The civic is overpriced for its old engine & transmission... it looks pretty plain as well. I got a 2012 mazda3 skyactiv---great handling car and has more horsepower, more torque, more mpg than this civic. It has double overhead cam (dohc), advance direct injection and 6-speed auto w/ manual mode. Civic gives you a single overhead cam (sohc), a 5-speed and no standard all disc brakes and bluetooth unless you get higher trims.
I have a 2002 Toyota Camry SE - My goodness the tail lights looks like the design on my old car? And like someone said, there are some design similarities to the old Dodge Neon? It's a damn shame that the European version of the same car has a much nicer exterior. Also I read that Honda realizes from bad reviews. That there may be a really fast body/facelift from the 2012 Civic. The arrogant designers really screwed this up and know that this will hurt sales!
@pablome your a moron. They are blowing Honda outa the market as of late. Sales are showing it too. Learn about how the auto industry is now a days. Honda's standards have gone down and Hyundai have come way up. I was the biggest Honda fan for years but lately they cant make anything worth a flip to save their lives. Hondas are suffering big time.
@Acc0rd79 Ya ok Hyundai still doesn't have the reputation of being reliable yet and their cars are not that impressive they are still cheap inside. Honda cars are more reliable and better quality. As far as sales goes you do realize there was shortage of inventory while Hyundai still had left over units those making sales for them because they had more inventory, Honda already sold units they had in stock and sold incoming unit as well. So in terms you idiotic comment makes you the moron.
@soyntgo4it You need to do some research sir, their reliability has slipped below many of the companies like Ford/Chevy etc and Hyundai is way above and beyond Honda. Shortage is nothing when it comes to demand, and have cars of the year "Elantra" makes a big difference in sales and has nothing to do with shortage. You really need to do more deep research before you open your mouth. Ill cya in 10 years when Hyundai is out selling honda in every area. thank you.
@Acc0rd79 No I think you need to do more research about what you are saying. Honda is well above Hyundai for reliability. Again Shortage on vehicles makes a big difference on sales. Despite what you say we'll see if you can get 200k out of your Hyundai while a Honda will top 200k with no problems Resale on a Hyundai isn't as good as you think. Honda resale value is way higher. Hyundai is still a disposable vehicle like KIA.They may have looks of a high brand but they are still cheap.
My friend just picked one up today - and let me drive it. I just changed my goal from getting the Corolla to the Civic. I absolutely love this car. The interior is classy and refined, and the drive is very pleasing.
Let's face it, any new 4 cylinder car is going to be a nice ride when you are used to driving an older beater like me. And the nit pick things in these videos, while appreciated, don't really matter in day to day driving to me.
the design of the Hyundai Elantra put this civic into shame. Looks like a Ford...WTF! Honda need a new Lead designer, the last couple Honda models can't compete anymore.
Meh, Gen 9 looks like a Gen 8 but not as good. Sometimes Honda get it right, sometimes they don't, just like the gen 6 looked way better then the gen 7. Waiting for Gen 10
Just bougth one, really clean and smooth. You guys trying to act cool and hip and looks to cars to define you are pathetic, im 25 mexican and a family man, who is starting a non-profit and married to a University of Chicago Professor. Being cool is not driving the sickest car, its buying the most reliable and affordable gas effecient car, it fits my small family and that why I purchase the car.
My wife just got a 2012 Civic LX. IMO it isn't bland at all. I love the interior, and it seems like the new civic drives much smoother than the 2005 I used to have. It handles very well, and I'd be lying if i said i didn't like the gauges and dash. It does appear they are moving away from the smaller, more "driver's car" of the older models. It feels more like luxury than mini sport compact now. And obviously some people don't like that, which is fine.
@qbthething i was thinkin the same thing i love hondas excuse me i love all cars but this if u remove the h emblems could pass 4 a toyota or a hyundai. JMO
@puremaplesyrup22 wow nice. Well, you'll have a car that'll last w/o much maintenance. Congrats . Having been through a couple cars and being 24 yrs old with little money that sounds pretty good. My civic which I purchased 2008 has 180,000k only thing i've really replaced is a starter (junk yard 09' for 50 bucks). Even though I can afford "more" since I have a good job and completed school I'm thinking of getting another. Hate the new body compared to 8th gen looks weak but $ talks.
Truly this is an ugly Civic. I don't know if they are trying to retrofit the Honda Civic 2004 tail lights into this model. The dashboard/console looks terrible. Corolla 2008 looks better than this console.
Is there such thing such as international mafia? They intentionally destroyed Honda Civic 2012 looks to make other higher bidder's win in the global market. I don't know which brand is that. Tell me what you think about this. Be glad to have your inputs. Something like, if you borrow money from the IMF, you can't invent or manufacture cars fueled with H2O. It's like an international crime to invent something which shall permanently destroy the oil industry. So don't invent anything.
people who dont like this car are not getting what its made for and what type of people its targeted for.....and if your complaining about its look well just look at the price and most people who buy it doesnt get it for the looks
All these people putting down the 2012 Civic are Civic haters to begin with. Yeah I agree its not anywhere near revolutionary as the 8th gen Civic, but its a better car, like the reviewer said, its faster, better fuel economy, roomier, and more composed to the limit. The previous gen is already an excellent value for money its amazing they where able to improve on all those areas and maintain virtually the same price, if you don't like it go buy an over priced Focus or a slow gas guzzler Cruze.
@pr9nkaholic A bit of a stretch to say the Civic is ugly. Prius, Fit, Volt, MKT are uglier. Some of those are abominations. The new Civic might turn off more vein drivers (8th gen was a cute car). Its average in the looks dept, but I guess this might be a huge disappointment for some.
@applewarrior Yes, but the Prius, Fit and Volt are not Civic category. The Corolla, Elantra, and Forte are Civic category. Ironically, the latter took design cues off the Civic and produced a winning design.
I had a 95 civic in high school and loved it. The new civic looks like a family sedan!!! Honda squandered a HUGE market with conservative styling. For a short period of time every kid of America thought a Civic was a compact sports car. Not anymore.
Wow motortrend actually did do a smear campaign on this Asian import. But of course they will play heavenly music when they review anything Chevy. How's the board of directors from Chevrolet doing? Did they buy you any vacation beach homes yet motortrend?

That report was based off of 1 guys opinion. One. Plus if you base your decision on what someone else said then you obviously cant think or decide for yourself.
Ok people who keep mentioning the Consumer Reports. First off it was based one 1 guys decision. You cant tell me that has any credibility at all based off of one guys thoughts. Second cars.com does recommend it so instead of reading and believing everything you see why not use your own mind and brain and go test drive one for yourself and come to your own conclusion. Its pretty simple.
@TheBestOfTimes88 "on Monday a preview of the magazine’s September issue contained a bombshell: the 2012 Honda Civic LX sedan scored so poorly during testing that the car did not make the magazine’s (Consumer Reports) Recommended list." (The New York Times)
The two tear Speedometer drew me away. I don't like that organization and I don't like the digital Tachometer because it is not as responsive. Plus I don't need to see the my MPH change every mile.
The rear looks a little too much like a 2003 Camry. So in other words, bland. I'm so surprised how Honda (and Toyota) just don't seem like they care to compete these days. They might make pretty good cars, but damn have they become lackluster.
Hate it or love it, good cars don't need to change. Look at the Porsche Carrera, Aston Martin's.This has evolved, not too much but just right. Honestly the person who buys a regular Civic doesn't want power, they want it to be quiet, reliable, roomy, good on gas and this car does it. And the Si is a lot better, with the more displacement Si owners will start to know what torque is.
IMO it's a better car overall but I'm not sure if it's a better Honda Civic.
Sure you can buy that shit Swiss fake cheese in the grocery store in the ghetto but that same Swiss cheese bought at the town where old tradition still makes it with homemade kind of care and attention is a totally different ball game. From the outside the two types of Swiss cheese look the same but one of them was crafted with more attention and care. From the weight and outer appearance, the average Joe doesn't care.
im A HUGE fan of the 2012 honda civic..i think honda did a great job on everything on the inside and out..def my next car....i love the front of it..and it get's 39 mpg..until u sit in 1 of these dont say anything about it cause it look's GREAT in person...like if u agree...:-)
Sure other cars have more power and sexier styling but I've seen what Honda can do by making the most advanced humanoid robot in the world called ASIMO. If you call that engineering triumph a marketing gimmick, obviously you cant understand intellectual prowess you see it. When was the last time another CAR COMPANY made the most advanced humanoid robot for their marketing campaign? None, because their engineers don't have that kind of talent. Start your hate replies now bitches.
I am mentally challenged so I think motortrend doesn't like Japanese cars very much. Hey motortrend do you know a word called 'implying' or maybe 'insinuating' by any chance? Cause there is nothing wrong with your channel, I just want to tell you that your taste in cars must be like what Justin Beiber likes? Is that a bad thing to say to you or a good thing? See what I mean you fucktards?
I don't know what has gotten into Honda, but this has to be the ugliest generation of Honda Civics. I talked to a lot of Honda owners and they all agreed that this car was probably not designed by Honda. I believe the 2000 Honda Civic was probably the best looking one and one of the best sellers. Honda should go back to its roots.
@stringfellowhawke247 Thank your for saying that!! I think its soo funny how people are saying its so ugly and its too much for a civic, but while im paying for the car, im not spending 50 bucks on gas every week, people have car payments for a BMW and still have to worry about money for gas, if that makes sense lol. I got this car cause ill be saving money and i like the looks of it.
@stringfellowhawke247 HAHA. LOOOL. You make me laugh. Read the news. Consumer Repots kicked the 2012 Honda Civic out of its reccomended list cause the car did so POOR during testing. LOOOOOOOOOL.
Kia Forte Koup is better than this, 5speed automatic with no manual mode and 1.8L 140hp engine vs. 6speed automatic with manual mode and 2.0L 156hp engine, Forte wins.
@tonytsui96 Debating which car is better is almost useless.. All the cars in this segmant shine in one way or another. What you buy comes down to preference.
i own one this car rides great a lot better than some larger vehicles and better than the 11 civic. you just need to test drive it to see. i average 32 to 34 mpg highway and city. the 11 looks great and the 12 adds to that why change perfection. mine has blue tooth which works great. this car rides better than the elantra and to me is not overboard in style.
0:45...WRONG!! The 2012 digital speedometer is not flanked by fuel and temperature gauges. It is flanked by a fuel guage (on the left) and an instant mpg gauge (on the right).
Motortrend should just go back to doing its muscle car videos because clearly Motortrend does not like anything that comes from non-White manufacturers. Its funny watching how Motortrend tries to dance around its prejudice by 'how' (big emphasis on how cars are shown in what kind of light) they show us the cars, its obvious they prefer muscle cars over technical prowess.
Not looking super-sexy like its rivals, but looking good nonetheless. 39 mpg/automatic, 2012 Top Safety Pick, good brakes/handling and reliability... works for me;-)
@stringfellowhawke247 It's true, the Civic seems to be beating the Elantra in MPGs when it comes to real world. The Civic may be expensive, but you're also buying a car with great resale value (Hyundai/Kia/Ford/Chevrolet still have to prove this...) and a proven engine/transmission. Let's see a 2012 Elantra and Civic in 7-8 years with 120k+ on the odo and see which has held up better.
And personally, I find the Elantra ugly! I saw a 2012 Civic EX Coupe in a parking lot the other day...gorgeous!
@TheBoogie24seven yea i would get this over any of the rivals but it does look better than some rivals i mean just look at the corrolla and i hate the focus styling its dumb
@BlackOpsAFG Yeah, you're absolutely right. The more I see this car out on the road the more I see that it's actually a very nice car, sleek maturity. Civics, or Hondas in general seem to age well with time, no matter what. Car and Driver actually had a pretty good compact shoot-out with seven or so cars, Civic earned second place. Not to mention most folks have been getting better fuel economy with the Civic than Elantra, and better steering/suspension too.
i used to think this model was the similar to 8th gem, but when I went to go look at in person and test drive it, I traded in my 8th gen and got this one because it has improved alot. I recommend you go look at it in person. I'm really glad i did!
It actually looks like they took the 8th gen Civic and just combined it with the Chevy Cobalt Lt sedan. People would still go out and buy it though, simply because it has the Honda nameplate.
@mes59 Most people look at buying a car as an investment (and they should because it is) and most people know that buying a Honda is about the best way to make a good investment when buying a car.
I really like the new Civics, I think having the same displacement but making it slightly faster and better fuel economy is awesome. The higher speed stability is incredible for a car in this segment. I really appreciate how the A pillars are not so thick anymore. But for everything that I like about this new Civic, the back end almost kills it, man is it ugly. Honda please do something about the rear! Please!
i honestly did not like this car when i first saw it but i just saw it in person the other day and it looks way better. check it out in person it looks great!
This 9th generation reminds me of the 6th generation Civics (model year 1996-2000) which are my favorites. The 6th generation sedans looks like a BMW mixed with a Infiniti. The front facia was clean and the the hood was a lot longer. Also, the windshield was not hanging over the front tires like a van.
I don't know why people criticize the 9th gen Civic because it looks similar to the 8th gen. Its most comparable competitor, the Toyota Corolla, has looked the same for over a decade!
@SuperHimLove Looks are subjective. I think the Hyundai looks good while the new Civic looks like some old folks commuter car vs the sexy little rocket ship of the previous version. It's a poor man's Accord. And the Elantra has slightly better performance and much better interior. I think you're so defensive LOL because you own a second hand Civic LOL and quickly outfitted it with 'performance upgrades' LOL like pretty red ignition wires LOL coffee can muffler LOL and blacked out windows LOL.
@rokhop Stop pressing the LOL key if you want your arguments to harbor any credibility. (I can only assume by the quantity of LOL's in your post that you have manually set a keyboard shortcut for it). Also, don't make assumptions about the individuals you are arguing with (as in the appearance of his/her car). It is childish, and once again eliminates any credibility that may have been present in your argument.
The tail lights look like those of the first generation Prius (from many years ago)... way to go Honda. I think the last generation Civic looked better... smh
We went with the 2011 Mazda 3. With the exception of the somewhat goofy front end, the car was far superior to the Civic in every single way, with exception of 2-3MPG less by EPA as trade off for a considerably larger engine.
I hope everyone test drives different brands and doesn't buy a Civic just because it's a "Civic". There's cars out there that are just as competitive, and we're happy we found ours.
Everyone I have a 2000 Acura Integra GSR with 168,000 miles. Should I sell my car or trade in for a 2012 Honda civic Si coupe/Sedan ? I want more power I think I should move up to something more. I like Honda's so I'm thinking of getting a new civic. Please let me know what you think ? I'm not sure how long my Acura Integra will last even I take good care of its maintenance yearly. Thanks !
This guy has no passion for cars at all (the speaker). I mean, he is just reading from a list of figures for it. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OLD PEOPLE AT MOTORTREND?!?!
What a disappointment!!!! This car is so bland looking and boring. A corolla actually looks more attractive. The design is so safe while Hyundai, Kia, and Ford continue to step up their game, Honda seems to be stepping down. Honda is resting on it's reliability reputation. The problem there is Hyundai, Kia, and Ford are starting to get with that program too for a lot less.
Hyundai cars look girly. The civic is better looking in person and I'm getting that shit. Ofcourse there is more expensive cars u can get that are better but in its class its still the best.
We choice a 2012 Cruze LT and were very happy with the choice,We liked the Focus and Civic but, liked the Cruze better...

It looks better than the prior model. But, I still don't like that two-tiered dash.
I wish Honda would look at how Audi and BMW do their instrument clusters. There is something they could learn there...

I think its soo funny how people are saying its so ugly and its too much for a civic, but while im paying for the car, im not spending 50 bucks on gas every week, people have car payments for a BMW and still have to worry about money for gas, if that makes sense lol. i own one this car rides great a lot better than some larger vehicles and better than the 11 civic. you just need to test drive it to see. i average 32 to 34 mpg highway and city. the 11 looks great and the 12 adds to that why change perfection. mine has blue tooth which works great. this car rides better than the elantra and to me is not overboard in style.

BlackOpsAFG 6 months ago
@BlackOpsAFG Yeah, you're absolutely right. The more I see this car out on the road the more I see that it's actually a very nice car, sleek maturity. Civics, or Hondas in general seem to age well with time, no matter what. Car and Driver actually had a pretty good compact shoot-out with seven or so cars, Civic earned second place. Not to mention most folks have been getting better fuel economy with the Civic than Elantra, and better steering/suspension too.

xDarKBirD 9 months ago
It actually looks like they took the 8th gen Civic and just combined it with the Chevy Cobalt Lt sedan. People would still go out and buy it though, simply because it has the Honda nameplate.
mes59 9 months ago
@mes59 Most people look at buying a car as an investment (and they should because it is) and most people know that buying a Honda is about the best way to make a good investment when buying a car.
idontcare80 9 months ago 4
I really like the new Civics, I think having the same displacement but making it slightly faster and better fuel economy is awesome. The higher speed stability is incredible for a car in this segment. I really appreciate how the A pillars are not so thick anymore. But for everything that I like about this new Civic, the back end almost kills it, man is it ugly. Honda please do something about the rear! Please!

I think you're so defensive LOL because you own a second hand Civic LOL and quickly outfitted it with 'performance upgrades' LOL like pretty red ignition wires LOL coffee can muffler LOL and blacked out windows LOL.
rokhop 9 months ago
@rokhop Stop pressing the LOL key if you want your arguments to harbor any credibility. (I can only assume by the quantity of LOL's in your post that you have manually set a keyboard shortcut for it). Also, don't make assumptions about the individuals you are arguing with (as in the appearance of his/her car). It is childish, and once again eliminates any credibility that may have been present in your argument.

datpimpinboy 9 months ago

Thanks !

Where is the 6 speed automatic?
Where is the variable valve timing?
Why does the rear look like that of a 1st generation Prius?
Why are the brakes still massively undersized
Tires are a bit wide for optimum mileage 185/65 15 would be nice (see Nissan Versa)
Where are the balance shafts for the engine?
138hp isn't much, how about upgrading to the 2 liter version of the engine when the 6 speed automatic is ready?
Same underperforming headlights...
