with 5 Opens. So the pressure and clutch of the shot put it above Tigers. Although Tigers shot is a shot God couldn't even pull off haha
I'm the biggest Tiger hater on the planet, but his chip on #16, that's the greatest shot in golf history and I cannot imagine anything topping that. That was a much more difficult shot to hole than Watson's at Pebble, Verne's call is legendary, the shot was much more dramatic due to how much time the shot took, and the fact it stopped for a second on the lip and just fell in. I was 9 at the time and nothing close to a golf fan, but my jaw hit the floor at that I was so amazed.
I can't stand Cheatah but that shot was amazing. He not only made a very tough chip, he actually hit it so that the Nike logo was clearly displayed as the ball hung there for an extra second. Pretty good.
@MrTwigg2 i stood open mouthed as gregs boat pulled into melbourne a few years ago,i didnt think they made private boats so big, trust me mr twigg he didnt do so bad !!!
Watson's lie was impossible. There was pressure, with Nicklaus having the lead, the shot would have gone 50 feet past, and it was just a classic shot and the reaction was great.
Come on, Tiger's shot is the toughest one to judge. Not only he managed to take the ball in the perfect path, he also managed to control the speed perfectly. The two shot selected by ESPN as #2 and #1 are more or less easy to judge (but hard to execute of course) shots whil none of them have a speed control - mind you all three go down the hill and only Tigers shot is slow enough to stop at the hole. That is the best shot ever....
@gounc93 for sure you have no idea what is going on around the world and what you have seen in US, you think is what is happening in the world is! Shame on you...
Soccer is the number one game in teh world! Football is this popular only in US. Rugby is more popular around the world than football. As a fan of both football and rugby, I would prefer rugby. Rugby and soccer are eventful and continuous. In football most of the time players hang around and plays arae very short.
All of these shots are under absurd pressure, so with that part of it fairly even throughout this series, I am disturbed that the single shot a pro would pull off most often, ends up being #1. Other than maybe Tway's bunker shot, I bet most pros, out of the 10 shots, would actually select this short chip with the ball fully exposed if they had 1 chance to execute any of these shots. Sure, it was slippery, but even if he gets down in 2 he's not dead. Nice shot, but in the 6 or 7 range, I think.
great point Bull. I guess ESPN was a little thin on talent when they put that together..............hmmm, was Larry Mize too busy for a little comment on HIS shot? Maury Povich? yes, a true golfing authority on everything Masters
Mize's pitch and run was more impressive than Watson's famous chip-in. Watson had a good lie and was able to land the ball on the green with enough putting surface to work with to have a reasonable chance of making it. Any professional could probably make the Watson shot maybe one time in 50. The Mize shot was like hitting the lottery.

@TheBull06 A producer at ESPN said "Well, we should get 2003 Champion Mike Weir's take on that shot, but more importantly, I wonder what Maury Povich thinks!" Mind-boggling.

Watson's chip from penal rough was hard because equipment in 1982 was still untouched by technology. Woods shot was brilliant, and much of his shot-making is incredible; I think the criteria for the video was these shots led to victories, because a lot of amazing shots have been produced in other situations; eg Seve's 3 wood from a bunker in the 1983 Ryder Cup which landed right next to a difficult pin.
Great video! I think Larry Mize's chip should be No. 1 and Tiger's chip No. 2, with Watson's chip No. 3. Great shot no doubt but the others were more dramatic. I hope ESPN does an updated version & expands it to Top 20 shots (throw in a few outside of Majors, like Craig Parry's eagle hole-out at Doral to win a playoff in 2004). Phil Mickelson's incredible shot from the pine straw at the 2010 Masters would be in for sure, as could either of Tiger's birdies to win the 2008 US Open on one leg!

norman! how many guys have chipped in on him and hit the luckiest shots on him. and the ridiculous awkward goofy celebrations he has to watch from mize and tway
@blotchy67 I agree with you. After all, Watson said he knew he was going to make that short chip, tough as it was. I'm sure that Mize wasn't so confident because it was so much more difficult, and a LOT farther from the hole.
@chilibro your out of your mind over rated. I don't like what he did in his personal life either. This is about the best pro golf shots. I think this one belongs in the top 10
I saw #3 when it happened on tv, im like "there is no way he is gonna make it, its gonna fly 20 feet past the hole." But as it slowly crept closer, it dropped and i was cheering and yelling at my tv LOL
dishearrtened chris demarco? Tiger bogeyed the next two holes and demarco almost chipped in for the win on 18. I will say that the shot itself was one of the most exciting moments in golf history.
@Jayps87 Watson should of chip the shot off the green at the Open on the 18th, rather than 3 putt it. If I was his caddy, I would of yanked that putter out of his hands and handed him the sand wedge! He would of chipped it close or holed hit making par at worst and win the Open like he did at Pebble Beach.
I have been lucky enough to play two of the greatest courses in the world, Pebble and Oak Hill in Rochester NY site of the 2003 PGA. I stood on the exact spot on 17 at Pebble where Watson chipped in and also on the spot Shawn Micheel hit his approach on 18 at Oak Hill. By FAR the tougher of the two shots was the approach on 18 at Oak Hill. He had 17

Mize has gotta be #1..Augusta playoff...impossible chip..Woods is 2nd or 3rd for sure..but that shot by Mize, lucky or not, was perfect

i love how in tigers shot the ball just poses with the NIKE symbol looking at the camera. It´s like the perfect commercial.

tom watson pitching tinto the hole for birdie!!!! what can u say!?.......i can say that that was the greatest shot in a final round!!!!!!!!
shawnwave 1 year ago
Mize's shot should have been #1. I think Mickelson's shot at 13 at Augusta this year will be one of the top ten ever
blotchy67 1 year ago

I vote for Jack's 1 iron being number 1. A 1 iron is tough as hell to hit and t o think that he hit the stick into a 30+mph wind is unGodly.

God I love Tom Watson just such a great guy regardless of his golf game. So likeable it's good to see him get the #1 spot here.
quasiphatpaul 1 year ago
dishearrtened chris demarco? Tiger bogeyed the next two holes and demarco almost chipped in for the win on 18. I will say that the shot itself was one of the most exciting moments in golf history.
jaybou263 1 year ago
Mize's shot was better - ranked #3 -, although Watson's was truly remarkable.

@Jayps87 I had tears in my eyes I was rooting for him so much!

He had 17
