Saw the movie. All I can safely tell you is that the main part of the story is set in the late 1950's to early 1960's however - and it's a big however - the story covers a span of around 13.75 Billion years with some of the cast not having been seen for over 65-75 Million years. It pertains to the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, without any reference to Kabbalah in the movie.

At the end of the movie every single person at the cinema was gob-smacked; half because they understood it, the other half because it put their brain through a cheese grater. Pitt, Penn and Chastain did great acting, but they were outclassed by the two boy actors.

@kikimoraWTF Its about a family in the 1950's. It's a pretty simple concept. There is a lot more to it as there always is in Malick's pictures but whatever you take away from the movie is up to you. Mainly its about a family and the relationship between Brad Pitt and the one son who grows up to be Sean Penn.

Yea im not an expert, but if you listen carefully youll know whats going on. Simply, the mother's view of life is through 'nature', while the father's view is 'grace'. Through out the trailer, both the mother's and father's view contradict each other.

Looks like a good movie.

I saw honored enough to see this at Cannes film festival for the premiere and was so upset. The film is strictly for homosexuals, nobody else will enjoy it. It has images like butterflies, flowers, boys talking in soft heartfelt voices and shit like that. The name says it all. the tree of life has been described in many different cultures. it encompasses both life and death. It kinda seems like a 2012 end of the world movie with the close up of the sun and then the second shot of the planets aligning. won't know for sure until its released but looks like it will be a worthwhile watch :)
