Arguably the strongest Best Actor year in history, to say nothing of the Best Picture category. Cogent cases could be made for Finch, De Niro, Stallone, and Holden. Haven't seen Giannini's performance but how could it not have been great to be put in this group.
@FallingRain123 Don't know about the strongest in history considering Sly's inclusion but Giannini in "Seven Beauties" may have had the strongest performance of them all, imo. DeNiro was good but won for the right part 4 years later...
I'm a great admirer of Finch. I think he should have won for Sunday Bloody Sunday five years earlier rather than for this. He was very good in Network but I thought Holden and De Niro deserved it more.
I don't mean to sound disrespectful here but I seriously doubt that Finch managed to say ALL of that to his wife whilst dying from a heart attack.
A bit of l pokerfacing wouldn't have gone amiss there, Sly, rather unprofessional. Delighted Finch won, Network is one of the greatest films I've ever seen and Finch's performance is right up there even though he doesn't get a lot of screen time.
To say Peter Finch only won because he was dead is an insult to his memory and talent. He was a supreme actor, he owned the British Academy award in the late 50's and early 60's, winning several times, and should already have won the Oscar in 1971 for Sunday, Bloody Sunday.
Sly was so getting ready to stand up. He pushed his hair to the side, fixed his color and when she said Peter Finch, his eyes almost popped out! HILARIOUS!
Finch, De Niro or Giannini deserved to win equally. Finch won because he died plus his performance was superb, but I think DeNiro gave the best performance of the five.
If anyone has seen Network, particularly the scene when Peter Finch comes in from the rain to do his broadcast, you will know why he won this award. His acting is utterly superb. Enough said.
@iwasblueonce doesn't change the fact he won because he died. it was a sympathy win. i'm happy with it, but De Niro or even Stallone deserved it more than him imo.

Paddy Chayefsky--A great "Bolshevik-" your Hollywood is replete with Communists, degenerates, pedaphiles and common criminals--who want to act as though they really "Care" about humanity; when the truth of the matter is, they advance their subversive cause of destroying a great nation-

Deniro was married to a black woman too, so what?? Interesting that a white man can pull such a black beauty. Survival is a mutha. Oh well!! Cool vid.
1:09 Stalones face, priceless. And look at him previous to the announcement like he really expected to win. "Yo Adrian I dont get it, I thought I was thier hero." "Yes but you cant act yet, darling. Give it some time."
I have to disagree with those who think this was a charity award. Mr. Finch's performance in "Network" was masterful and he absolutely deserved the honor. I'm old enough to remember when this took place and nearly everyone said he was a shoo-in when the film opened, before he passed away.
It's sad the guy died but Award shows need to stop giving charity awards. Heath Ledger deserved his but Finch over De Niro? Even Stallone deserved it more...
sorry, but de niro should've won i think it's fairly obvious. i love network, and i loved peter finch's performance but de niro shouldve won this no question
1:10 LOL. Sly is totally expecting to win with a smile on his face, and when Liv announces, "Peter Finch", his smile disappears and he thinks, "What the F! He's DEAD!"
Peter Finch gave truly an amazing performance in "Network"... And more than anything it was a performance of a lifetime. His work is long lived on and for good reason in todays world. God Speed.
Sly looks devastated that he didnt win :p The award should have went to Robert De Niro because his performance in Taxi Driver is unlike anything i have seen before, classic. If not De Niro i think Sly Stallone shoulda got it then cuz his potrayal of Rocky is nothing short of legendary
It was a total class act by Paddy Chayefsky to call Peter Finch's widow, Eletha, to come up and get that award. Except for the "Hollywood Establishment", not many people knew that Mr. Finch was married to a black woman. In attempting to have Mr. Chayefsky accept that award, the intention was to keep an "issue" covered up. Gladly, Mr Chayefsky rose above the ignorance.
@derf66 I read something different. The producer that year was William Fredkin who apparently didn't want any 'weeping widows' on the show, so he asked Paddy Chayefsky to accept. Allegedly he wasn't happy afterwards
Liv Ullmann is truly a class act. Oh, and Peter Finch totally deserved this, btw. Stallone? PFFT! That's all I have to say for that particular "actor."
@renfieldvonklauss You have to understand the times. This is a nationally broadcasted show. To have a major white film star to be shown to be married to a black woman just would NOT do. Ratings you know. Protests. There were a number of interracial marriages in Hollywood kept under wraps. That's why what Paddy Chayesfsky did was very brave. Showed a lot of class! Different times, my friend. I was watching that night and I knew what it meant for her to be up there.
I think it's safe to assume that had Peter Finch been living, he would've lost to his co-star, William Holden. Holden even said that after the ceremony, so he was probably unhappy about the loss.
I know that nowadays Stallone is a joke, but back then he was a brilliant screenwriter and actor and i think that he deserved the award. Rocky is just a masterpiece, nothing less.
I know that nowadays Stallone is a joke, but back then he was a brilliant screenwriter and actor and i think that he deserved the award. Rocky is just a masterpiece, nothing less.

William Holden gives a class lesson to everybody here, just as soon as Peter Finch's name is announced: he closes his eyes, starts applauding and says "Oh, yeah!"...Hollywood Golden Age was ending and mr. Holden was surely one of its best representants, modesty and elegance were all his.
@143AC But at the time, it would have been shocking to have a major white star to be known to have wed a black woman. In fact, he married her twice, in 2 separate ceremonies. I was watching that night, and my respect for Mr. Chayefsky soared. It was a brave thing to do back then.
tough to say anything bad about Peter Finch winning. He was terrific, but I actually think Holden was better in the same film. But history has shown that the sentimental vote got the better of them this year. De Niro as Travis may very well be the single most memorable performance of the 1970s. Should've won for certain
Just visited Hollywood and one of my stops was at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery where Finch is entombed. I paid my respects to the man who delivered one of the best lines in movie history ("I'm as mad as Hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"). I loved De Niro's and Holden's performances, but I am ok with Finch winning.
Emotional stuff and to be fair on Stallone he looked slightly disorientated as Finch's name was read out as winner which was completely understandable. It was not a face of 'I haven't won'.
From what I understand, Peter Finch died AFTER the voting was completed. Both Finch and Holden played lead characters in "Network": they were the linchpins. Stallone looked like he couldn't believe he lost.
@ooks Yep, Giannini was brilliant, nice to see people haven't forgotten about "Pasqualino Settebellezze". Anyway, as the performance was in Italian, and despite Sofia Loren's prior triumph, it was clear he didn't stand a chance. But he would have been a terrific winner. Same for Marcello Mastroianni the following year, his performance in "Una Giornata Particolare" was way above the other four candidates in my opinion.
"I'M MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!" That line itself speaks volumes over any message De Niro or Stallone was trying to portray in their movies. It transcends anything beyond those other (albeit also amazing) movies at that time (I say that because this was before Godfather).
I've always gotten the impression that Sylvester Stallone is a jerk, and after watching his reaction after losing indicates that he's a bigger jerk. Absolutely disgraceful reaction. SHOW SOME RESPECT FOR THE DEAD SYLVESTER!
I would have made it a tie between William Holden and Peter Finch for Network.
De Niro was also tremendous, but he was even better in Raging Bull, which he deservedly won the Oscar for. He should have also won an Oscar for The Deer Hunter.
Stallone was a joke. Rocky was a joke. IT WAS A B-MOVIE!
De Niro gave the defining performance of the 70s in "Taxidriver"..as usual with the Oscars , sentimental favourite wins again ( with all due respect to Finch who did good work throughout his career)
@deathfromabove77 Network was a comedy satire, that requires the actors to be over the top for style purposes, Peter Finch and Faye Dunaway performances were the best performances thus won Academy Awards in my opinion.
De Niro gave the defining performance of the 70s in "Taxidriver"..as usual with the Oscars , sentimental favourite wins again ( with all due respect to Finch who did good work throughout his career) ..And for those who misguidedly think Finch's performance was "just as good" need to watch those performances back to back..Finch was theatrical, over the top..De Niro's was real, authentic, powerful, new , unique...BETTER
I was watching that night. Hollywood knew Finch's wife was black, but then you could and did keep interracial marriages secret. Peter Finch was a great actor; one of my favorite.
I am surprised he was nominated for Best Actor, rather than Supporting Actor. In terms of screen-time, it was a supporting role, and William Holden was certainly the lead actor. Is nominating two Best Actors for the same film allowed nowadays?
Regardless, Finch was great in this movie. Was glad to see this clip. I've seen neither Finch's wife, nor Paddy Chayefsky on film before.
All amazing at their parts. I do not believe that Finch got the award because he had died, but because he deserved it. His scene, I remember, as a kid, screaming "I am mad as hell and am not going to take it anymore" resonates still for me. His wife's very moving speech touched me so much.
Mrs.Finch is a beautiful lady..I'm glad that Mr.Chayefsky gave the Oscar to his widow.I'm just sorry that her husband never lived long enough to get his award for his work in "Network".
I recall reading a behind the scenes book on the Academy Awards which stated that Stallone pretty much acted brattish after the ceremony when none of his own nominations (actor, screenplay) were converted into wins.
Having created the year's no 1 top grossing movie and major Oscar winner on some level I can understand his dissapointment but his attitude in the above clip is purely one of self-entitlement.
Poor Liv Ullman, when se present it to Brando in 1972, he wasn´t there... to Finch in 1976.. he wasn´t there..... they never invited her to present again......
Producer William Friedkin did not want any emotional speech and later complained to both Paddy Chayefsky and Mrs. Finch. By the way, Mrs. Finch's speech was written by Chayefsky himself and they had rehearsed it prior to the ceremony. As for the award, I'm torn between Finch and Holden; De Niro and Gianinni were also brilliant. Stallone was, and has always been, a joke.
@zim83 Stallone wasn't a joke when he portrayed Rocky Balboa in the first opus, he created this character and played it with his guts ... I don't say he deserved to win, but it was an Oscar Nomination worthy performance ...
I believe that is the 'official' word, but the 'unofficial' word and the truth I believe, is because Mrs. Finch was black. This was decades ago and although Hollywood knew, most movie goers did not. I, along with my family, am a Peter Finch fan. I was watching that night and had no idea that Mrs Finch was black. Times certainly have changed. There were a number of interracial marriages in Hollywood, but most fans did not know. For example, the lovely Inger Stevens was married to a black man.
I think he deserved it. I was torn between De Niro and Finch, but Finch dying probably clinched it for him. And I don't think Stallone was unhappy at his loss, I doubt he was expecting to win (he hardly swept the award season).
stallone should have won that

I would have made it a tie between William Holden and Peter Finch for Network.
De Niro was also tremendous, but he was even better in Raging Bull, which he deservedly won the Oscar for. He should have also won an Oscar for The Deer Hunter.
Stallone was a joke. Rocky was a joke. IT WAS A B-MOVIE!

De Niro gave the defining performance of the 70s in "Taxidriver"..as usual with the Oscars , sentimental favourite wins again ( with all due respect to Finch who did good work throughout his career)
deathfromabove77 1 year ago

They must have known Finch would win the award because they have presenting the award Liv Ullmann, with whom he starred in "Lost Horizon."

I was watching that night. Hollywood knew Finch's wife was black, but then you could and did keep interracial marriages secret. Peter Finch was a great actor; one of my favorite.

William Holden: "Oh God, really?"
And Stallone looked terribly confused.
levanyzzuf 2 years ago
@levanyzzuf That does seem to be what Holden mouthed.
He also allegedly said later,
"If the bastard didn't die, I'd have won".
That was typical Holden, it's why we loved him.

Giannini deserved it.
Seven Beauties is one of the most underrated films in history, it predated Spielberg's schindler's list and in my opinion was far superior.
Finch did not deserve this, dead people shouldn't get awards.

Having created the year's no 1 top grossing movie and major Oscar winner on some level I can understand his dissapointment but his attitude in the above clip is purely one of self-entitlement.

holden, finch, and de niro all did wonderful jobs. that was a good year for movies and acting.

Poor Liv Ullman, when se present it to Brando in 1972, he wasn´t there... to Finch in 1976.. he wasn´t there..... they never invited her to present again......

ha ha that's true. Well atleast she looks beautiful in an ethereal way. And what a brilliant actress.

LOL, well spotted. Ullmann is an outstanding actress, though.

Stallone was, and has always been, a joke.
zim83 2 years ago 7
@zim83 Stallone wasn't a joke when he portrayed Rocky Balboa in the first opus, he created this character and played it with his guts ... I don't say he deserved to win, but it was an Oscar Nomination worthy performance ...

@ElMaruecan82 I agree. The first Rockt was a wonderful film.

I always thought it was very brave of Paddy Chayesky to defy the powers that be and bring Mrs Finch onstage. BTW...I love his name!

I think he deserved it. I was torn between De Niro and Finch, but Finch dying probably clinched it for him. And I don't think Stallone was unhappy at his loss, I doubt he was expecting to win (he hardly swept the award season).
