I think you can't memorize all the rules. I even think there is no rules. Well, if you would question to a native why he says "don't give up on your dreams" and not "don't give up of your dreams" he would probably say: "We say like that, there is no rule, this expression must be spoken like that". The native has been hearing this expression since he was a child, he probably doesn't know the rule to speak like that, he just speaks like that. I think it's a collocation.

Why do we say "Merry Christmas" and not "happy Christmas" even Happy Christmas also beeing correct? There is no explanation.
