The Green Album and Maladroit are genius. Matt did add a nice quirky touch to =W= but he wasn't as instrumental in the sound as he gets credit for. Rivers got really weird after the reception Pinkerton received after it's release and that had more to do with the music than Matt's departure.

Look, even if Matt rejoined the band they'll still sound the exact same. Rivers writes all the songs and gives minor input to the rest of the band. They'll still be playing pop songs without any feel even if Matt were to come back. I'm actually glad he left to play with the Rentals for the fact that he now plays what he likes to hear (essentially that old pinkerton sound).

@greenplastikme That is just a ridiculous thing to say. Listen to Rivers home recordings which are completely him. Rivers was always the lead songwriter and after Pinkerton failed, he tried different songwriting experiments. He used formulas from Oasis, Green day, and Nirvana to try and make a hit song. Matt sharp did not write songs for Weezer. Post-pinkerton Weezer just picks bad songs for the albums...they have released good songs that were demoted to bonus tracks, or never released.

It hasn't been said. Matt said he left the band, Rivers said he fired him. I'm guessing Matt just wasn't into the music. His solo work is very different. Since Matt wasn't into it, he probably wasn't very serious about Weezer. Rivers needed a more dedicated member. Matt filed a lawsuit because he wasn't getting any royalties for the first two albums. Rivers and Matt settled it out of court eventually. But obviously things won't be the same after all that. They made amends, and thats it.

I have a story if anyone wants to read.. heres my story, I have missed out on seeing Weezer 3 times now (I have never seen them live). 1st time was during the Green Album at Virgin records (RIP) in NYC. I was 1 minute late to get a wristband and they did not have anymore. 2nd time I called up a radio station to win tickets and I was caller 7 and I needed to be 9. 3rd time I was actually outside the venue without a ticket and there was an assload of people.

The band took a break and they all split up for a little bit to work on their own little project(band). Pat made "The Special Goodness", Brian made "The Space Twins", Rivers went to Harvard and made a solo album, and Matt made "The rentals". When the band decided to get back together, Matt decided not to rejoin and instead, carry on with his own band. Then a couple years later, Matt sued Weezer because he wanted money for the albums that he helped them create (Blue Album, Pinkerton).

"matt and rivers the way it should be" spoken from a true fan. Matt is what gave weezer their fuzzy heavy sound they had on Blue and Pinkerton, after those albums that sound slowly faded away. Mikey and scott are both good, but Matt is one of the foundations of weezer, since he's been gone weezer hasn't been the same, and probably never will be. Thank god for Matt Sharp.

I agree with the "matt and rivers the way it should be" sentiment, but Matt isn't the one who gave weezer their heavier, fuzzy sound. It was Pat. Pat would make instrumental demos (guitar and drums) and Rivers would write melodies and lyrics for them. For example, My Name Is Jonas was a song that came together that way.

The Rentals self titled has the "fuzzy", and i think better "please let that be you". Also on Return of the RENTALS. because it is from the first album. which IS different and that is the way M. Sharpe wanted to go , should have merged or stayed in both bands. but BLUE and PINK are my faves. pinkerton armed transport sued WEEZER for using thier name, even though it is public domain and has NOTHING to do with armored trucks.

They do get along, Rivers ego is in the past and Matt was even at Rivers Wedding so Im pretty sure they dont hate each other.

Also they recorded songs before they played this show in Riverside but given the fact that Matt reformed the rentals I doubt the songs will ever see the light of day.
