@90lysander So true! R.R. especially looks like a dork, though he's still convincing as a successful ladies' man/predator. As for Edda, she does look fabulous, and I really DK what she meant re that comment--anyone can see that she is tall and regal, with a lovely, noble, soulful face highlighted by striking hazel eyes and a proud, passionate mouth. She remains one of the greatest, most fascinating interpreters of Mozart ever.
Translation: Now you know who tried to rob me of my honor/ Who was the traitor who killed my father/ I beg you to avenge me/ Your heart wants vengeance too! Think of the wound in his poor breast, of the blood-covered ground / Should your righteous fury ever wane!
Text: Or sai chi l'onore/Rapire a me volse/Chi fu il traditore/Che il padre mi tolse! Vendetta ti chiedo/La chiede il tuo cor!/Ramenta la piaga/Del misero seno,/ Rimira di sangue /Coperto il terreno, /Se l'ira in te langue/ D'un giusto furor.
Sorry, of course, I meant Moser singing Donna Anna, NOT Donna Elvira. *Embarrassed* - I should acknowledge that Edda's passionate portrayal of Donna A. also shows the character's grief, along with her fury. E.M. told an interviewer that she had thought of herself as "too ugly" for an actress, so she studied singing instead...Lol
@marywardify Lol indeed. She's not ugly at all! Quite the opposite, in fact. And she's the only one in this movie that really looks good in the period costuming - even Kiri te Kanawa and Ruggero Raimondi, both of them very attractive people, look a trifle ridiculous. Edda, on the other hand, was born to wear that wig! :P
My God!! Simply AMAZING...Previously I was blown away just listening to Edda sing Donna Elvira (minus the accompanying film footage) & acting this scene with her voice. But to see her beautiful, expressive features conveying a daughter's almost animal reaction of shock, outrage, and thirst for vengeance at meeting her father's killer again is a revelation. I absolutely love Edda Moser--her voice and artistry are compelling & totally unique.
I love the way Edda makes this overblow, pretentious, and dare I say farcical libretto seem worthy and weighty. Her voice just blows my balls back and the chick can act. Bravo Edda!
Edda Moser is extremely underrated. She was one of the great Mozart stylists and singing actresses of the 20th century. Except perhaps for Carol Vaness, I've never seen any other soprano get into this aria quite as completely as this. (4:30!) She's almost scary here.
A pity we do not have similar video documentation of her Queen of the Night.
I also love Edda Moser and I'm a fan...her Donna Anna is incredible and I think of her as being a lot better than Carol Vaness, Edda was very passionate and could sing a usually light Mozart role (like the Queen of the Night) and make it into what looks like a very hard to sing diva role....her voice is hard to emulate too...she's one of a kind :)
@tomasburi Thanks for the tips. I've seen the "collage," but it's so poorly put together it's almost not watching. As for Tomowa-Sintow, it's a big voice, for sure, but for me she seems out of place in Mozart.
Maravillosa. otra diosa...

geez, just cuz an opera's funny for a change doesnt make it "overblow, pretentious, and .....farcical"

@Fanfardon And, of course, you are an accurate judge of the worthiness of da Ponte's famous and highly acclaimed libretto. How pretentious.

nclysander: I think Anna Tomowa-Sintow is also very good - at least closer to Edda than any other soprano.
AmericanEvita: Search for "Edda Moser - Interview 1992 - Da capo - Part 1/6" - there is some collage of her performance of the Queen
