A very funny woman, loved her in nearest dearest, got the complete dvd series this Christmas , thinking about getting not on your nellie , any one know if it's as good as nearest and dearest?
@atlast1948 Quite a few of her relatives emigrated to US and Canada. I would have loved to have met Hylda
She was not just a comedienne as she explains in the interview.
Her father had serious accident in the theatre, hardly worked after this. Hylda was the mainstay of the family but eventually married - I don't think these marriages lasted.
Hylda was born in Farnworth but her father Harold Baker was born in Rochdale.
I loved Hilda! My old mum was a carbon copy of her always gettting her worms mixed up and that. LOL. She was real gem and such a great actress. Bless you my darling and thanks for the laughs and the memories. RIP XXXX
"Eamon Andrews said 'This is your life' and I was almost prostitute on the floor!" LOL. what a great trooper. Love the way she presents the award to the guy with the bird at the start too.
Shes fantastic, funny as. Ive got quite a few nearest and dearests on dvd...it was pretty much the first working class comedy at Granada and reflected real working class characters...she was great. Ive heard she was a bugger to work with but to be honest most great comdians are perfectionists...Love her to bits.
This is what is so great about You Tube. Until now I'd never heard of Hylda Baker (and I love Amer. Vaudville And Eng. Music Hall). She really takes charge when in front of an audience. Is there any film of the young Hylda Baker?
Hylda was in Saturday night and Sunday morning, She played an abortionist in something else (not sure if that was the film Poor Cow) and she played the undertaker's wife opposite Leonard Rossiter in the musical "Oliver" which also starred Ron Moody as Fagin.
Not to mention all the TV things.
She was a good looking woman in her earlier years - weren't we all.
Yes and that was a CRACKER of a Film in its' time, I remember watching it all those years ago @atlast1948.
Funnily enough I was watching some clips from it on You Tube the other day and it hasn't lost its' grit and 60s feel to it. Do you remember Hylda with Cynthia who was obviously a man and she used to say to "her" tell them about it Cynthia, do you remember Cynthia and then she would talk about it all herself!!
hi all i miss her so much what a lovely comic genius in her scripts she got her words mixed up my late mother used to get her words mixed up but by by mistake ho come on xmzyb she was a lancashire girl bless all fans paul uk
An absolute megastar and very, very sadly neglected, as she became increasingly efferfluvious as dementia took its toll. Unique, bright, vivacious, perfect comic timing, and I've no doubt, a truly lovely and warm human being.
What a true star she was! It's really sad that only a handful of people attended her funeral. I can't understand it... The same thing happened at Wilfrid Brambell's funeral. And yet, now, how much we give to have even a 5 minute chat with them! Rest in peace, Hylda. Dawn xxx
tez1111; Also the same with Michael Robbins (Stan from" On The Buses"). I recall bumping into him in Wimbledon around 1986 and he looked like a tramp. So sad! The great Terry Thomas also ended similarly to Hylda. Fantastic comedians who'll never be replaced.
I`m not sure what you are inferring when you say only a handful were there? I believe this is report from the gutter press? More than a dozen of her family from the North of England were there together with those who had shared her life in her latter years - her friends and staff from the home together with some old friends , her agent and her accountant. So basically everyone who needed to be there was there.
Well he was homosexual, had boyfriends but died of aids related sysmptons I believe, he was a great friend of the famous playwright Alan Bennett. But actually Russell harty is a legend in england at least.
hi hilda baker was a star . anyone thought of turning her life story into a tv drama . this would be brilliant, storys you here about hilda , ie not getting on with her brother ellie and her wild partys in blackpool. this would make a cracking drama. think patrica roulidge would play the part .
Its very sad that such a superb lady had to die in such cercumstaces,if any of you know such stars, give em a call and a smile and offer a coffee or what you want, do that for anyone who looks as if they need a smile!
I think Daydream who put this on youtube would be up for it too, he's got more information than me. I live near Twickenham cemetary where shes buried in a mass grave for old music hall acts who had fallen on bad times. She died lonely and penniless, it would be fab if we could bring her to life again and give her a good rememberance party or something. Apparently Paul O Grady is into reviving her memory.
Not sure what you mean by she died lonely? She did not want to move `North` to be with her family but they visited her regulary in the home and hospital and indeed her niece Ann was with her when she died.
As she suffered Alzheimer`s in her latter years visits to the home from outsiders would have been confusing so her friends were those in the home and her visiting family together with the staff at The
Entertainment Artists Benevolent Home in Twickenham and later Horton Hospital, Epsom. I suggest you dont take your facts from the gutter press.

What happened to Hylda Baker? I know she died but when? and How?
Feisty1967 1 year ago
@Feisty1967 Bronchial pneumonia she also suffered form alzheimer's, she died in 1986 london.
daydream1900 1 year ago
Hylda had sad personal life. She suffered ectoptic pregnancy and numerous miscarriages - in later life she gave her love to her pet monkeys.
Try get hold of the book written by Jean Ferguson (actress in Last of the Summer Wine.
My great aunt told me Hylda was my cousin but she was actually second cousin of my second cousin who coincidentally died 2 weeks ago.
Hylda's Aunt Florence married man called Dawber, this man's sister Jane married Henry Bullough who was my second cousin's Gdad.

Hylda Baker reminds me of a TV sitcom character called Ethel, who was Mildred Roper's sister in George & Mildred.

I admired her so much and still do but she was a total C--T off stage.
sadly she suffered from dementia in the end.
But for all her faults (especially her pet monkey) she was a legend. Ther will never be another. (she knows you know)

Hylda knew a lot gay people, in fact some of her best friends were homosapians, so stop squabbling you big girls blouse and get gone, get pickling!

Kindly keep your ignorant homophobic comments to yourself. You want to kill somebody who's already dead? Do us a favour and kill yourself instead.

Terry Thomas had Parkinsons disease for some 18 years.Diagnosed 1971.Died 1990
Hylda suffered from Altzheimers

to Overdale Crematorium, Bolton where they were scattered with those of her father , mother , sisters and brothers.
