Well the volume an item takes up is reduced in most cases (Unless it's a solid ingot of course.) So it's right in a way.

Also yes you can reduce something's mass. Think of popping a balloon. The air is technically part of the mass, but in essence you have reduced an object's effective mass and the volume it takes up.
