@YUZO2kxx on pure adrenaline he got up after that hellish fight his body gave him one last burst of energy before being taken to a hospital to treat his facial fracture and internall bleeding that cause him to urinate blood. @tickyul Did your Filipino ex tell you that you have a small dick? I know it must hurt coming from an Asian woman and all, but dammit man! You MUST get over it at some point...
He gets no credit for this commentary for the simple fact that he didnt even know who Chavez was fighting. that taylor guy lost his whole pride that day! No wonder f.mayweather dosent want to fight paquiao,he figure it might happend to him too after he get the b-jesus beat out of him
Just watched an interview with Meldrick Taylor BEFORE the Chavez fight. I am here to tell you HE WAS DONE (AS FAR AS BEING DAMAGED) BEFORE the Chavez fight. I mean, he was mumbling and hard to understand, glassy eyed, stiff and robotic like he was having a hard time coming up with reponses to the interviewer. Meldrick was the fastest puncher I have EVER seen and I have been watching boxing since I was a little kid. Maybe which boxers get dementia depends a lot on genetics. Really sad story.
Carolla is an Dick! Talor isn't "punch drunk" he's mind is sharp however his speech is very slurred and garbled its true however punch drunk he is most certainly not.
@cruiserweight190 No, sorry...........MT has extensive damage to his CNS. His stiff, wooden movements suggest a syndrome much like Ali's....possibly Parkinsons Pugilistica.

Thank Richard because he stoped the fight. Taylor ended up stupid after this fight, it is documented that he went to the hospital and spent two weeks with a head fracture. He had the risk of getting killed by Chavez. The referee saw that, and as a pro, he was obligated to stop the fight.
@halquisada : No... he was mistaken it wasn´t Whitaker it was Taylor, but i agree with him in one thing, Steele was right when he stopped the fight, can u imagine going like the old days to 15 rounds? Taylor would have died right there, Chavez really demolished him, he ran directly to ER, well that is what happens when u fight some kind of a freak, an assassin, that´s what Chavez was in the ring, in his prime he was unstoppable, in his fights against the Sweet Pea, Randall or De La Hoya he was on decline clearly
lol @ this moron Corolla throwing his 2 cents in when he doesn't even remember the boxer or the circumstances of the KO. Taylor beat the count and should have won the fight.
The red light IS a time keeping device in case you didnt realize.
The point Adam was making is that it would be more unfair for the ref to intentionally allow the clock to run down in order to secure a decision for Taylor when Chavez had taylor hurt to the extent that he was unable to respond to the ref within the round. In other words, a KO.
Chavez deserves credit for his show of heart and perseverence in scoring a spectular come from behind KO.
Taylor was fighting on pure fumes and you can see what the effecta of the fight had on him. After that he could barely speak and was noticably slower. It's really sad seeing the brain damage it occured..very sad
also one thing that people need to think about is the rematch. taylor was a hell of a fighter but if he was so good why didnt he beat him in the rematch?
Clearly Taylor wasn't the same after this fight. Mentally or physically. This fight took something out of Chavez too. As it has been said many times, when these guys fight like this, they are never the same.
One note, there was a comment about Meldrick Taylor not doing so well during an HBO broadcast. The focus was clearly on Taylor. Of course Larry Merchant's sorry ass had to add the comment, "Well I understand that Chavez is doing all that great either." Larry Merchant = POS!
Second, Lou Duva should have never jumped onto the ring apron during Richard Steele's counting of the knockdown. Not only did he distract Taylor, he also distracted Steele who never saw Chavez leaving the neutral corner. Had Duva stayed put, Steele would have stopped the count and returned Chavez to the neutral corner as the clock ran out of time for the 12th.
Under these circumstances, you can't blame Steele. He made the right call.
The person most responsible for Taylor losing this fight is Lou Duva.
First, he instructs Taylor to win the final round at all costs because the fight is too close to call. Taylor did as he was told and placed himself in the line of fire.
Taylor may have won rounds 1-10, but his punches hardly did anything to JC (besides bobbling his head in the 10th). Its amazing how JC did not go down right there. But you could see it Taylors face, that he was worn out and his mouth was open and he was struggling to breath. In the 12th round, there was about + or - 5 times when he looked like he was about fall over. He should have responded when Steele looked at him instead of looking into space.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Also the only people to be blamed for that tragic event is Taylors corner. They told him he needed the last round and to get after him. In reality Taylor could have ran away the whole round and he was gonna take the fight.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
We all saw the fight, chavez almost killed him, one more punch on those 2 seconds, Taylor would have been dead. Chavez has to be the best latino fighter ever, probably the world too
He wouldnt have been dead. Taylor in a boxing sense destroyed Chavez in a physical sense Chavez gave Taylor brain injury. Taylor should have been given the two seconds. He won that fight and it was his biggest accomplishment. All he has to show for it now is being slow. Taylor should have been awarded that win. Boxing should reward Taylor now too, he is one of the greatest boxers to ever live.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
its to easy to know who won this fight just need to know that Taylor was at the hospital that night and Chavez was just fine!...Taylor hit him 1000 times with a Tennis ball and Chavez hit him 100 times with a Baseball pretty clear ahh=?
Taylor was failed by his corner. He had a commanding lead, but for some reason his corner told him 0to press when thee was no need to. Chavez was a brawler at heart with a solid chin that could take ALOT of punishment. It did not make sense to press him. It's like his corner forgot what got them to the twelth round. It was the complete opposite the Louis/Conn bout. Conns corner said "STAY AWAY", but he pressed and got knocked out. Both fights still piss me off.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Taylor pulled himself up with the ropes then crumbled in the corner. He never attempted to stand on his own 2 feet and stared blankley. he also failed to respond to steele twice. Was steele supposed to raise his glove & intentionally allow the clock to run down in order to secure a victory? you wouldnt expect an nba ref to grab the ball and allow the clock to run down. It's no different than a nba player scoring a last sec three to win the game. a ko is a ko whether it comes in the 1st or 12th.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@kingshane."you don't stop it if he is up on his feet"
WRONG, fights are stopped all the time when a fighter is seriously hurt even if he manages to get to his feet, but Taylor never actually stood on his own or responded to the ref. He slumped in the corner with his arms hanging over the ropes & was seriously hurt. he gave no inidication vocally or physically that he could continue. He was clearly beaten to the point that he could not continue & there was still time left on the clock- a TKO
IT has always the same lame excuse don king and steel are not friends that has been proven, and there wasnt a buy out. the other lame excuse has been that he deserved it?? Julio deserved it too. Just cus taylor was wining the whole fight, well lets take away the giants super bowl ring and give it to the patriots cuz they went on undefeated the entire season and were beating the giants till the giants won in the last seconds should we do that?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I don't believe king and Steel did anything together but boxing isn't football, why is there lights on the corner of the ring, why is there the ten second sound, telling everyone ten seconds is left in the round, Steel I believe, made a big mistake because he was confused, and just acted on instinct, not knowing what to do, everyone should know, Meldrick won that fight, Julio knew, Taylor went up to Welter, won the title, and Chavez would not fight him until after he was beat twice brain damaged
Damn Carolla is a MORON. Get your facts straight dumbass. Taylor won. Steele should have known the time and used his common sense. Taylor was able to continue. Steele, Duva and King fucked this poor kid.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
U clearly were going for taylor... taylor wasnt even looking at him anymore. When a ref is talking to u and asking u questions. Its best if u look at him atleast cause he is liable to think ur out of it not even paying attention to him not looking at him
am not a racist but am going to have to disagree with canibusnj on one thing there was this one man and his name was salvador sanchez and i honestley belive that he was just as good as robinson 4 sure!!
You know nothing about boxing, or the fight that took place on March 17, 1990. If you want to know what really happened that night you should have Meldrick Taylor on your show instead of trying even to understand the sport of boxing which you don't obviously. I am sure the fans want to hear from him. If you wish to contact the two time world champ, and youngest Olympic gold medalist leave me a message.
enofoymra you do your research mate, they only had 2 fight you crazy bastard, taylor should of won the first one and chavez knocked him clean out on the second yeh spaz!
A KO is a KO regardless if it occurs at the end of the first round or the end of the 12th.
Taylor never stood on his own two feet. He pulled himself up using the ropes then slumped in the corner with his arms draped over the ropes and a glazed over expression in his eyes and a gaping mouth. He was obviously done, there was time on the clock = KO.
WHO TOOK the rematch four and a half years after the first fight? the same person who got the biggest GIFT in his career the first fight! JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ!!!!!!!!LOLOLOLOL
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah, his gift was to knock down taylor, send him to the hospital with a swollen face, fractured face, damaged internal organs, urinating blood, leaving him " punch drunk", and yes, knocking him down on the rematch as well!!!!!! duh.
What are you talking about, what third? Don't feel bad saying anything my friend, because it really doesn't matter. Meldrick is the happiest he has ever been in his whole life, no he's not retarded, no he's not broke, and no he's not in a homeless shelter. I know that is what most of the Chavez fans hoped for but I'm sorry to break the news that it is not true.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
do your research and you will know there was a third, and NO i dont think jcc fans hope to see mt retarded or homeless or any of the cruel things you mentioned but yes he did destroy him AND AS FAR AS MT BEING HAPPY HEY THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT.!!!!!and of course brother PEACE right back at you from HOUSTON!!!!!!!!!!!TEXZ........................
There was NO third fight between these two boxers. Also, Chavez claimed that Taylor never hurt him but you could clearly see that Chavez wasn't the same fighter after this fight either.
The purpose in stopping a fight during a round is to prevent any of the fighters from gettin hurt. This was the last round Mr.Carolla and there was not going to be another round. Also, Chavez was not on the neutrel corner therfore the count must not start. Also Meldrick nodded his head twice saying he was ok.. so why stop the fight? A standing eight count if needed was enough.Steele knew what was going on...Righ mr Don King?
lol... he was holding up on the ropes... he wasnt looking at the ref. so the fight had to be stop... taylor just fast never really hurt chavez.. thats why in the second fight he got knocked out
my respect to both of them. That was a great fight for a long time. They're great boxers. Also, I think that Steel was right to stop the fight. Taylor was holding the ropes when steeel stopped the fight. A fighter has to stand up by himsef in order to continue. Taylor barely stood up, holding the ropes. that why he was declared knocked down. In this case the best is the winner. The end.
Lot of Adam Carolla 'fans' here (I'm not). Though he had the major details of the fight wrong (fighter, didn't know the ref, time on the clock, etc.), even so, of course it is a very legitimate & difficult question -- but more complex than he is representing it. Taylor's corner said he DID make a glance and an acknowledgement in response to Richard Steele. Camera angle (I believe) is from behind. There's a subjective element here. Hard to fault, but not sure it was the right decision either.
At 2:00 That's not Meldrick, that's Ivan Robinson who coincidently is from the same neighborhood in philly(nicetown)as Meldrick. They even went to the same high school.(Simon Gratz)
yea i totally agree with the stoppage also! there was 3 seconds left and that is enough time for a professional boxer, especially julio, to land one or two more punches! the ref literally saved his life, one more punch and it could have been fatal or he could of ended up worse! taylors corner fucked up, when they told him at the start of the 12th that the fight was close and he needed to fight, but now his corner denies saying that, cause they knew it was their fault! its kinda of sad!
I fully agree with Corolla on this. I have seen this fight many times, and every time, I felt that Steele had made the right decision. Taylor was winning the fight by a country mile, yet he was taking a serious beating throughout and finally it had to be stopped. Good stoppage, good to see someone else who agrees with the stoppage.
Refs making no-calls late in games. It started with a questionable pass interference no-call at the end of a game. He liked the idea of letting them play, but then offered this as a case where calling it by the book is appropriate.
I loved The man show, The Adam Carolla Project and Too Late with Adam Carolla. Back then I had no idea he was a boxing trainer. I was shocked when he said he was. I also saw him in The Contender as well. The Ace man rules!!! The greatest fight of the ninties JCC vs. MT!!! Upload more Adam Carolla Jaguar! You're the best!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm a big fan Carolla as well. You can download podcasts of his show online and even the old loveline shows are available on a different site.
its not that there was only 2 seconds left and he would have won anyway, its that he gets up at the count of FOUR. he was ready to keep going

Also the only people to be blamed for that tragic event is Taylors corner. They told him he needed the last round and to get after him. In reality Taylor could have ran away the whole round and he was gonna take the fight.

We all saw the fight, chavez almost killed him, one more punch on those 2 seconds, Taylor would have been dead. Chavez has to be the best latino fighter ever, probably the world too
uponchristian 2 years ago
He wouldnt have been dead. Taylor in a boxing sense destroyed Chavez in a physical sense Chavez gave Taylor brain injury. Taylor should have been given the two seconds. He won that fight and it was his biggest accomplishment. All he has to show for it now is being slow. Taylor should have been awarded that win. Boxing should reward Taylor now too, he is one of the greatest boxers to ever live.

Corner Fail By Lou Duva

Taylor was stunned and he made a big mistake.... he was looking at Lou Duva instead of Richard Steele... So that's his fault, not the refere's fault.
chuydrum1 2 years ago
Taylor was failed by his corner. He had a commanding lead, but for some reason his corner told him 0to press when thee was no need to. Chavez was a brawler at heart with a solid chin that could take ALOT of punishment. It did not make sense to press him. It's like his corner forgot what got them to the twelth round. It was the complete opposite the Louis/Conn bout. Conns corner said "STAY AWAY", but he pressed and got knocked out. Both fights still piss me off.

He was clearly beaten to the point that he could not continue & there was still time left on the clock- a TKO

ill tell you the fact this should have been chavez's first loss but thanks to don king it wasn't!!!!
salsancheznumber1fan 2 years ago
IT has always the same lame excuse don king and steel are not friends that has been proven, and there wasnt a buy out. the other lame excuse has been that he deserved it?? Julio deserved it too. Just cus taylor was wining the whole fight, well lets take away the giants super bowl ring and give it to the patriots cuz they went on undefeated the entire season and were beating the giants till the giants won in the last seconds should we do that?

I don't believe king and Steel did anything together but boxing isn't football, why is there lights on the corner of the ring, why is there the ten second sound, telling everyone ten seconds is left in the round, Steel I believe, made a big mistake because he was confused, and just acted on instinct, not knowing what to do, everyone should know, Meldrick won that fight, Julio knew, Taylor went up to Welter, won the title, and Chavez would not fight him until after he was beat twice brain damaged

You know nothing about boxing, or the fight that took place on March 17, 1990. If you want to know what really happened that night you should have Meldrick Taylor on your show instead of trying even to understand the sport of boxing which you don't obviously. I am sure the fans want to hear from him. If you wish to contact the two time world champ, and youngest Olympic gold medalist leave me a message.

bulldog359 2 years ago
A KO is a KO regardless if it occurs at the end of the first round or the end of the 12th.
Taylor never stood on his own two feet. He pulled himself up using the ropes then slumped in the corner with his arms draped over the ropes and a glazed over expression in his eyes and a gaping mouth. He was obviously done, there was time on the clock = KO.

A standing eight count if needed was enough.Steele knew what was going on...Righ mr Don King?

ciderath00 2 years ago
lol... he was holding up on the ropes... he wasnt looking at the ref. so the fight had to be stop... taylor just fast never really hurt chavez.. thats why in the second fight he got knocked out
chucholuco 2 years ago
my respect to both of them. The end.

Thank you, Jaguar Knight, for removing "Dead on the Throne's" comment. Don't know what his problem was. Maybe he's dead on the throne.
pnutbutrncrackers 3 years ago
Lot of Adam Carolla 'fans' here (I'm not). Though he had the major details of the fight wrong (fighter, didn't know the ref, time on the clock, etc.), even so, of course it is a very legitimate & difficult question -- but more complex than he is representing it. Taylor's corner said he DID make a glance and an acknowledgement in response to Richard Steele. Camera angle (I believe) is from behind. There's a subjective element here. Hard to fault, but not sure it was the right decision either.

finally someone made sence, yeap, I agree. The refere is there to proted the fighter to make sure the fight is legal. not to feel bad for someone.

exactly, giving him the extra 3 seconds is more cheating than callin it with 3 seconds left, its not breaking rules compared to the other one

budfr 3 years ago
yea i totally agree with the stoppage also! there was 3 seconds left and that is enough time for a professional boxer, especially julio, to land one or two more punches! the ref literally saved his life, one more punch and it could have been fatal or he could of ended up worse! taylors corner fucked up, when they told him at the start of the 12th that the fight was close and he needed to fight, but now his corner denies saying that, cause they knew it was their fault! its kinda of sad!
01manarmy87 3 years ago 8
I fully agree with Corolla on this. I have seen this fight many times, and every time, I felt that Steele had made the right decision. Taylor was winning the fight by a country mile, yet he was taking a serious beating throughout and finally it had to be stopped. Good stoppage, good to see someone else who agrees with the stoppage.

Refs making no-calls late in games. It started with a questionable pass interference no-call at the end of a game. He liked the idea of letting them play, but then offered this as a case where calling it by the book is appropriate.
