For the record, its a Leyland 0.680 engine fitted with a Freidman & Maier fuel pump. She went like buggery also, but there was a lot of slip on the gearbox owing to having no quick release airvalves in the gearbox. Drivers would just tear through the gears.
I have rode on Volvo re-engined Mk1 Nationals when Merseybus had a trio of them based at St. Helens in the mid 1990s, reg Nos: SKF xxT. They really could shift and they sounded a bit like Mercedes 608 and 609D minibuses! I have never rode on a DAF re-engined National.
This sounds like a TL11 engine to me. The O.680 and the non turbocharged L11 have a harsher 'bark' to them. I recall too that DAF re-engined Nationals sounded similar to O.680 powered National 2s, not surprising really as the DAF unit was based on the Leyland O.680.
I have driven several Mk2 Nationals with the 680 (11.275 liter) engine and a couple with a 11 liter, probably a TL11. This doesn't sound like a gardner or a 680, but more like a coach engine, probably a TL11. Also the engine note of a 680 is quite deep and deeper than this one.
It is in fact a Leyland engine like the ones fitted in a Leyland National MK2. Some Nationals were fitted with Gardner engines but I have none from the inside in my collection....(yet). Very rare unless you could give me an idea where I may be able to get a ride on a Gardner National?
Opps I always have problems telling a TL 11 Engine to a Gardner engine. There use to be leyland and gardner powered olympians and i could hardly tell the differnece between the two too.
It doesn't sound like a 680 for sure and not like Gardner. It could be a TL11. It sounds like a coach. I have come across a Gardner engined National (MYU66X), a couple of TL11 (I think) engined Nationals (A301KJT). Most Mk 2s had the 680 engine (AST151W etc). The rear of the bus has been modified to accommodate the new engine, probably because it wouldn't just slot in. Gardners sound deep and don't howl like this one. Garners were used in Bristol VRs mainly.
Can we put this to bed please?

What a thoroughly lovely machine! I'm so pleased I managed a few rides on this before it went. Chase will be missed!
